Where to Stay in Pisa Italy: 4 Best Neighborhoods (+ Hotels in Pisa)

Pisa Cathedral and Leaning Tower of Pisa on a sunny day

Pisa, a charming city in Tuscany, is famous for its iconic Leaning Tower and is one of the most visited cities on the Italy tourist trek. Like most other visitors, I first visited Pisa on a day trip to see the Square of Miracles, and I didn't plan much time since I'd been told there wasn't much else to see. That was not the experience I had!

Instead, I found Pisa to be vibrant, charming, and lived-in. Outside of the famous strip of glistening white structures, the city has a youthful vibe, great vintage shopping spots, and romantic River Arno strolls.

While Florence is the obvious choice in Tuscany if you want to spend your evenings away from mass tourism, consider a 2-3 day stay in Pisa! It works well as a vacation hub, as it boasts a central location with Pisa Centrale Railway Station offering easy access to Florence, Lucca, and Cinque Terre.

With several fabulous neighborhoods to pick from, choosing where to stay in Pisa can be tricky. In this guide, I'll walk you through some of the best neighborhoods and help you find the perfect location for your stay in Pisa Italy!

Where to Stay in Pisa: Neighborhood Overview

Santa Maria (Centro Storico)

The historic center of Pisa, filled with famous landmarks, bustling streets, and vibrant piazzas, Santa Maria is renowned for housing the Piazza dei Miracoli (Square of Miracles) which includes The Leaning Tower of Pisa, Pisa Cathedrale, and San Giovanni Baptistery.

Sant'Antonio/San Martino

A quieter area south of the Arno River, Sant'Antonio and San Martino are two small neighborhoods that run together and share a similar vibe. This area offers a serene escape with its less touristy ambiance.

San Francesco

Palazzo Caravona in Pisa University

San Francesco is another culturally rich area known for its youthful vibe and historic university. Like Bologna and Padua, Pisa is one of the oldest university towns in Europe. Officially founded in 1343, Pisa University draws students from around the world who give the city a fresh, alternative vibe. As you would expect from a university neighborhood, San Francesco is filled with eclectic cafes, bookshops, and vibrant nightlife.

San Giusto

This neighborhood has a cool, laid-back vibe with plenty of local flavor. It's the best neighborhood for those who plan on using public transit to explore the surrounding area, as you'll be close to Pisa Centrale train station and Pisa International Airport.

1. Where to Stay in Pisa for First-Timers: Santa Maria

Staying in Central Pisa puts you right in the heart of the action. This area is home to all the tourist attractions, including the famous Leaning Tower, Pisa Cathedral, and the Baptistery.

Everything is within walking distance from the central train station, and some of the most highly-rated Pisa hotels are in this area. You have all the amenities at your fingertips. The Santa Maria district is bustling with tourists and locals alike and is ideal for those who wish to immerse themselves fully in the city's rich historical heritage.

Here are a few highlights of staying in this neighborhood:

  • Visit the incredible Baptistery and make sure to go upstairs for a phenomenal photo of the Cathedral from the window.

  • Don't miss the elaborate crypts and historical frescos at the Camposanto. In my opinion, this is one of the most beautiful and peaceful places in the city.

The Best Hotels in Santa Maria

When it comes to hotels in Pisa, you aren't starved for choice in the city's historic center. There's a little something for every kind of traveler, though this is the most expensive area as you probably have guessed.

Luxury Stay: Palazzo Feroci – Residenza d'epoca

bedroom Palazzo Feroci

There are no five-star hotels in Pisa proper, but there are some very nice stays, and Palazzo Feroci is one of the highest-rated. It's centrally located, just a six-minute walk from the Piazza dei Miracoli, and features several suite options as well as a penthouse apartment.

Rooms feature air conditioning, flat-screen TVs, soaking bathtubs, and a traditional Tuscan design theme. With large windows, lots of natural light, and rustic wooden touches, you'll feel entrenched in Italian charm.

Midrange Stay: Prato dei Miracoli Residenza d'Epoca

This boutique hotel has the best location on my list of favorite Pisa hotels. You have a full view of the iconic tower from your bedroom! The only other spot with views this good is the OG Grand Hotel Duomo from its rooftop terrace. It has a reputation, but the hotel itself is nominally rated and feels outdated.

