Ayutthaya, the historic city of Thailand and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is like Bagan in Myanmar and Angkor Wat in Cambodia.

For most tourists, Ayutthaya is just a day trip from Bangkok. But I think it's definitely worth spending a little more time here. It's home to many ancient temples and ruins that you'll want to explore for more than just a day.

Over the last few years, the city has become more developed. Now, you can find plenty of nice riverside hotels, delicious restaurants, and other great things to do. Ayutthaya is definitely worth spending some time in.

I personally loved Ayutthaya and its relaxing atmosphere, as well as its cultural and historical sites, during my recent visit. That's why I want to answer all questions on where to stay in Ayutthaya.

Best areas to stay in Ayutthaya, Thailand

Inside the Historical Center

The beating heart of Ayutthaya is the Historical Center, an island surrounded by the Chao Phraya River. Here, you'll discover the city center, a perfect choice for first-time visitors, offering plenty of hotels and a convenient location for sightseeing and exploration.

Additionally, the Riverside area, also centrally located, is the better pick if you're looking for a more upscale hotel experience.

Outside the Historical Center

Outside of the Historical Center, you'll discover many other fantastic districts, most of which have a more relaxed and authentic vibe. Eastern Ayutthaya is perfect for families or those who are staying for a short amount of time, as it is located right by the train station.

Northern Ayutthaya, on the other hand, is a hidden gem, offering an opportunity to mingle with locals and explore the more rural parts of the town.

Lastly, Western Ayutthaya is the perfect escape from the crowds with beautiful green nature and relaxing retreat hotels.

1. Where to stay in Ayutthaya for the first time: The Historical City Center

If you're looking for a fantastic base for your first visit to Ayutthaya, with easy access to the Ayutthaya Historical Park and other tourist attractions, staying in the City Center is the way to go.

It's surrounded by the beautiful Chao Phraya River and is home to numerous historical and religious landmarks in Ayutthaya, such as the Ayutthaya Historical Park and the holy temple of Wat Phra Si Sanphet.

And of course, being in the city center, you'll find some of the most popular hotels and restaurants. While it might be slightly more expensive than other areas, it's definitely worth it if you want to be close to everything.

Things to see & do in The City Center

The major highlight here is definitely the Ayutthaya Historical Park, which is home to numerous temples and religious sites.

It's an absolute must-visit when you come here, and in fact, it might be the main reason why you're here in the first place! The Historical Park features temples like Wat Phra Mahathat, Wat Yai Chai Mongkol, and Wat Phra Si Sanphet.

Exploring the Historical Park on foot is super easy, but I still suggest starting your journey at the Ayutthaya Historical Park Office. There, you can grab a map and get more information about the temples.

Luang Chumni Village is a charming traditional-style guest house located right in the heart of the city. The rooms feature a delightful wooden decor, are equipped with air conditioning, and some even offer a lovely balcony with garden views.

One of my top picks for a mid-range option near the Ayutthaya Historical Park is Niwas Ayutthaya. They have cozy bungalows with lovely terraces and air conditioning, surrounded by a lush garden.

If you're looking to save some money, Room Story Hostel is an excellent option. Located just a few hundred meters from the Historical Park, this modern budget hostel features air-conditioned double rooms, as well as dorm-style rooms.

2. Where to stay in Ayutthaya for couples & luxury: Riverside

The Riverside area is actually located within the Ayutthaya Historical Park Island (City Center), so it's located very close to all the tourist attractions. 

But what's really awesome about this place is that it's where you'll find some of the absolute best cafes, bars, and luxury hotels. Trust me, staying here was such a delight!

The lakeside hotels and resorts have an incredible design that makes you forget you're in the hustle and bustle of the city center. 

It's perfect if you want to treat yourself and enjoy some much-needed seclusion while still exploring all the amazing temples and historical sites nearby.

Things to see & do in Riverside

When you're staying here, visiting the historical park is a must. But let me tell you, some of my absolute favorite food spots are also in this area. For the best roti in town, head over to Roti Sai Mai.

