If you're planning a trip to Thailand, make sure not to miss Pai Town! Located in the northern part of Thailand, just a few hours from Chiang Mai, it's the ultimate mountain getaway that offers stunning waterfalls, hot springs, and beautiful rice fields.

While most people only head to Chiang Mai when visiting Thailand's North, Pai gives you a chance to experience the true beauty of the Thai mountains. I've been to Chiang Mai many times over the years, but it actually took me a while to get myself to visit Pai and I still wonder why I didn't go there earlier!

Don't be fooled by its small size – Pai packs a punch! With its incredible hippie vibe, you'll almost be guaranteed to want to stay longer and explore the charming town filled with beautiful little restaurants and cafes. And let's not forget about the breathtaking mountain landscapes surrounding Pai, including the famous Pai Canyon.

After I finally made it to Pai, I felt inspired to tell more people about this place and put together a guide on where to stay in Pai. From my favorite areas in Pai to the top hotels, I've got you covered to ensure your trip to this hidden gem is as amazing as possible.

Best areas to stay in Pai

Pai is not a huge city but rather a charming mountain town. It's pretty straightforward to figure out where to stay and explore. However, some areas are better suited for certain types of travelers.

So, here are my top three favorite neighborhoods:

For most people, Pai Centre is the best choice. It's the heart of the city and offers plenty of amazing hotels, guesthouses, hostels, and a wide range of restaurants and shopping opportunities. The main street here is Chaisongkram Road, also called Pai Walking Street. It's backpacker central!

If you're a couple, a backpacker, or simply want to experience the countryside or mountain village vibes, East River is perfect for you. This area is near the Big Buddha and filled with cozy hostels, yoga studios, and charming little cafes, providing the ideal setting to relax and unwind.

Last but not least, one of the coolest parts of Pai is North Pai. It's like a slice of rural Thailand, with picturesque rice fields and incredible boutique resorts that offer a truly secluded experience.

So, whether you're looking for convenience, tranquility, or a taste of authentic countryside life, Pai has something for everyone.

1. Where to stay in Pai for the first time: Pai Centre (around Pai Walking Street)

If you're wondering where to stay in Pai for the first time, I'd recommend finding yourself accommodation in Pai Centre, also known as Downtown Pai. It's situated on the west side of the Pai River, right around the bustling Pai Walking Street.

Personally, I absolutely love this area because it's where all the action is happening! While Pai is generally quiet compared to other places in Thailand, the center has a fantastic night market, along with a wide variety of restaurants, bars, shops, and cafes.

Staying in the city center also gives you easy access to all the amazing day trips and activities around Pai, like the hot springs, waterfalls, and of course, the famous Pai Canyon.

If you're feeling adventurous, you can rent a motorbike or bicycle to explore the beautiful surrounding area at your own pace. Pai was actually the first time I ever drove a scooter. Even though I had no experience riding one, I felt safe as the streets weren't as crowded as those in Chiang Mai.

Things to do in Pai Centre

As you might have already guessed, Pai Centre is jam-packed with awesome things to do, all within easy reach. That's why I think it's perfect for first-timers.

One of my personal favorites in the afternoon or evening is strolling down the lively Pai Walking Street (which becomes the Pai Night Market around sunset), where you'll find local vendors selling handmade crafts, clothing, and souvenirs. And if you're a foodie like me, don't miss out on the incredible street food at the Pai Night Market.

For those seeking adventure, renting a motorbike or bicycle is an absolute must in Pai. It's the best way to explore the stunning countryside and visit nearby waterfalls, hot springs, and temples.

And if you're up for extra fun, give tubing down the river a try! It's a super popular activity among backpackers, and many hostels offer it. You can actually bring your own drinks, so tip, head into 7/11 before. Fair warning though, this is totally something for young folks and it gets very crowded! Certainly not a cultural thing to do.

When it comes to food, Pai Centre has an abundance of options that will leave you spoiled for choice. One of my absolute favorites is the Om Garden Cafe. It's a beautiful outdoor spot with delicious food and a peaceful atmosphere, perfect for brunch or a mid-day snack.

One of the best hotels in Pai, and a personal favorite of mine, is the Pai Village Boutique Resort. It's such a beautiful place in the heart of Pai, offering charming bungalow-style rooms, a gorgeous pool, and even a koi pond. The staff here are incredibly friendly and always ready to assist with any questions or needs you may have.

2. Where to stay in Pai for couples: Pai East River

If you're after that perfect balance of being close to all the action while still enjoying a peaceful countryside vibe, East River is the place to stay in Pai.