In contrast, this relative newcomer is a modern hotel with a friendly staff, free Wi-Fi, walk-in showers, and spacious rooms. It's the best of both worlds and considering the view, it's very reasonably priced.

2. Where to Stay in Pisa for Slow Travelers: Sant'Antonio & San Martino

Buildings along the River Arno in Pisa Italy

Sant'Antonio is located south of the Arno River and offers a quieter alternative to the bustling Santa Maria. I like it for families, for longer stays, and for those who are using Pisa as a travel hub. Located near Pisa Central Station, it's perfect for travelers planning multiple-day trips to nearby destinations.

Despite being close to the train station, it's a residential area, and it provides ample green spaces and quiet nightly river walks. The neighborhood is also noted for its elegant architecture, funky street murals, and proximity to the bustling Corso Italia, one of Pisa's best shopping streets.

Here are a few of the best things to do in Sant'Antonio & San Martino:

  • Take a leisurely walk along the Arno River. On this side of the river, you get excellent views and less crowded walkways.

  • Visit the Church of Santa Maria della Spina, a Gothic gem from the 13th century.

  • Photograph the Keith Haring mural, “Tuttomondo” on the Sant'Antonio Abate Church. The gigantic mural lends a playful atmosphere to the neighborhood and makes the perfect backdrop for Instagram photos!

  • Visit the Palazzo Blu, a contemporary art and cultural center housed in an ancient blue palace.

  • Visit the beautiful San Martino Church

  • Pop into Libreria Ghibellina and grab a book for your nighttime stroll along the river.

  • Check out the stalls in the lively Mercato delle Vettovaglie for fresh local food. Here you can find fishmongers, breadmakers, wine shops, and traditional Pisan foods housed in a 16th-century square.

  • Museo della Grafica Palazzo Lanfranchi is a fun graphics museum that also features wall paintings from the Middle Ages.

  • Enjoy a picnic in Scotto Gardens. The 19th-century gardens sit inside the remains of a 15th-century Florentine-built fortress!

River Arno at night under street lights

San Francesco is a historic neighborhood known for its beautiful churches, the ancient university, and the best nightlife in Pisa. It's an excellent choice for those interested in exploring Pisa's rich history and enjoying a night on the town with the younger crowd.

The area from the river to Via S. Lorenzo, along Borgo Stretto, has the densest population of wine bars and nightclubs in the city. It's a lively area to explore and enjoy after the day trippers leave in the evening.

Here are a few of the best activities in the neighborhood:

  • Visit the Church of San Francesco, a stunning example of Gothic architecture with medieval tombs.

  • Attend a cultural event or concert at the Teatro Verdi. The theater is breathtaking and depending on what time of year you visit, you may be able to see opera, prose, family-friendly plays, or live music events.

  • Take a tour of Palazzo Medici on the river. The Lords of Florence lived in the structure during the 15th century, but it's now used as the seat of the Prefecture.

  • Wander the free university museum: Gipsoteca di Arte Antica dell’ Università di Pisa. It features an excellent collection of Greek, Roman, and Etruscan sculpture.

Best Hotel Picks in San Francesco

The hotels in San Francesco are more on par price-wise with Santa Maria, which makes sense, as the neighborhoods are adjacent to each other.

B&B Di Camilla is a luxury bed and breakfast and one of the best Pisa hotels in my opinion. The property offers a lush garden and an on-site bar. It boasts spacious rooms with sitting areas, walk-in showers, and bidets. There's also a coffee shop and handy bicycle rentals.

Airplane landing at Pisa Airport

As stated earlier, San Giusto is located near the train station and Pisa International Airport, making it a convenient option for travelers wanting to explore nearby cities or with early or late flights.

Despite its proximity to the airport, the neighborhood has a residential feel and offers several good hotel and dining options. Also, if you plan to visit Pisa by car, this area is your best bet for finding free and ample parking as well as car rental agencies.

This area is mostly residential, and there aren't a lot of attractions, but you should definitely enjoy a meal at Convento de “I Cappuccini”. The former monastery is now used for community events and features a lovely restaurant. There are also a few great pizzerias and gelato shops in the area.
