Known for its surf breaks, green rice paddies and beautiful villas, but food? Yes, Bali’s up and coming hotspot Canggu is foodie haven. No more driving into the craziness of Seminyak to feast on delicious meals.

So where are the best places for breakfast, lunch, brunch and dinner in Canggu, you ask? Here are the nine must-try restaurants and cafes, from cosy shacks to local warungs.

#1 Canteen

Recommended by Rose from Where Goes Rose

Canteen is one of the best brunch and lunch spots in Canggu due to its creative dishes and affordable prices. You’ll never get bored of the menu which includes eggs and avocado dishes, breakfast burritos, fruit pancakes, smoothie bowls and hearty cooked breakfasts.

Appropriately for Canggu, the interior is surf-themed. Giant, colourful surfboards hang from the ceiling and retro surf movie posters adorn the walls. There’s no way you’ll feel anything but chilled out while inside!

Places to eat in Canggu

The brunch deals put Canteen up there as one of the cheapest cafes in Canggu. The pancakes (topped with the most amazing coconut sauce) paired with a fruit bowl and a specialty coffee of your choice will only set you back 60,000 IDR. A total bargain when you consider some of the hipster cafes around the corner charge the same for one side dish.

Unsurprisingly, Canggu is usually busy around the brunch and lunch hours, but don’t let that put you off. The friendly crowd and quirky interior make it the perfect place to chill out, whether you’re fighting a hangover or catching up with friends.

#2 Café Veda

Recommended by Rachael from Explorer Nations.

By now, you've probably already heard or noticed the rave of smoothie bowls. Many people have travelled to Bali for their exotic and authentic eateries, however, another highlight of your trip to Bali especially Canggu is for the beautiful beach and also for the Vegan foods.

Besides the fancy vegan menu items available like tofu cheesecake or vegan sandwiches. No one leaves here without trying their smoothie bowls. The temptations of this colourful, health-boosting and ultra-satisfying bowl of goodness are hard to defy.

Typically, you'll find these smoothie bowls topped with an assortment of super-foods — chia seeds, berries, shaved coconut and granola. Besides, not only is the smoothie bowl healthy to consume, but it is very filling and hearty too. If you think that this tiny bowl is never going to fill you up, you might want to think twice.

It's definitely refreshing to be eaten after being out under the sun, and it also gives a great aesthetic pleasure. Also, don't leave this cafe without trying the health shots, I highly recommended the turmeric ginger shot. You'll definitely feel revitalized after that.

#3 Betelnut Café

Recommended by Jade from Two Tall Travellers.

If you’re craving fantastic fresh and tasty meals, then our favourite spot Betelnut Café won’t disappoint. I have been known to order both lunch and dinner from there in the same day, so that should give you an indication of how good this place is!

Located on the main road, Batu Bolong, it’s easy to find and the local taxi drivers know where it is too.

Choose my favourite, the Bam Bam Bowl, which is a Mexican mix of rice, beans, sweet potato, avocado, corn, tortilla chips and the most incredible chipotle sauce! You can easily make it vegan and swap out the chicken for falafel. Or, share a couple of starters like the Mezze Plate, Chicken Summer Roll or the Buffalo Wings – all amazing value and delicious dishes!

Betelnut’s desserts are also to die for – their rich Oreo cheesecake, fluffy carrot cake and chewy oatmeal cookies will definitely satisfy your sweet cravings!

Another great thing about Betelnut is that the majority of the meals are less than $4! You won’t be disappointed with this great restaurant so when you’re in Canggu, go and check it out!

#4 The Loft

Recommended by Allison from Flights of Fancy.

It’s hard to find a restaurant to please everyone when you have a large group. The Loft Canggu did a great job of catering to our group of eight, which consisted of three meat eaters, four picky kids and a vegan.

The eclectic menu features burgers, wraps, bowls, pasta and a fabulous all-day breakfast. Vegans are well catered for with a Jackfruit burger, a vegan wrap, a vegan bowl and the ever popular avo on toast.

The portion sizes at The Loft Canggu are on the smaller side so it’s perfect for a light lunch, especially when paired with a healthy smoothie. The purple sweet potato fries that came with my chicken burger were a hit and I had to keep swatting the kid’s hands away.

The Loft Canggu is the sister restaurants of Sydney’s Vida and has the same laid-back Bondi vibe.

