Where to Stay In Broome: Best Places + Hotels (2024)

The small beach town of Broome in the north of Western Australia is a hidden gem loved by many, including myself, for its natural beauty and amazing wildlife. While it may be considered in the middle of nowhere, the 22-hour drive or 2-hour flight from Perth is totally worth it if you're looking to escape the hustle and bustle of big city life.

As an Australian resident, I've been lucky enough to visit Broome a few times, and let me tell you, it lives up to the hype! It's incredibly relaxing, and Cable Beach, their famous main beach, is definitely one of the best in Australia. Seeing the camels parade past at sunset is certainly an experience!

Don't worry, figuring out where to stay in Broome is fairly easy since the town is quite small. In this guide, I'll share my favorite areas and hotels to make it super easy for you to pick.

Best places to stay in Broome

Broome is a pretty small town, but it has a lot to offer. There are two main areas to consider, and I even added a third one for those seeking some extra seclusion.

If you're a first-timer, I recommend staying in Broome Center. It's super convenient to get to, and you'll have restaurants, bars, supermarkets and the Broome Visitor Centre right at your doorstep.

If you're a beach lover and want to dive into all the activities in the area, Broom's famous Cable Beach is the place to be.

And finally, if your idea of a perfect getaway involves ultimate relaxation, you might want to consider staying outside of Broome. There are a couple of great wildlife and eco-lodges scattered around Broome where you can properly unwind and relax.

1. Where to stay in Broome for the first time: Broome Center

Broome Town Centre has a rich pearl history, once boasting the biggest pearling port in the world. Nowadays, it's all about the town beach and its crystal-clear waters.

If you're here for the first time, staying in the city center is the way to go. You'll find most hotels in Broome located here, plus you'll be close to fantastic markets and shops.

The town has been developing more and more over the years and even has its own Chinatown, as well as plenty of good cafes and restaurants.

When it comes to booking hotels and resorts, I'd recommend doing it in advance as they tend to fill up quickly in Broome and there are not a lot of choices.

For a unique experience, head to Roebuck Bay for sunset and watch thousands of flying foxes take off at dusk.

For some great local beer, head to Matso's Brewery and try their famous ginger beer.

End your day with a movie at Sun Pictures, the oldest open-air cinema in the world. This is another of my favorite experiences while staying in Broome.

What many of you probably don't know is that Cable Beach isn't just the name of a beach; it's a whole neighborhood. It's famous for its warm Indian Ocean waters, white sand, and stunning red cliffs.

On top of that, there are some great restaurants and bars on Cable Beach Road. If you're into watersport activities, Cable Beach is the place to be! Snorkeling, fishing, surfing—you name it, they've got it.

And here's a cool tidbit: you can even drive on the beach! So, if you've got a 4WD, it's the perfect opportunity to have some fun on the sand before catching that beautiful sunset.

If you're looking for something different, there are some awesome options around Broome too. As I mentioned before, Broome is far from the nearest big city (Perth), but that's what makes it so special. It's surrounded by peaceful scenery and exciting wildlife.

The surroundings of Broome are pretty remote, but that's where you'll find some amazing eco-lodges and wildlife retreats, perfect for bird watching and relaxing.

For these options, I definitely recommend having a car, preferably a 4WD, as some of the properties are only accessible by dirt roads.

FYI: There are also quite a few fantastic caravan parks and free campsites around Broome that are definitely worth checking out in case you're planning on camping.

Things to do outside of Broome

One of the absolute must-do activities outside of Broome is a day trip to the incredible Horizontal Falls. These natural wonders are absolutely stunning and can only be reached by plane or boat. If you prefer, you can even go for a scenic flight over the falls.

When it comes to relaxation, you're in luck! There are a couple of options for eco-lodges and wildlife retreats that offer a peaceful and secluded stay surrounded by nature. Some of these places are super luxurious, making them perfect for couples or anyone in need of some serious relaxation.

Another popular activity is taking a catamaran day trip to explore the breathtaking surrounding waters of Broome. Whether you're into fishing, snorkeling, or just want to kick back and enjoy the stunning sunset, it's definitely one of my top recommendations.
