As Noumea is a French territory, its capital is an incredible blend of French culture and cuisine, along with stunning beaches and the crystal-clear waters of the South Pacific Ocean. You can start your day with a typical French breakfast and then go island hopping in the afternoon. How cool is that?

After visiting Noumea, I was blown away by what this city and its surroundings have to offer. You might be wondering where to stay in Noumea since it's not your everyday holiday location, but don't worry, I've got you covered with my favorite neighborhoods and hotels.

Best areas to stay in Noumea

Noumea's areas are all incredibly beautiful, so I've managed to narrow it down to my favorite four spots.

First up, Anse Vata is my personal go-to and a recommendation for all first-timers and families. It has a super chill beach vibe, with plenty of great restaurants and resorts to enjoy.

If you're a shopaholic or a foodie, you'll love the city center of Noumea, Centre Ville. Here, you'll find many boutiques, cafes, bars, and restaurants, each one better than the next.

For those who enjoy a drink in a bar and some seriously good seafood, Baie de Citrons is the ideal spot. There are many restaurants and bars right by the ocean, offering a fantastic vacay experience.

And finally, if you're a couple looking for a peaceful getaway close to everything, Baie de la Moselle is the place to be. It's just outside the city center, ensuring you'll have tranquility while still being near all the action.

1. Where to stay in Noumea for first-timers & families: Anse Vata

If you're a first-timer, I highly recommend staying in Anse Vata. It's a stunning beach area just south of Noumea's city center, and it totally captures that laid-back island vibe you're probably after.

The neighborhood itself is packed with adorable boutique shops, cozy cafes, delicious restaurants, and a bunch of incredible resorts and boutique hotels.

The white sand and crystal-clear waters make it perfect for lazy beach days, kayaking, snorkeling, and all kinds of water sports.

If you're on a family vacation, this place is an excellent choice too. It's just a short 10-minute drive from the city center, so you're not caught up in all the hustle and bustle, but still close enough to enjoy it all.

The waters here are super calm, and the area itself is pretty quiet, so even with the little ones, you're guaranteed to have an amazing time.

What's more, there are plenty of family-friendly resorts around, and it's a fantastic base for exploring the nearby islands if you're up for some island hopping.

Things to do in Anse Vata

Anse Vata is an absolute gem. You can simply spend your days soaking up the beautiful beaches and indulging in the amazing restaurants and bars right on the beach. My personal favorite spot is Le Roof, where you can enjoy a fantastic fine dining experience with mouthwatering seafood.

For a fun family activity, be sure to visit Aquarium des Lagons, an indoor aquarium located right in Anse Vata. They have a wide variety of fish, turtles, and even sharks! After that, you can hop over to the other side of the bay and hike up Ouen Toro Hill, which, in my opinion, offers the best viewpoint down here.

If you prefer experiencing all of this in the wild, you should definitely explore the islands around Noumea. From Anse Vata, it's incredibly easy to hop on a boat trip and visit nearby islands for some incredible snorkeling or simply relax on secluded beaches. Duck Island was definitely one of my personal favorites, especially for snorkeling.

A little further, there's Amédée Lighthouse, which makes for a great day trip you can book here.

I also liked visiting the Tjibaou Cultural Center, which is a 20-minute drive from Anse Vata. Enter this stunning architectural masterpiece designed by Renzo Piano, celebrating and preserving the rich Kanak culture and heritage.

I loved my stay at Le Méridien Noumea Resort & Spa, one of the best luxury hotels in Noumea. It is located right on the beach and offers breathtaking views of Anse Vata Bay. The resort features a beautiful outdoor pool and rooms with air conditioning and my balcony had stunning views over the ocean. On top of that, they have a bar right on the beach, which is amazing for grabbing a couple of drinks during sunset.

Chateau Royal Beach Resort & Spa is another fantastic option for luxury accommodation in Anse Vata. The DoubleTree by Hilton Noumea Ilot Maitre Resort is a luxurious beachfront hotel located on a turquoise lagoon with stunning garden and sea views, offering beach access, an outdoor pool with a poolside restaurant, and well-equipped bungalows. It's a convenient 30-minute boat ride from Noumea, but if you arrive on a flight outside of the boat schedule, you may need to spend a night in Nouméa due to limited maritime transfers during late night and early morning hours.

2. Where to stay in Noumea for shopping & foodies: Noumea Centre Ville (City Center)

If you like to explore the shops or consider yourself a foodie, then Noumea Centre Ville, the City Center, is the perfect place for you to stay in Noumea! This area offers a mix of local and international shops, as well as some of the best restaurants and cafes in the city.