It's situated on the East side of the Pai River and offers a more laid-back atmosphere compared to the town center.

You'll find plenty of affordable places to stay here, making it an ideal spot for couples, solo travelers and backpackers alike. There is also a nice selection of boutique hotels and resorts, so anyone can have a great time here.

And if you're a foodie like me, you'll love the amazing cafes and bars in this area. And of course, I've tried most of them!

For all you adventurers out there, East River is also the starting point for many exciting hikes, including the one to the breathtaking Mae Yen Waterfall.

Things to do in Pai East River

The East River may be a bit quieter compared to Pai Centre and Pai Walking Street, but there are still plenty of awesome things to do and see.

One of the must-visit places near the East River is the Tha Pai Hot Springs. It's the perfect spot to relax and soak in natural hot springs while surrounded by beautiful scenery.

For all you outdoor enthusiasts, exploring Pai Canyon is an absolute must-do activity. The views from the top are simply breathtaking and totally worth the hike!

And if you're up for some spiritual nourishment and some stunning mountain views, don't miss out on visiting the Big Buddha of Pai. I love coming here around sunset or sunrise. Keep in mind that there are about 500 stairs to climb.

If you're looking to cool off from the hot weather, you've gotta check out Fluid Swimming Pool. It's an excellent spot for hanging out and enjoying drinks by the pool. It's super popular with travelers and even some locals come here.

To all my vegan friends, you're gonna love this! Make sure to stop by Bom Bowls. They serve up some of the best Acai Bowls in town, and the prices won't break the bank either.

To end the day on a beautiful note, head over to Sunset Bar. Just as the name suggests, it's the perfect spot to catch a stunning sunset while sipping on some refreshing drinks. But hey, fair warning, if you decide to stay past sunset, Sunset Bar turns into a club-like atmosphere. So, it's also the perfect spot for a night out – Pai style!

For a family or friends trip, consider renting a private villa in North Pai or checking out one of the resorts. Trust me, you'll be treated to breathtaking views and the privacy you crave, all while being conveniently close to town for any activities or day trips you have in mind.

The Sai Ngam Hot Spring is a must-visit spot in North Pai. It's a peaceful and scenic area surrounded by lush greenery, with natural hot springs to relax in.

Explore the distinctive Chinese-style buildings, wander through lush tea plantations, savor authentic Yunnanese cuisine, and soak in panoramic mountain vistas at Santichon Village in Pai, Thailand. There's even a Great Wall of China replica.

If you're feeling hungry or in search of a cool brunch and coffee spot, then Art Farm Studio has got you covered with its amazing selection of international dishes. Here, you can enjoy your typical avocado toast and flat whites at a great price.

🗓️ How many days should I spend in Pai?

I would recommend spending at least 2-3 days in Pai to fully experience the laid-back atmosphere and explore the surrounding areas. However, if you have more time, you can easily spend a week or longer in Pai as there are plenty of activities and sights to see within the surroundings. With plenty of hostels and resorts offering fantastic Wi-Fi and cafe spaces to work from, many digital nomads find themselves extending their stay here for more than just a week. Pai is also an incredible place to join a yoga retreat or learn Thai cooking, so there's a ton of stuff to do if you decide to stay for 2 weeks or even longer in Pai.

🌅 Where is the best place to see the sunset in Pai?

The best place to catch the sunset in Pai is at Pai Canyon. It's a popular spot to hike and take in the stunning views, especially during golden hour. I also recommend the Big Buddha as an alternative spot with spectacular views. Another great option is to watch the sunset from a bar or restaurant in the town center, such as Sunset Bar & Restaurant.

🛵 Is it necessary to rent a scooter in Pai?

While it's not necessary to rent a scooter in Pai, it is highly recommended as it's the most convenient and affordable way to explore the surrounding areas. Scooters can be rented for around 150-200 Baht per day and allow you to visit nearby waterfalls, hot springs, and other attractions at your own pace. Just make sure to wear a helmet and drive carefully, as the roads in Pai can be winding and steep. 🚗 How do I get to Pai?

The most popular way to get to Pai is by taking a minibus or a private taxi from Chiang Mai, which takes around 3 to 4 hours. You can also rent a car and drive yourself, or take a local bus, but these options may take longer. Some travelers choose to rent motorbikes in Chiang Mai and ride to Pai through the scenic route of Mae Hong Son, but this route can be challenging and dangerous for inexperienced riders. So, I usually recommend hopping on a minibus or getting a taxi.

Pai has an airport, but as far as I know, it does not have any commercial flights operating.