Service moves at a leisurely pace so don’t bank on getting in an out quickly. If you are short on time, consider grabbing your meal to go from the handy take away window.

#5 Warung Dandelion

Recommended by Julianna from The Discoveries Of

Warung Dandelion is one of my favourite places to eat in Canggu. I love Canggu’s dining scene, the cool cafes, the chance to eat dishes from all around the globe, but Warung Dandelion was hands down my favourite spot for eating traditional Balinese food.

First up, let’s talk about the setting. A cosy warren of romantic lighting, filled with plants, quirky decorations – there are even bunnies in the garden at the front. Cute factor = 10/10. But you’d be wrong to think that Warung Dandelion relies on its looks alone.

This is the place where you can feast on well-known dishes such as Nasi Goreng and Mie Goreng, alongside less well-known ones such as Tumis Pakis (sauteed fiddle fern tips) and come away from it all having had a thoroughly enjoyable meal. Delicious food, personable staff and a beautiful setting, what more could you want?

#6 Sprout Café

Recommended by Kate from Rolling Along With Kids.

Where to eat in Canggu, Bali

Sprout Cafe on Jalan Raya Semat always delivers delicious, wholesome food. Located next to the Garden Kids Club, this is a perfect spot to drop the kids at the kids club for a play and enjoy a coffee in the peace and quiet.

Open from 7am-6pm, the all day breakfast has a huge range including smoothie bowls, eggs and Sprout's very own homemade superfood granola. Lunch keeps everyone happy with salads, baguettes and one of my favourites, the vegetarian grazing board.

Empirical Coffee that Sprout Cafe uses is strong and will keep any coffee lover happy. It is sourced from local Indonesian & South American coffee growers and roasted locally in Bali.

Perhaps the most exciting part of this cafe is the fresh produce used in dishes from their very own organic veggie garden. They also have a focus on composting and recycling which is a fantastic especially in Bali.

Sprout is worth a visit even if you don't have kids and the Wi-Fi is excellent so the perfect spot to catch up on work or friends at home.

I was positive I had food pics of the cafe but can't find them anywhere! So there is a coffee pic and a cafe pic attached. Let me know if this is an issue and if the link could please go to.

#7 Swich

Recommended by Clemens from Travellers Archive.

When I first went to Bali, I was all about eating the most local food I could. However once in a while, you kind of need this piece of home flavour and this can be best satisfied by a fresh sandwich at a place call Swich.

The best thing about this place? It’s a truly local one, opened by an Indonesian guy that mostly uses ingredients from the island. It has also been one of the first places where platic-free alternatives were an issue.

Above all it serves super fresh sandwiches that you can create on your own – from the bread over sauce, veggies to cheeses and/or meat. Grab yourself a freshly squeezed juice and enjoy your sandwich in their garden or take their beautifully handmade paper bags to the beach.

#8 Motion Café

Recommended by David from Jones Around The World

During my two months living in Canggu, Bali, there was a clear favourite for me that I kept going back day after day (as well as getting villa deliveries quite frequently).

Motion Cafe is known as the main fitness cafe in the area and is well known for its protein packed and healthy menu options. They've got amazing waffles and massive egg dishes for breakfast, and a wide selection of delicious dishes for lunch & dinner.

Similar to most cafes in Canggu, there's a fantastic variety of healthy juices, tonics, and smoothies as well, and I loved buying bottles of their Turmeric drinks, Coconut water, and Slimming Green Tea to bring back to my villa.

It's a busy spot in Canggu, and rightfully so!  Definitely check it out during your next visit, and you'll be glad ya did!

#9 Shady Shack

Recommended by Carolin from Breathing Travel

Foodie Guide Canggu Bali

From the moment I heard the name of this place I was in love! Set in a tropically shack, yes there is a lot of shady spots too, The Shady Shack is a bit shabby, a bit chic but most of all it has incredible food.

Vegetarians and vegans will be more than happy with the choices here, as the menu is meat-free!

The Shady Shack has definitely become an institution in Canggu and every meal is just damn good! If you are a sweet tooth like me, make sure you check out their glass cabinet inside with all their vegetarian and vegan-friendly desserts.

Still hungry? Here are a few other favourite cafes of mine in Canggu:

  • Crate Café
  • Peleton Supershop
  • Milk & Madu
  • Born Bright
  • Monsieur Spoon

Happy Eating!
