Oslo, the capital of Norway, is one of those places that still flies a little under the radar when it comes to European cities.

I still remember clearly when I visited, I didn't expect much, but Oslo turned out to be such an amazing city with so much to do. It really surprised me, and I didn't want to leave!

The Oslo Opera House is a must-visit in Oslo.

The city centre of Oslo is simply amazing, filled with activities, history, culture, and unique food options. But it's not just about the city itself.

Oslo is also a great base to explore the surrounding hiking trails and ski slopes. If you're considering giving this exciting city a go, let me show you the best areas, neighborhoods, and things to do in this guide on where to stay in Oslo.

Best areas to stay in Oslo

Looking for the perfect neighborhood in Norway's capital can be a challenge with so many options. But don't worry, I've got you covered with my favorite neighborhoods and reasons why they're awesome:

If you're visiting for the first time, staying in the City Centre is a no-brainer. You'll find all the famous museums and the city's main attractions, along with amazing hotels, bars, and restaurants.

Foodies and nightlife lovers should definitely check out Aker Brygge. It's a super hip area close to the city centre, packed with great food spots and bars.

For those seeking a quieter vibe, Gamle Oslo is perfect. It's a little outside the city centre, but with excellent public transport, you can easily dive into all the action whenever you want.

If you're on a budget, Grønland is your go-to. It's just outside the city center, but you'll find some more affordable accommodation options.

One of my personal favorites is Frogner. It can be a bit quieter, making it perfect for a romantic couples' vacation.

And if you're into cool, artsy, and hipster vibes, Grunerlokka is the spot to be in Oslo.

1. Where to stay in Oslo for the first time: City Centre

Wide view of Royal Palace in Oslo, Norway.
The Royal Palace of Oslo, you can visit inside during the summer season.

Oslo's city centre, or Sentrum as the locals call it, is your go-to spot for everything you need to have a perfect trip to Oslo.

You'll find amazing hotels, restaurants, bars, and plenty of shopping opportunities. And that's not all – you'll also have super easy access to tons of museums and all the tourist attractions like the Royal Palace and the Royal Palace Park.

But hey, I won't sugarcoat it – all this awesomeness comes at a price. Staying in the Oslo city center can be a bit more expensive than other parts of Oslo, and even prices in bars and restaurants tend to be a little higher. It's totally worth it for the vibrant atmosphere and the convenience of being right in the heart of the action.

Best area for:

  • First-time visitors

  • Sightseeing

  • Convenience

Things to do in Oslo City Centre

The City Center is undoubtedly one of the best areas in Oslo to immerse yourself in the local culture. Exploring the city's incredible museums is the way to go. The Nobel Peace Center, the National Museum of Art and Architecture, and the Viking Ship Museum are just a few spots you absolutely have to check out.

If you're anything like me and love the great outdoors, you can also rent a bike and experience Oslo like a true local. Or simply take a leisurely stroll through the stunning Royal Palace Park and visit the Royal Palace.

And when it comes to food, the City Center won't disappoint you either – it's bursting with amazing restaurants serving everything from traditional Norwegian dishes to international cuisine. Personally, I highly recommend Elias Mat & Sant, a modern gem that dishes out mouthwatering Norwegian delicacies.

2. Where to stay in Oslo for foodies & nightlife lovers: Aker Brygge

Bridge through canal in Aker Brygge neighbourhood.

Aker Brygge – think of it as Oslo's culinary playground and the epicenter of nightlife. This area is just buzzing with energy and delicious aromas wafting out from every corner.

As someone who's a self-proclaimed foodie (and proud of it), I can tell you that you're in for a real treat if you choose to stay around here.

Strolling along the waterfront, you'll find everything from cozy cafés where the baristas know their beans like the back of their hands to swanky restaurants that make you not want to leave Oslo again.

And when the sun dips below the horizon, that's when Aker Brygge truly shines. The bars here aren't just places to grab a drink; they're great local hangouts and a chance to mingle with travelers and locals alike.

Best area for:

  • Food enthusiasts

  • Nightlife seekers

  • Waterfront views

Things to do in Aker Brygge

Aker Brygge isn't just about stuffing your face and sipping cocktails (although, let's be honest, that's a big part of its charm). It's also a cultural hotspot. The Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art is right there, and it's absolutely one of my favorite museums.

Now, if you're looking to burn off some of those calories, why not hire a kayak and paddle around the Oslo Fjord? It's ridiculously picturesque and gives you a whole new perspective on the city.

Remember to just wander around too. Aker Brygge's boardwalks are perfect for leisurely walking with an ice cream in hand, and you might even stumble upon some impromptu street performances.

3. Where to stay in Oslo for families: Gamle Oslo

Munch Museum view from the sea.
Views of the unusual building that houses the Munch Museum.

Gamle Oslo is the kind of place where you can let the kids roam around (with you close by, of course) and not feel like you're stepping on any city slickers' toes. It's got this laid-back vibe that makes you want to take a deep breath and just relax.

If your family's into history – like, really cool old stuff – then you're gonna love the Medieval Park. It's like stepping into a time machine, minus the pesky paradoxes. The Munch Museum will get the kids (and you!) wide-eyed with some truly mind-blowing art.

Plus, Gamle Oslo is pretty much just a short walk away from everything. And with family-friendly restaurants galore, you won't have to deal with any hangry meltdowns.

You definitely won't want to miss out on the Ekebergparken Sculpture Park. It's not just about the awesome artwork, but the views of the city are simply amazing.

And speaking of must-sees, the Oslo Opera House is a total architectural marvel. You can even walk on the roof and get breathtaking views of the city. It's an experience like no other.

And if you're looking for a cool spot to beat the summer heat, head over to the Sorenga Seawater Pool. It's a floating pool right in the Oslo Fjord, perfect for a refreshing swim and some family fun. I absolutely loved it, and I'm sure you will too!

Grønland is the real deal if you want to experience Oslo like a local, and let's face it, who doesn't? This multicultural neighborhood is brimming with life, and you'll discover plenty of quirky shops, vibrant markets, and eateries serving up flavors from all around the globe.

This district has got character and a bucket-load of street art that's definitely some of the best in the city. If you're a bit of a history nerd like me, the Intercultural Museum is a must-visit.

But what I love about Grønland is its authenticity. There's no touristy veneer here; it's all about getting stuck in and living it up with the locals. Seriously, grab an outdoor table at one of the cafés, order a steamy chai latte, and just watch the world bustle by.

Best area for:

Walking along the riverbanks is peaceful and gives you a little taste of nature in the middle of the urban jungle.

Grønlands Torg is a vibrant square in the heart of Oslo, known for its diverse cultural atmosphere, bustling market, and eclectic mix of shops and cafes.

Moreover, the nightlife in Gronland is as diverse as the neighborhood itself. There are cool little bars like Asylet, where you can kick back with a drink and maybe even catch some live music. And it's all without the pricey tourist mark-up you find in other parts of the city.

And if you want to add some culture to your stay, be sure to check out The Vigeland Museum. It showcases the life and work of Gustav Vigeland, the artist behind the sculptures in Frogner Park.

But the real star around here is the Oslo City Museum. It's in Frogner Manor and it's a treasure trove of the city's history. No dusty old displays here, just fascinating stories that give you a peek into Oslo's past.