Furthermore, the city center is the perfect spot to visit some of the city's museums, such as the Maritime Museum and the Noumea Museum.

In the city center, you'll also find the harbor and ferry port from where you can easily access some of the other islands. I highly recommend doing that while you're here!

Things to do in Centre Ville

The food scene here in Noumea is absolutely amazing, and the city center is packed with fantastic restaurants. It's a paradise for all you foodies out there! My absolute favorite spot here is Au P'tit Cafe, a charming little French café on the southern side of the city center. They serve the most incredible French goodies and have great coffee too.

If you're in the mood for something healthy, you should definitely check out Poke Bar Nouméa. They create yummy Smoothie as well as Poke Bowls, perfect for vegetarians or vegans.

One of my absolute favorite things to do was check out the local markets in Noumea. Port Moselle Market is hands down the coolest! While not the biggest at all, it has a great local vibe and is bursting with incredible produce. It's just perfect for some good old fruit shopping or simply watching the locals.

For any culture and history geeks, the Maritime Museum right near the harbor is definitely worth a visit! It's a fantastic place to delve into the history of Noumea and its deep connections to the ocean. Moreover, they have tons of incredibly interesting ship models on display. So, if you're coming with kids, it's a fun little activity to enjoy together.

And speaking of ships, you absolutely have to go island hopping and visit the nearby islands when you're here. The Isle of Pines near Noumea is an absolute must. It's a small island with a handful of hotels, perfect for a day trip from Noumea (or even better, stay there overnight if you have the time!).

The island has such a relaxing vibe, natural beauty, great snorkeling spots, and some cool hikes too. You can take a ferry from the Noumea ferry terminal, or if you prefer, you can even fly there as the island has its own little airport. Other islands like the Loyalty Islands are also worth exploring!

While there aren't many 5-star hotels in Noumea, Gondwana City Green is a fantastic option for luxury accommodation in the city center. It offers spacious rooms with beautiful views and air conditioning. Plus, it's within walking distance of all the main attractions in the city center.

3. Where to stay in Noumea for nightlife & beaches: Baie des Citrons (Lemon Bay)

Even closer to the city center than Anse Vata is the other popular beach neighborhood, Baie des Citrones simply known as Lemon Bay in English.

This area is loved by tourists and cherished by many locals. The beach here is absolutely stunning, with super calm waters, making it an ideal spot for sunbathing, swimming, scuba diving and snorkeling. 

But that's not all Lemon Bay is famous for – it's also known for its pretty good nightlife. The strip behind the beach is lined with cozy restaurants, lively bars, and even some nightclubs, so if you're up for some late nights while visiting Noumea, then this is definitely the place to stay!

Things to do in Baie des Citrons

When it comes to restaurants and nightlife, I've got a couple of favorites here that I think you'll love. For a delicious breakfast and coffee, make sure to check out Lemon Bay Cafe. They serve up a typical Aussie breakfast with eggs benedict with avocado on sourdough, and their flat white is absolutely amazing too.

If you're up for some late-night drinks and snacks, head over to MV Lounge at the far end of Lemon Bay. It's a super cute beachside bar where you can enjoy some tasty cocktails under the twinkling fairy lights.

Renting a car and exploring more of the main island, Grand Terre, is another activity that has to be on your radar. I recommend getting a 4WD and heading south from Noumea towards Prony Village to discover New Caledonia's wild side. You'll come across breathtaking waterfalls, scenic dirt roads, charming deserted villages, stunning lighthouses, and so much more. It's the perfect adventure if you're looking for some action during your beach bum vacation.

Especially coming from Australia, many people come to Noumea by cruise ship, which is a great way to do it. However, to fully explore Noumea and New Caledonia, I recommend flying from Australia to La Tontouta International Airport, which is about a 45-minute drive outside of Noumea. That way, you will have more time to explore and relax in this beautiful tropical city and explore the surroundings.

In all honesty, Noumea can be a bit on the pricey side. However, if you plan well and do some research beforehand, there are ways to save money while still having an amazing time. Look for budget-friendly accommodations and try out local restaurants rather than touristy ones. Also, consider visiting during the low season when prices tend to be lower.

The best part is that the climate in New Caledonia is pleasant all year round, with temperatures ranging in the 20s and 30s degrees Celsius. The peak season for most tourists is in December and January, as well as in July and August. During these times, hotels tend to be pricier and the city gets a bit more crowded. If you can, try to plan your trip outside of these months to score better deals on accommodation and avoid some of the crowds.
