Which Gili Island is Best for You?

The three Gili Islands offer an unforgettable experience

The Gili Islands, located off the northwest coast of Lombok, Indonesia, are a trio of idyllic tropical paradises, each offering a different experience from couples honeymoons to young backpackers looking to party.

Visiting the Gili Islands is one of my favorite tropical getaways from Bali's mainland. With the island's policy of no motorized vehicles allowed, world-class beaches, beautiful dive sites, and tasty food, it's a dream destination only comparable to Bali's Nusa Islands (learn everything about them, here).

Best Time to Visit the Gili Islands

Sunrising over the Gili Islands

The best time to visit the Gili Islands is during the dry season, which runs from May to October. During this period, you can expect sunny days, calm seas, and the perfect conditions for water activities like snorkeling and diving.

The wet season, from November to April, brings heavier rainfall and rougher seas, affecting outdoor activities and potentially ferry travel schedules, especially if you are traveling with children. On the other side, the islands are less crowded during this time.

How Many Days to Spend on the Gili Islands

Horse-drawn carriages are especially helpful to transport lugage from the bay to your Gili island hotel

If you want to get to know the island you've chosen, its vibe, and the different beaches and restaurants, a stay of 4 to 7 days is recommended (I've stayed for 4 days, and it was ideal for me).

If you have fewer days but still want to enjoy one or all of the three Gili Islands, even a 2 to 3-day visit can provide a nice experience of these tropical Indonesian island gems.

Getting to and Around the Gili Islands

Typical fast boat to travel between the islands and also to the Gili Islands from Bali of Lombok

Getting to the Gili Islands from Bali or Lombok typically involves a fast boat ride. Fast boats from Bali depart from several ports, including Padang Bai, Serangan, and Amed, and take about 1.5 to 2.5 hours, depending on the Gili Island you choose as your destination.

From Lombok, boats depart from Bangsal Harbor, with a shorter crossing of around 15 to 30 minutes.

Travel Tip: Prepare yourself if you get seasick easily, as these trips can be quite rough if the sea is not calm.

Once on the islands, getting around is straightforward, as vehicles are not allowed. The main modes of transportation are bicycles (traditional or electric), horse-drawn carriages (also called taxis), and walking. Bikes can be rented easily, and I found them to be a great way to explore the islands.

Public ferries and private charters are available for inter-island travel, making it easy to hop between the Gili islands.
