Where to Stay in Lombok – Frequently Asked Questions
Where is Lombok & how do I get there?
Lombok Island is found between Bali and Sumbawa. Way less famous than the first one, it is slowly making its way to becoming a popular destination for people who fancy untouched nature, dreamy beaches, wild surfing spots – but without the crowds.
Part of the Nusa Tenggara province, its major city is Mataram. Lombok also includes three famous islands you probably heard of: Gili Trawangan, Gili Air and Gili Meno, or simply called just the Gili Islands.
This island has an international airport, Bandar Udara Internasional Lombok, which is 40 minutes away from the city of Mataram. It receives flights from Singapore, Bali, Jakarta, and Kuala Lumpur. A one-way trip from Bali will cost you about US$30 and takes less than half an hour.
From Bali, you can also catch a ferry or a fast boat leaving from Padang Bai, Serangan or Benoa Harbour. It will take about 2 hours and arrive either at Senggigi, Lembar, or Bangsal Harbour. A ticket is generally around US$50.
Is Lombok worth visiting?
Lombok is an amazing island, where a lot of natural wonders are still to discover. Your interests will play a major role in choosing the best area to stay in Lombok, and so, let's have a look at what the island is known for!
NATURE
The white sand and crystal clear beaches, snorkelling and diving, are some of the main assets of Lombok. The most popular beaches are around the main hubs, which are Kuta and Senggigi. But you will spend beautiful spots all around the island, such as Selong Belanak Beach and Tangsi Beach – strictly off the beaten path.
Hiking the sacred Mount Rinjani is probably one of the must-do here! On the way to the top, have a stop at Air Kalak hot springs, as well as the lake Segara Anak. For beginners and intermediates alike, head to Seger Beach, Ekas, Gerupuk, Areguling, Mawi, Selong Belanak, and more.
Lombok is filled with misty jungles, mountains, and viewpoints. Hence, trekking and hiking are inevitable to experience proximity to nature. Head to Tiu Kelep, Benang Kelambu and Mangku Sakti waterfalls. You can also hike to Tanjung Ringgit, nice trails leading to canons and a lighthouse built by the Japanese during WWII.
Visit the Gili islands: Gili Trawangan, Gili Air, Gili Meno and Gili Layar have beautiful underwater flora and fauna. Have a look at the Sekotong islands also, a day trip is always an occasion to enjoy a day on a boat, swimming and snorkelling!
CULTURE
Have a drive around Beleq, an indigenous village built in the 14th century, which displays local architecture and features of the ancient Sasak tribal culture! Indonesia is the heart centre of many weaving traditions. In Sukarare village, locals make fabrics by hand called tenun ikat and tenun songket. You can join workshops in which you learn all about the making process! And check out one of Lombok’s pearl farms!
NIGHTLIFE
Kuta and Senggigi are the central hubs for backpackers. Some local friends own the Bus Bar, good music and a happy crowd are guaranteed. Out of these spots, Lombok is certainly not a party island, except for Gili Trawangan – known all over the world for its hostel life, and bar-hopping craziness.
RELAXING TIME
After spending some time on the beach, you can head to some spas, which are mainly located around Kuta and Senggigi beaches. I've heard Puri Mas Spa is excellent. Concerning yoga studios, Mana Yoga North Kuta offers a complete experience: 5 classes per day, a poolside restaurant serving vegetarian and healthy food.
Which is better: Bali or Lombok?
Bali and Lombok are both great islands. Choosing the right one for you all depends on what you're looking to experience! Beyond the fact that they both have a town called Kuta (don’t get confused between the two!) and many cultural similarities, they fundamentally have a different atmosphere.
Historically, all Indonesian islands were separated and independent kingdoms. What brought them together today is the fact that they were all once Dutch colonies. And at the time of their independence, they were united under the name “Indonesia”. Bali and Lombok both have the same size, a similar cost of living, and a type of landscape, filled with jungle, volcanos, and beautiful scenery.
One main cultural difference is that Bali is a Hindu island, while Lombok is Muslim. Five times a day, you will hear the call to prayer – which might wake you during the night.
Balinese culture remains an essential asset to attract tourists to the island. Locals are very open and love to share stories and anecdotes with visitors. You'll surely have the occasion to learn about their fascinating history, religion, art and traditions.
Bali has been welcoming tourists for decades and consequently has reliable infrastructures – plenty of choices in terms of accommodation, western and healthy food, and things to do.
At such an extreme that tourism took over local culture in some places. Pollution, heavy traffic and over-urbanisation are some of the consequences of mass tourism.
More and more people start choosing Lombok because it is more untouched by mass tourism than its neighbor. On top of that, I'd dare to say that Lombok's beaches are way more beautiful and pristine than Bali's! Surfing is also better: fewer people in the water, better reefs and waves, while the water stays cleaner.
How many days do I need in Lombok?
I'd personally stay a week easily in Lombok if not 10 days. As we've seen, there are plenty of things to do! 3 days is a reasonable (and minimum) amount of time to spend on the island, allowing you to see the main beautiful hotspots. Especially if you combine Lombok with other islands, such as Bali and the Gilis.
Lombok is for nature lovers, hiking enthusiasts, divers, surfers, people who can appreciate what nature has to offer, who like untouched places, silence, and who can appreciate the local pace of life. If you recognise yourself in this description, then follow my advice and stay between 3 to 7 days on the island.
Where to Stay in Lombok – Final Words
Surely you have now plenty of choices to pick from the best hotel in Lombok! Whether it’s a laid-back holiday or an action-packed adventure trip, you will find Lombok covering all your basic needs and beyond. That’s why it’s such a great alternative to Bali!
