I adore this town not only for its beauty but also for the fantastic opportunity it provides to immerse oneself in Scandinavian and Norwegian culture, architecture, and food. On top of that, Bergen is in a great location and a fantastic base to explore the surrounding nature.

Bergen itself is small and easily navigable on foot, so once you know what each area has to offer, choosing where to stay in Bergen becomes a breeze. Let me share my favorite neighborhoods in Bergen with you, so you can pick the one that suits you best.

Best areas to stay in Bergen

As I mentioned before, Bergen isn't a massive city, but that's what adds to its charm. So let me share my favorite handful of neighborhoods with you:

If it's your first time visiting, I suggest keeping it simple and staying in Sentrum, which is the city centre of Bergen. From here, you'll be within walking distance of most tourist attractions, hotels, restaurants, and great shopping spots.

If you prefer a more laid-back experience, especially if you're traveling with your family, Nordnes, just outside the busy Bergen city centre, will be perfect for you. It's a great way to unwind and enjoy some peace and quiet.

If you're looking for fun nightlife and fantastic dining options, then look no further than Bryggen. It's my go-to place for good bars, restaurants, and clubs.

And if you're all about those cool student and hipster vibes, you've got to check out Nygard, south of the city center. It's a neighborhood that's buzzing with energy and is considered the coolest area by many of the locals and myself!

1. Where to stay in Bergen for the first time: Sentrum/City Centre

Sentrum is hands down the place to be if you're visiting Bergen for the first time. It's super convenient and the obvious choice for your stay.

The location is spot on, within walking distance of all the famous landmarks like Bryggen (the Old Wharf) and the fish market, which are a UNESCO World Heritage site thanks to those stunning Hanseatic buildings.

Sentrum is also a haven for foodies, offering a wide range of restaurants and cafes. Whether you're craving traditional Norwegian cuisine or international flavors, Sentrum has got you covered with mouthwatering options.

Let's talk about accommodation. I won't sugarcoat it, Bergen in general, and Sentrum in particular, can be a bit pricey. But don't you worry! You can still find some budget-friendly options like apartments or hostels that won't break the bank.

Things to do in Bergen Sentrum

The Bergen city center is home to some of my absolute favorite activities in the city. As I've already mentioned, Bergen is the perfect spot to dive into Norway's rich culture and history, and the best way to do that is by checking out some of the museums in the city, such as Bergen Kunsthall, an art gallery that showcases the incredible work of local artists.

In Sentrum, you can also visit the Bergen Fish Market. I get that it might not be everyone's cup of tea, but I absolutely love it. There's something so fascinating about seeing the local fishermen selling their fresh catch at this outdoor market. Plus, you can't miss out on the chance to grab some delicious fish sandwiches and other treats while you're there. It's also a great market to pick up fresh fruit and vegetables.

And of course, taking a stroll around the charming cobblestone streets and admiring the beautiful architecture is an absolute must-do in Sentrum, there are plenty of amazing photo opportunities.

All in all, Sentrum is the perfect blend of convenience, history, and culture, making it an excellent choice for first-time visitors to Bergen.

If you're the type who prefers to take it easy, maybe you're even traveling with your kids, or you just want to feel like you're a world away from the hustle and bustle, Nordnes is your little slice of paradise in Bergen.

What I love about Nordnes is that it lets you have the best of both worlds. It's calm, but not boring — we're talking seaside tranquility with a community feel that's warm and welcoming. You can wander down to the local coffee shop, and by the time you leave, you'll be chatting with the barista like old pals.

Staying here you'll see a more authentic side of Bergen. Also, accommodations are brilliant for anyone on a more moderate budget as there's a variety of charming guesthouses, hotels, and B&Bs where you can really soak up that hometown feel.

One of my go-to spots in Nordnes is Nordnesparken, a beautiful park next to the Akvariet (aquarium). Grab a blanket, and some local snacks, and have yourself a blissful day in the park.

If you're here in the summer, join the locals for a dip in the sea at ‘Nordnes Sjøbad' – it's an outdoor swimming facility with a lot of local character.

The Bergen Aquarium might just be the highlight if you've got kiddos or if you're a kid at heart. They have sea lions, fish from all corners of the ocean, and even penguins. I mean, who doesn't like penguins, right?

And if you're in the mood for a day trip exploration, Nordnes is your spot to hop on a boat cruise to the nearby Fjords and check out the famous Mostraumen strait.

I've also got a great coffee or lunch spot that I loved visiting and want to share with you. It's called Lovetann Cafe, and it's the cutest cafe with a real traditional vibe. They serve amazing coffee and delicious brunch items that you just can't resist.

With its charming waterfront setting, you can feel the air is rich with the aroma of fresh seafood and spices, and every corner has a new delicacy to try in Bryggen. If you enjoy food as much as I do and cannot go past sipping on cocktails as the sun dips below the horizon, you're in for a treat.

Of course, Bryggen is also what makes Bergen so special. Here, you can find the postcard-perfect little houses that the city is so famous for.

Things to do in Bryggen

As a UNESCO World Heritage site, you can't miss exploring the iconic and colorful buildings of Bryggen. Take a stroll through the narrow streets and feel like you've stepped back in time.

Floibanen, the funicular that takes you to the top of Mount Fløyen, is a must-do activity in Bryggen. The views from the top are spectacular, and there are plenty of hiking trails for those who love the great outdoors.

Let's chat about where to grab dinner. Bryggeloftet & Stuene is the perfect spot to try some traditional Norwegian cuisine, and it's also the oldest restaurant in Bergen. I personally absolutely recommend the reindeer steak here.

Have you ever wandered around a new city, wishing you could just join one of those super lively local parties? Bryggen's got you covered. My go-to spot here is Bar3. They have amazing cocktails and a lively atmosphere, which is perfect for meeting some locals and experiencing authentic nightlife.

And for those with a soft spot for the quirky and unique, how can I not mention Det Lille Kaffe Kompaniet. It's this adorable little coffee shop tucked away from the main path, and their coffees are some of the best in town.

If you've got a taste for the hip and happening, you're going to fall hard for this neighborhood. It’s the trendiest spot with a young crowd in Bergen for sure, and it has this electric energy that just pulls you in.

I know it's not exactly a Berlin-type hipster area, but it's the coolest spot in Bergen! And let me tell you, it has the absolute best café and art scene. Plus, this is where you'll find Bergen University.

So, if you're looking for a hip and happening place that is also more of a budget-friendly Bergen neighborhood, this is it.

When you mosey on over to Nygard, check out the street art. It's like an open-air gallery where the walls sing with colors and the murals tell the stories of the city. You could spend some hours just getting lost among them.

Nygard boasts numerous art galleries and pop-up shops that are sure to captivate your senses, creating an atmosphere brimming with creative energy.

One of my favorite spots in the Nygard neighborhood is the Bergen Coffee Roastery, conveniently located across from the Nygardspark Skatepark. They serve the best coffee in the area, and their homemade carrot cake is absolutely heavenly.
