Where to Stay In Tasmania: Most Beautiful Towns & Hotel Picks
Tasmania, also known as Australia's ‘natural state,' is a beautiful island that often doesn't receive the attention it truly deserves. But you know what? Maybe that's actually a good thing! This island state, located 240km off the mainland of Australia, offers the ultimate escape from the hustle and bustle of big city life along the East Coast and the scorching summer heat of the Australian mainland.
Once you visit Tasmania, I can almost guarantee it will quickly make its way to your heart pretty quickly. Don't be surprised if you leave feeling like you found a new favorite state in Australia.
Tasmania has an incredibly laid-back and peaceful atmosphere that you just can't help but fall in love with. With almost half of the island being protected by national parks, wildlife reserves, or world heritage sites, you can imagine that it's all about exploring nature and taking a breather from the real world.
I know planning to visit Tasmania can be challenging, as there are some main towns like Launceston and Hobart but plenty of smaller places to explore as well. If you're wondering where to stay in Tasmania, I've put together a handy guide featuring my favorite cities, places, and hotels so that you can find the perfect fit for your trip, no matter if you're looking for cozy boutique with a fire pit, a modern apartment along the Hobart waterfront or an intimate getaway with a outdoor tub overlooking nature.
Best places to stay in Tasmania
Tasmania may be a lot smaller compared to mainland Australia, but it's still quite a big place. It'll take you around 5 to 6 hours to drive across the island. So, it's important to make the right decision when choosing the ideal place for you.
If you're visiting for the first time, Hobart is a great starting point. It's the state capital and has amazing restaurants, fantastic hotels, arts scene and beautiful nature close by.
For all you lovebirds or those seeking a romantic getaway, I suggest checking out Coles Bay on the west coast of Tasmania. It's part of Freycinet National Park, which is known for the iconic Wineglass Bay.
Looking for cool city vibes? Then Launceston is the perfect pick. This place has an incredible food scene, and beautiful heritage architecture and is surrounded by stunning wine regions.
If you're traveling as a family, consider a trip to Bruny Island. It's close to Hobart but offers a more relaxed and peaceful atmosphere. You could even split your time between Hobart and Bruny Island!
If you're into trekking and hiking, the Cradle Mountain area is a must-visit. You'll find fantastic lodges and resorts to base yourself as you explore Tasmania's best hiking trails.
And if you're craving beautiful nature and stunning beaches, head up north to Stanley. It's the perfect place to relax and unwind.
Lastly, if you're traveling by ferry from the mainland, Devonport on the north of the island is the most convenient place for you to stay.
1. Where to stay in Tasmania for the first time: Hobart
Hobart, the capital city of Tasmania, is where many of you will first set foot on this beautiful island, thanks to the Hobart International Airport.
It's the largest city in Tasmania, situated on the banks of the River Derwent and at the foot of Mount Wellington.
Hobart is the perfect blend of everything from food to arts to architecture, which is why I absolutely love recommending it to first-timers. You'll find fantastic restaurants, bars, cafes, and some of the best hotels in Tasmania. Plus you'll be super close to the breathtaking nature that surrounds Hobart, perfect for hiking and exploring waterfalls or beaches.

Things to do in Hobart
Hobart is one of my favorite cities in Tasmania because there is just so much to do. One of my all-time favorite things to do in Hobart is visiting MONA (Museum of Old and New Art). Trust me, it's one of the weirdest, quirkiest, but also most fascinating museums I've ever been to.
Another must-do activity is making your way up Mount Wellington. You can either hike or drive up this majestic mountain, which offers stunning views of the city below.
If you happen to be in Hobart on a Saturday, you absolutely can't miss out on the famous Salamanca Market. It's open from 8.30 am til 3 pm and is the perfect place to grab some local produce and souvenirs, and of course, try some delicious food.
For all you history buffs out there, a day trip to the Port Arthur Historic Site is an absolute must. This former convict settlement offers an insightful look into Australia's dark past and rich history.
And of course, no visit to Hobart is complete without grabbing a cup of coffee and some lunch at my favorite spot, Hamlet Hobart Cafe.

