Bali is an incredible island with a diverse range of locations to visit.

Many people talk about Bali’s beaches and beachside towns, but some of the best the island has to offer isn’t close to the water at all.

Ubud, situated about an hour north of Seminyak and Kuta, is a real gem and a must-see for anyone visiting Bali.

Ubud… what’s it like?

Ubud is a town situated in the Gianyar area, roughly an hour north of the main areas of Kuta, Seminyak, and Canggu. Ubud is also about one hour from Bali airport.

It’s surrounded by lush jungle, deep ravines, waterfalls, rivers, and famous rice terraces.

In the distance, the active volcano Mount Batur looms, creating a truly mystical atmosphere.

Ubud attracts many more visitors than it used to, it remains a beautiful, tranquil town.

How to get to Ubud

A public transport system in Bali is essentially non-existent, so you will need to travel by car or scooter. I recommend renting your scooter online and getting it dropped off on your arrival. This way, you don't have to search around or haggle for a few extra cents.

A private driver or a GoCar is the best way, and depending on traffic, should take roughly one hour from Seminyak and Umalas and a little longer from the Canggu area.

If you are an experienced driver and feel confident to take on the traffic, you can hire a car, or a bike if that’s your preference. However, I’d recommend you don’t try and tackle this drive if it’s your first time on a scooter.

Bali is certainly not the place to learn, and many tourists have had their holiday ruined by an entirely avoidable bike accident.

Always get travel insurance to protect you from any injury or sickness when traveling to Bali!

How to get around Ubud

One of the best things about Ubud is that it’s quite a walkable town.

If you don’t fancy walking, you can find a private scooter driver, use Gojek, or if you’re an experienced driver, hire a scooter in town.

You could also use a private car or hire a car to explore neighboring villages or for day trips, but when in the town, you’ll spend a lot of time sitting in traffic, that’s just the way it is with Bali roads.