If you're craving a delicious cup of coffee, Trifecta Cafe is the place to be. They have a really nice seating area and great Wi-Fi, perfect to hang out or get some work done.

And if you're in the mood for some amazing noodles, you should visit Crying Tiger Boat Noodles!

FYI: Most of the Riverside accommodations here come with terraces and decks right by the river. They're perfect for enjoying a cold drink while watching the sunset.

Sala Ayutthaya is one of the best hotels in the area, with luxurious rooms and suites, each featuring a super cozy bed, an LCD TV, and air conditioning. Sala Ayutthaya is located right by the river and has its own outdoor swimming pool and massage services.

Baan Pomphet is a fantastic luxury hotel located near the heart of the city. The rooms are spacious, complete with air conditioners, desks, and small balconies. On top of that, the hotel has a beautiful design, with some rooms having direct access to the outdoor swimming pool.

The most affordable of the riverside hotels is Baan Keang Chon Ayutthaya. And when I say affordable, I don't mean it's basic. It's actually a modernly designed lake house with spacious rooms, comfortable common areas, and a sun terrace right by the beautiful Chao Phraya River.

3. Where to stay in Ayutthaya for families & good accessibility: Eastern Ayutthaya (District 8)

The eastern parts of Ayutthaya of Phra Nakhon Si, particularly the District 8 area, are fantastic for families who want to be near the city center and historical landmarks.

Although it's outside of the Historical Park Island, you'll still find plenty of hotels, food options, and markets in the area.

What's even better is that the Ayutthaya train station is located here, too, making it hassle-free to arrive and quickly head to your hotel to drop off all your luggage. It's also a great place to stay if you're short on time or just visiting for the day.

Things to see & do in Eastern Ayutthaya

One of the really cool historical sites that are not part of the Ayutthaya Historical Park is Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon.

It's just a little outside the city center, which makes it less touristy but still a fantastic addition to the more popular temples in Ayutthaya.

If you're up for some shopping or even just a leisurely stroll, I highly recommend checking out the Ayutthaya Floating Market. It's a charming little spot where you can buy souvenirs and get a glimpse of local life.

Kantary Hotel Ayutthaya is an awesome mid-range choice in District 8! The rooms are equipped with air conditioning and a flat-screen TV. While Kantary Hotel Ayutthaya is a bit further away from the river, it's super affordable and even offers a sauna and steam room.

4. Where to stay in Ayutthaya for an authentic experience: Northern Ayutthaya (District 6)

The area north of the historical center may not be as popular with tourists, but it's definitely worth a visit, especially if you want to experience the local and rural life in Ayutthaya.

Here, everything is much quieter with fewer crowds, but you'll still find a variety of hotels, homestays, and restaurants. 

However, you're still within walking distance of the busier parts of town if you feel like joining the action.

If you haven't had your fill of historical ruins yet, there are many others scattered throughout the northern area. Don't miss out on Wat Khok Phraya and Wat Choeng Tha, they're definitely worth a visit while you're here.

For an amazing fine dining experience, I highly recommend Busaba Ayutthaya. Their Michelin star chef serves up traditional dishes with a modern twist that is simply to die for. It might be a bit on the expensive side, but if you're up for it, it's definitely a must-visit for all foodies.

This peaceful riverside village is just outside the center of Ayutthaya, but it feels like a different world entirely. 

You'll find only a few hotels and homestays here that offer complete relaxation, surrounded by lush gardens, ponds, and palm trees. Staying in this area is definitely more like a retreat, ideal if you want to escape the craziness of Bangkok for a couple of days.

Staying in the western parts of Ayutthaya is an amazing opportunity to relax in your cozy homestay, enjoy some delicious local food, and take a break from exploring Thailand and Ayutthaya. 

However, it can also be a fantastic chance to rent a scooter and venture into the outskirts of the region.

Don't worry about traffic – there's hardly any, making it perfect for those who aren't super confident on a scooter. You'll be surrounded by picturesque rice fields and charming villages, creating a truly delightful experience as you cruise around, explore, and try loads of different snacks along the way.
