Where to stay in Playa del Carmen: BEST Location and Hotels
Mexico, especially the Caribbean side of Mexico, is honestly one of the most beautiful places you could ever choose for your next vacation.
The weather is amazing, the waters are warm, and the food is absolutely delicious. Who else loves Mexican food?
And let me tell you, there are very few places better to enjoy all of this than Playa del Carmen.
Playa del Carmen is located on the Riviera Maya on the Yucatan Peninsula, and it's my new favorite spot to enjoy a resort or hotel vacation. The city is packed with amazing boutique accommodations, great restaurants, and lively nightlife.
I've been lucky enough to visit Playa del Carmen several times, and now it's finally time for me to help you plan your own trip. In this guide, I'll break down where to stay in Playa del Carmen, including the best hotels and areas to stay for all types of travelers, from first-timers to families and couples.
Best areas to stay in Playa del Carmen
Playa del Carmen is actually pretty big with several different areas to stay in, and I'm happy to give you a rundown of my favorites.
For first-timers and party enthusiasts, staying around Fifth Avenue is the best. It's the main pedestrian street in Playa packed with shops, bars, and nightclubs – the perfect place to be right in the center of all the action. Plus, the beach is very close!
If you're backpacking or traveling on a budget, Centro/Downtown Playa del Carmen is ideal. You'll find plenty of hotels and hostels and delicious street food on every corner.
For families, I highly recommend Playacar, a gated community located just outside the city centre. Here, you'll have some of the best beaches, most of them are a lot quieter too! It's also an ideal destination for golf enthusiasts with some resorts offering direct access to the golf course.
Couples seeking a romantic getaway should head to Zazil-ha. Situated at the end of Fifth Street, it offers a fantastic escape with charming restaurants away from the city's hustle and bustle. I stayed here and loved it. It's a bit more hip and quirky and less mainstream like Fifth Avenue.
Lastly, if you're in search of ultimate luxury and seclusion, El Marlyn Azul is the place to be. This beach area boasts the most luxurious resorts in Playa del Carmen. It's also away from the main part of Playa making it more intimate and peaceful.
1. Where to stay in Playa del Carmen for the first time & best nightlife: Fifth Avenue
If you want to experience the heart of Playa del Carmen, the pedestrian street called Fifth Avenue (La Quinta Avenida) in Downtown Playa del Carmen is where it's at.
This bustling street is packed with bars, plenty of shops, nightclubs, and restaurants, making it the perfect place to dive right into the city's lively atmosphere and awesome nightlife.
Staying near Fifth Avenue is awesome because you'll be just a stone's throw away from the beach and the ferry terminal. I took a sailing trip around Cozumel and cannot recommend it enough!
Plus, Fifth Avenue is so centrally located that it's super easy to explore the rest of Playa del Carmen and even the rest of the Riviera Maya from here. The bus terminal is conveniently located right on Fifth Avenue.
Keep in mind, though, that it can get pretty noisy at times, so it might not be everyone's cup of tea. But if you're looking to dive into Playa del Carmen's nightlife, I definitely recommend looking for a place to stay right here!
Best area for:
First-timers
Nightlife
Close beach access
Things to do on Fifth Avenue
With Fifth Avenue being the absolute tourist center of everything happening in Playa del Carmen, there's loads to do here.
One of my favorite activities is going diving because some of the best dive shops in the city can be found right on Fifth Avenue.
I highly recommend giving it a try – it's some of the best diving in all of Mexico and the Riviera Maya! You can even go diving in one of the nearby cenotes, pretty unique!
You also have to try the delicious food this street has to offer. From authentic Mexican cuisine to international dishes, Fifth Avenue has plenty of dining options to satisfy any craving.
Personally, I absolutely love Las Hijas de la Tostada, their tostadas with ceviche are so good! For breakfast, I loved the French-inspired cafe Chez Celine. If you're looking for a relaxing day in a beach club, I recommend Mamita's Beach Club and Lido Beach Club.
For dinner, Porfirio's is great. And if you're up for a wild night out, Senor Frogs is the place to be.
For those looking to explore beyond Playa del Carmen, you're in luck! The ferry terminal on Fifth Avenue makes it super easy to hop over to the beautiful island of Cozumel for a day trip.
And if you're up for a longer adventure, you should take a trip to the famous Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza. It's just a day trip away!

