Ubud is considered the cultural heart of Bali, well known as a flourishing arts and crafts centre with hundreds of shops selling stunning antiques, woodcarvings, textiles, paintings, and jewellery.

Many travellers have Ubud on their itinerary when visiting Bali. In addition to its numerous popular attractions like the Monkey Forest, Ubud Art Market and Tegallalang Rice Terraces, Ubud is also home to a myriad of hidden gems waiting to be uncovered.

The town is also popular for its lush natural mountain scenes. Valleys covered in amazing green rice terraces serve as a background for a multitude of art galleries, stunning temples, and beautiful private villas.

Ubud is a yoga and meditation retreat haven with an abundance of retreat options. Considered an inspirational sanctuary, being present in Ubud alone will nourish your body and soul. You will find total delight in exploring the medicine herb gardens, soaking in the hot springs and holy water meditation.

I love Ubud and after having visited time and time again, it's very close to being on par with my favourite place in Bali, Canggu.

Where To Stay In Ubud: Downtown vs. Outside of Town

Both Ubud Village and its surroundings away from the buzzing heart of town offer a large variety of hotels, guesthouses and villas.

I personally like to stay a little away from the main streets as they get very busy. However, if you plan on walking everywhere, these are the best Ubud area choices.

1. Best areas to stay in Ubud: Stay downtown in the heart of Ubud

There's three parallel running streets that I call the main area of Ubud:

  1. Monkey Forest Road (Jalan Monkey Forest): A central and bustling street, Monkey Forest Road is renowned for its shops, galleries, cafes, and proximity to the popular Monkey Forest Sanctuary.
  2. Jalan Raya Ubud: This is the main road running through Ubud and is often referred to as Jalan Ubud or Ubud Main Road. It is lined with various shops, art galleries, and restaurants.
  3. Hanoman Street (Jalan Hanoman): Parallel to Monkey Forest Road, Jalan Hanoman is another lively street with numerous eateries, spas, and shops.

In-between you will find many Ubud accommodation choices nestled, many of them surrounded by green gardens. It's a great choice to stay along one of the main streets or connecting side streets as you can walk to the main attractions of Ubud easily.

You'll come across quite a few hotels quietly tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the main streets. Choosing the right one can take you to a peaceful retreat, where the natural sounds and the scent of incense in the air make you feel like you're far removed from the main part of town while having all the conveniences of shops and restaurants right at your doorstep.

2. Best areas to stay in Ubud: Stay outside of Ubud Town Center

If you are wondering where to stay in Ubud more secluded and away from the buzzing main area, there are plenty of alternatives to choose from. Ubud offers some of the best places to stay in Bali for a relaxing vacation, and to practice yoga and is an ideal spot for couples, honeymooners, families or groups of friends.

Staying outside of town means, you will get stunning rice paddy views and more intimate villas, many of them offering incredible spas, and providing an atmosphere of complete tranquillity.

You don't even have to go far from town to find them:

  1. Jalan Bisma: Nestled slightly away from the central hub, Jalan Bisma offers a peaceful retreat while still being within reach of Ubud's attractions. This area is known for its tranquil ambiance, charming accommodations, and proximity to nature.
  2. Jalan Kajeng: For those seeking a more secluded and traditional Balinese experience, Jalan Kajeng provides a picturesque setting with art studios, boutiques, and guesthouses, while maintaining accessibility to the town center.
  3. Campuhan Ridge Walk Area: The vicinity around the Campuhan Ridge Walk is a unique blend of natural beauty and cultural richness. Staying in this area allows for breathtaking views of the lush landscapes, and it's an ideal choice for those looking to be close to nature while still enjoying the charm of Ubud.

If you're looking for a romantic and quiet getaway or are on a honeymoon in Bali, then I would highly recommend staying outside of Ubud town centre.
