Even though the town has become a top destination in the last few years, featured in almost every “most beautiful place to see in Europe guide”, Hallstatt is a tiny picturesque village 1.5 hours away from Salzburg.

Given its size, this village of Hallstatt doesn't have any real 5-star hotels. Still, this doesn't mean you cannot find charming guesthouses, B&Bs, and boutique hotels in Hallstatt that offer a more intimate and traditional experience in line with the village's historic and cozy character.

The easiest way to get to this UNESCO World Heritage town is by train. With regular connections from major Austrian cities like Salzburg and Vienna to nearby train stations such as Hallstatt Bahnhof or Obertraun-Dachsteinhöhlen.
I personally took the more adventurous way and got off a train on the other side of Lake Hallstatt in Obertraun. From here, you take a boat across the lake to Hallstatt. Seeing the church tower getting bigger and bigger, the houses built almost inside the lake, and the contrast of the colors of the buildings and the lake is an experience I will never forget. It's so picturesque!
