Porto, affectionately known as the ‘City of Bridges', is a great destination in northern Portugal for anyone looking to experience an authentic European city.

With its seaside cliffs, cobblestone streets, historic buildings, and colourful houses, Porto is a great place for you to stay. The historic city center is so unique and beautiful, it has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1996!

But when it comes to finding out where to stay in Porto, it can be overwhelming. That's why I'm here to help you make the most of your trip and pick out the perfect spot when you visit Porto. Whether you're looking for a luxurious hotel to relax in or an affordable budget option, I've got you covered!

The best areas to stay in Porto

If you're traveling to Porto and looking for a place to stay, there are plenty of different areas to choose from. In this guide, I will help you figure out which one would be best for you!

There are the cultural hubs of Porto, such as Baixa, Ribeira, and Cedofeita, as well as quieter areas like Vila Nova de Gaia. However, if you're on a budget, then you will find some great options in the not-so-touristy Bonfim neighbourhood.

1. Where to stay in Porto for the first time & sightseeing & nightlife: Baixa/Downtown

Downtown Porto, also known as Baixa, is one of the best places to stay if you are a first-timer. This district is located in the heart of the city and is perfect for sightseeing. The preserved architecture from past centuries is a beautiful sight, with Baroque and Neoclassical buildings lining the cobblestoned streets.

porto where to stay

The great thing about Downtown is that there are so many great restaurants, coffee shops, and bars for you to explore. Furthermore, the nightlife opportunities in this area surpass all others and are the best in the whole city!

In Baixa, the main activity is sightseeing and immersing yourself in the city's culture. You can walk to most things or take the Hop-On Hop-Off bus. Alternatively, I recommend this fun eBike city tour!

You should not miss the Clérigos Tower, which is the most iconic landmark in Porto and a popular spot for photographers. This major baroque building was built in the 18th century! Another popular sight you shouldn't miss out on is the Porto Cathedral, which was built in the 12th century, making it one of the oldest monuments in Porto.

The downtown area is also great for all you shopaholics out there! Santa Catarina Street is the city's main shopping street, which is full of designer stores and cute little boutique shops. And for those who want to explore a bit further, right next to Santa Catarina Street is Bolhão Market, where you will find fresh produce and souvenirs.

Lastly, the absolute highlight here for most of you, especially if you're a Potterhead like me, is Livraria Lello, the famous Harry Potter bookshop. The bookstore was a massive inspiration for J.K. Rowling while writing her first book. You can easily spend an hour here browsing through books while admiring the magnificent Art Deco architecture.