2. Where to stay in Tasmania for couples: Coles Bay
Coles Bay is a favorite spot for a romantic getaway or a cozy vacation. But, to be honest, it's perfect for anyone who just needs a little escape to enjoy some well-deserved relaxation and seclusion.
Located on the East Coast of Tasmania in the Great Oyster Bay, Coles Bay is famous for being the gateway to the stunning Freycinet National Park. However, this charming tourist town has so much more to offer than just the most famous National Park at its doorstep.
The beaches here are absolutely breathtaking, and you'll often have them all to yourself. When it comes to food, the restaurants in Coles Bay serve some of the tastiest seafood you'll find in all of Tasmania. As for accommodation options, the resorts and lodges in Coles Bay are honestly some of the coziest and best options for your stay in Tasmania. You can even find some with a freestanding bath, so divine!

Things to do in Coles Bay
One of the main reasons people visit Coles Bay is to explore Freycinet National Park. This stunning National Park is home to one of Tasmania's most iconic and beautiful beaches, Wineglass Bay. To get a good view of this beach, I recommend taking the hike up to the lookout point.
If you're lucky, you may even spot some of Tasmania's unique wildlife while hiking, such as wombats and wallabies or the spiky echidna. The best time to spot wombats in Tasmania is around dusk. Look out for their teddy-bear-shaped eyes, usually trekking through the grass.
For a delicious seafood feast, you must visit Freycinet Marine Farm. Here, you can sample some of the freshest oysters and other seafood caught in the nearby waters. My favorite would be their scallops!
And for a more relaxed day, take a stroll down 9 Mile Beach, which is just a short drive from Coles Bay.
Don't forget to stop by Melshell Oyster Shack for some more tasty oysters! Plus, you'll love the views from the simple chairs out the front of their van.

3. Where to stay in Tasmania for cool city vibes: Launceston
Launceston is, without a doubt, one of the most up-and-coming places in Tasmania. Not only is it the second biggest city in Tasmania, but it has also been voted the most liveable city quite a few times.
Launceston is almost like a ‘better' (if I can even say that!) version of Hobart. It's smaller, so most places of interest are within walking distance. On top of that, it's packed with amazing restaurants, bars, and activities, surrounded by wine regions and the breathtaking nature of Northern Tasmania.
It's also got the Tamar River running through it, which is great for kayaking and other water sports.
When it comes to accommodation options, Launceston has some fantastic hotels. So, if you're looking for the coolest city to stay in Tasmania, Launceston is definitely the place to be.

Things to do in Launceston
As I mentioned earlier, Launceston has a lot to offer when it comes to activities and experiences.
One of the coolest things to do close by is visiting Cataract Gorge. You can explore this stunning river gorge by kayak or boat. It's seriously one of the most beautiful parts of nature in Tasmania. You can either rent a kayak and paddle around yourself or hop on one of the river cruises.
If you're an animal lover, you absolutely have to visit Old Mac's Farm. It's technically a campsite, but the owners also have a privately owned farm that's open to the public. You can pet alpacas and other adorable farm animals.
For those craving adventure, head to Penny Royal Adventures. They've got climbing, zip-lining, and more. It's a blast for the whole family, so if you're traveling with your kids, you've got to check it out.
And for all you beverage enthusiasts, don't miss the Tamar Valley Wine Region with plenty of cellar doors. They've got some of the best wineries in Tasmania. And right in the center of Launceston, there's the James Boag Brewery where you can enjoy some craft beers if you prefer.

The activities on Bruny Island are truly endless. From spotting wildlife to enjoying fun and not-too-challenging hikes, there's something for everyone in the family. On top of that, the culinary experiences here are phenomenal, especially if you're into seafood.