2. Where to stay in Playa del Carmen for budget travelers: Downtown (Centro)
Downtown Playa del Carmen, also known as Centro, is the perfect spot for budget travelers who like to be close to 5th Avenue but do not want to pay the price tag.
It's got tons of affordable hostels, cute caf and budget-friendly restaurants, making it a dream for backpackers, solo travelers and anyone on a tight budget.
But here's the best part – despite being super affordable, you're still just a short walk away from Fifth Avenue and the beach. And if you're up for some adventure, you can easily hop on a bus and explore nearby towns like Tulum or Cancun.
I personally also love the downtown area in Playa because it's the ultimate foodie haven. Nothing beats grabbing some cheap and delicious tacos on the go, and without a doubt, El Fogon serves up the best al pastor tacos in town!
Choux Choux Cafe and Basic Foodie are two other favorites of mine that are close by.
Best area for:
Budget travelers
Backpackers
Foodies
Easy access to public transportation
Things to do in Downtown Playa del Carmen
Aside from exploring the nearby Fifth Avenue and its many bars, restaurants, and shops, you'll find plenty of things to do in Downtown Playa del Carmen. The main square, Plaza Paraiso, is a great spot for people-watching and immersing yourself in the local culture.
From Centro, you can also easily join a day tour or rent a car to explore the nearby cenotes. Cenotes are natural swimming holes unique to the Yucatan Peninsula, and they're a must-visit when in Playa del Carmen.
My favorites are Cenote Azul and Dos Ojos – both located just a short drive away from the downtown area towards Tulum. The highway down to Tulum is pretty easy to drive, just be mindful that Mexicans drive a bit differently and traffic can be heavy.

Playacar is known for its upscale atmosphere and features a combination of residential areas, luxury resorts, and golf courses. Divided into two phases, Playacar Phase 1 is primarily residential, while Playacar Phase 2 includes both residential areas and a more commercial zone with shops, restaurants, and hotels.
And don't worry – you won't be too far away from all the action. Playacar has its own shopping center, Playacar Center, and it's just a short walk or bike ride to Fifth Avenue and the beach. Plus, another great mall is on the edge of Fifth Avenue and Playacar, it's called Paseo del Carmen and is worth a visit.
And for families looking for some adventure, you'll find some of the coolest of activities in Playacar as well such as visiting the Xcaret Park or taking a catamaran tour to nearby islands.
Best area for:

Things to do in Playacar
Aside from visiting the popular Xcaret Park nearby, there are plenty of other family-friendly activities to do in Playacar. For a bit of history and culture, check out the Playacar Mayan Ruins, an archaeological site dating back to the 13th century.
If your family loves golfing, then you're in luck because Playacar has its own Hard Rock Golf Course with stunning views.
For a sweet treat, I recommend heading to Benditos, a local favorite ice cream shop known for its unique and delicious flavors.

4. Where to stay in Playa del Carmen for couples: Zazil-ha
And now, let me introduce you to my personal favorite spot: Zazil-ha.
Zazil-ha is my favorite because it is located at the very end of Fifth Avenue, which makes this neighborhood a lot quieter. But don't worry, there are still some fantastic restaurants around. And if you take a 10-minute walk down Fifth Avenue, you'll be right in the middle of all the action!
What I also love about Zazil-ha is that it feels a little more residential and less touristy than the whole Downtown area. It's a bit quirky and has some alternative hipster vibes.
The beach here is absolutely beautiful, and it's never as crowded as the centre of Playa del Carmen. Be aware, however, that the beaches in Playa get covered in seaweed during the months of April to August. While the beach is cleaned often, your beach experience could look a little different.
It's just the perfect spot for couples or anyone looking for a quieter and more laid-back experience in Playa del Carmen without being too far away from the center.
I actually stayed in a few different places across this neighborhood on a solo trip and it was simply perfect!
When it comes to accommodation, the area has some fantastic boutique hotels that I love, most come with a rooftop swimming pool and awesome ocean views, perfect for couples looking for a romantic getaway.
Best area for:
Couples
Romance
Relaxation
Solo travelers who prefer a quieter atmosphere
Things to do in Zazil-ha
Besides enjoying the beautiful beaches and strolling down Fifth Avenue, there are a few more cool things you can check out. Venture further up the beach towards El Marlyn Azul and explore the beaches around there.
Playa Punta Esmeralda and Playa 88 are the coolest beaches in Playa del Carmen, a local go-to spot.
Zazil-ha also has some great beach clubs, and one of the best is definitely Encanto Beach Club. It's perfect for hanging out during the day, sipping some cocktails, and enjoying the beach.
And lastly, let's talk food! For the best Birria tacos in town, you gotta go to Birria de la 30. It's a proper local hotspot, and once you've tried the food, you'll see why.
And if you're looking for a great breakfast spot, check out Capitan Sandwich, Que Huevor, Le P'tit Shoux Shoux or La Cueva del Chango. It's a cute outdoor restaurant with the best chilaquiles in town, and they also serve all kinds of international breakfast. Just make sure to arrive early – otherwise, you'll have to wait in line.
In the evening, get yourself to Tropical Tacos for the very best tacos, vegan, vegetarian, meat, you name it they have it all!