Things to do on Bruny Island
One of the absolute best things to do on Bruny Island is to take a wildlife tour at Adventure Bay. Join one of the eco-boat tours, they are honestly incredible. You'll get to explore the island and witness stunning landscapes and wildlife, like dolphins and sea lions.
If you're up for a family-friendly hike, I highly recommend the Cape Queen Elizabeth trail. It requires some level of fitness but is not too challenging, and the views of the island are simply stunning.
For more family-friendly hikes and trails, you should also check out the South Bruny National Park where you can spot loads of Wallabies close to the visitor centre.
For a truly picturesque view, you've got to check out ‘The Neck', which connects North with South Bruny Island. Hike up to the lookout point, and you'll be rewarded with sweeping panoramas of both sides of the island. The views are incredible but it can be a little more challenging as there are quite a few steps involved.
If you're a seafood lover like me, you can't miss visiting Get Shucked. The little oyster shack has some of the best seafood on Bruny Island.
Last but not least, surfers, listen up! Cloudy Bay is the place to be. It's one of Tasmania's best surfing beaches, with waves that are great for beginners but also for advanced surfers.

Just keep in mind that you'll be a bit far away from the bigger cities, so don't expect too many restaurants or supermarkets nearby. This in turn is incredibly nice as it gives you a real sense of being remote.

Things to do near Cradle Mountain
One of the absolute must-do activities in Cradle Mountain is visiting Devils@Cradle, a sanctuary for Tasmanian devils. Here, you'll have the incredible chance to see these unique and endangered creatures up close and learn all about the conservation efforts to protect them.
And of course, the real star here is hiking in the stunning Cradle Mountain National Park and Lake St Clair National Park. There are several trails of varying difficulty, so whether you're a seasoned pro or just starting out, there's something for every type of hiker. My personal favorite trail is the ‘Dove Lake Circuit', which is a 6-kilometer loop that takes you around the picturesque lake. I highly recommend it.
Now, after a day of hiking, you deserve some relaxation. That's why you should treat yourself to the Waldheim Alpine Spa. The spa is located in a cozy alpine hut which is part of the Cradle Mountain Lodge. it also has an outdoor hot tub with a view of the pine trees and offers champagne, snacks, and massages as well.

6. Where to stay in Tasmania for the best nature: Stanley
If you're looking for a peaceful and picturesque escape in Tasmania, then Stanley is the right spot for you. It's a cozy and romantic little town on the northwest coast of Tasmania. While it's perfect for nature lovers, it's also an amazing spot for couples seeking a special place for a quieter getaway (just like most places in Tasmania).
In Stanley, you'll find some of my favorite little charming homestays and hotels. Nothing here is flashy or luxurious like in Hobart – it's all about the cozy and cute, creating a romantic atmosphere. The highlight of the town is The Nut, an enormous flat-topped hill that offers stunning views of the surrounding areas.
Stanley is also the perfect base for all outdoor and nature enthusiasts. Just a 20-minute drive away, you can find Tarkine Wilderness, one of the largest temperate rainforests in Australia. Exploring this ancient rainforest and its natural beauty is like stepping into a prehistoric world, with giant ferns, towering trees, and unique wildlife. It's truly a nature lover's paradise!

One of the most popular things to do in Stanley is taking the Nut Chair Lift up to the top of The Nut. I can tell you, the panoramic views of the town and surrounding areas are absolutely breathtaking! It's a must-do when you're visiting.
If you're up for a more active adventure, then head to the Tarkine Wilderness for some hiking and trekking. There are plenty of different trails throughout the entire rainforest, making it easily accessible for anyone. I recommend coming in your own car or renting one while you're in the area, as everything is quite spread out.

7. Where to stay in Tasmania if you arrive by ferry: Devenport
Most people arrive in Tasmania by plane and fly into Hobart International Airport, but you also have the option to take the ferry from Melbourne. If you choose this option, then Devonport is most likely your arrival point on the island. It's Tasmania's third-largest city and has a lovely waterfront area with cafes, restaurants, and shops.
Devonport is also a great base for exploring some of the best attractions in Tasmania's northwest region, such as Cradle Mountain National Park and Tarkine. Plus, it's only a 1-hour drive from Launceston, making it an ideal location for road trippers.
