When you visit South Korea, you'll definitely want to check out Seoul, an incredibly modern capital city of South Korea.

When you think of Seoul, the first thing that probably comes to mind is the sight of massive skyscrapers, neon lights everywhere, and K-pop blasting from every speaker. Well, that might be true, but Seoul also has another side to it. This amazing city, with a population of over 10 million, manages to strike the perfect balance between modernity and tradition.

You'll find traditional art galleries and tea houses right next to skyscrapers, along with street food on every corner.

When you visit a city as big as this, it naturally brings up the question of where to stay. I've been to Seoul, and I'd love to share with you my favorite districts and hotels to make your decision easier. Let me help you choose where to stay in Seoul.

Best areas to stay in Seoul

North Seoul

The northern part is awesome for your stay in Seoul if you're here for the first time, on a budget, or want to try all the amazing street food the city has to offer. My favorite districts here are Myeongdong, Hongdae, Insadong, and Itaewon.

South Seoul

If you're looking for entertainment, I'd suggest staying south of the Han River, which divides Seoul. You'll find the vibrant nightlife district of Gangnam and the district of Jamsil, where you can enjoy amusement parks and shopping

1. Where to stay in Seoul for the first time & shopping: Myeongdong

If it's your first time, I recommend checking out a district that totally screams “South Korea” – and in my opinion, that's Myeongdong.

Myeongdong is a mix of sights, flavors, and experiences! It's one of Seoul's busiest neighborhoods and has just about everything you can imagine. 

Music blares from every store, you'll find street food on every corner, and tall skyscrapers loom overhead. It can be overwhelming for first-timers with so much going on, but it's the best spot to experience the real Seoul.

FYI: It's conveniently located near Seoul Station, which is super handy!

Things to see & do in Myeongdong

If you're a shopaholic or a foodie, you're going to absolutely love Myeongdong! When it comes to shopping malls, Lotte Department Store and Noon Square are both fantastic choices where you can find expensive designer boutiques but also little souvenir shops.

Here you'll find street food all over the place, especially after 4 pm when the hawkers come out and the whole city smells like delicious treats.

If you're into sit-down spots, make sure to check out Myeongdong Kyoja Main Store. This tiny traditional joint only has four items on the menu, but boy, do they pack a punch!

Lotte City Hotel Myeongdong is an awesome choice and one of the best luxury hotels in South Korea. You'll find spacious rooms with cozy beds, and a well-equipped gym, and it's located within walking distance of the Myeongdong Shopping Street.

Hotel Skypark is a great mid-range option in Myeongdong. It's located right next to the metro station, so you can easily explore Seoul and get around town with ease. You'll find modern rooms, friendly staff, and amazing views of the city.

If you're on a tighter budget, Hotel 8 Hours is the perfect place for you. It's a small hotel with basic rooms, but it's clean and comfortable. Plus, it is in a central location and within walking distance of most tourist attractions in the area.

2. Where to stay in Seoul for vibrant nightlife & luxury: Gangnam

Nowadays, everyone knows Gangnam. The famous song “Gangnam Style” made it popular, but it wasn't always like this.

The name Gangnam translates to “South of the River” and it used to be a fairly humble district. However, thanks to the 1988 Olympics, money started flowing into the area, leading to its remarkable development over time.

Today, Gangnam is where most rich people of Seoul live. You'll discover tons of skyscrapers, awesome restaurants and bars, and vibrant nightlife here, making it one of my favorite districts.

Things to see & do in Gangnam

Going out at night is always fun in Gangnam. Stroll down the neon-lit streets, and you'll find some of the hottest clubs and bars in town.

Goose Island Brewhouse is a great place to kick off the night! They serve amazing local draft beer and hearty food that will hit the spot. And if you're looking for something a bit more sophisticated, you've got to check out Le Chamber. It's a cozy little speakeasy where you can sip on high-quality spirits and enjoy expertly crafted cocktails.

3. Where to stay in Seoul on a budget & for the best street food: Hongdae

Hongdae is the place to be, thanks to Hongik University (Art school)! You'll find the whole area buzzing with students and artists, creating a super chill and friendly vibe.

It's one of the most popular areas among budget travelers and young backpackers as well. Here you'll find delicious street food, souvenir shops and plenty of tea houses. 

Hongdae is also home to a great art and culture scene and you will find many art galleries, jazz clubs, and live music venues.

Things to see & do in Hongdae

I suggest you take some time strolling around in Hongdae neighborhood, especially on Hongdae Mural Street.

You'll see murals by local artists all around, and when the sun goes down, there are plenty of street food options, cozy bars, and live music. It's the perfect area to start the night or just come and hang out while enjoying a drink.

If you're looking for a place to go earlier in the day, then you've got to check out my favorite lunch spot: Thank Nature Cafe! They serve amazing French toast and barista-made coffee, plus they have two adorable sheep living right in the cafe. Yes, actual sheep!

Amanti Hotel Seoul is a luxurious choice in the heart of Hongdae. You'll find spacious rooms with modern decor, a swimming pool, and an on-site spa. Plus, it's close to all the tourist attractions and you can easily get around town using the metro station nearby.

4. Where to stay in Seoul for culture & art: Insadong

Insadong is the beating heart of Seoul, nestled in the north of the Han River. It's a delightful mix of historical palaces, serene Buddhist temples, charming traditional Hanok houses, intriguing antique stores, cozy boutique accommodations, trendy restaurants, and inviting cafes.

The best part about Insadong is its main street, Insadong-gil, or Insadong Traditional Culture Street. It's conveniently located near Anguk Station and stretches for 700m from Tapgol Park to Anguk-dong Rotary. It's a must-visit for anyone looking to soak in the rich cultural vibes!

Things to see & do in Insadong

Visit the many temples, including Cheondogyo Central Temple and Jogyesa, a traditional Buddhist monument.

Stop by Tapgol Park to admire the cherry blossom trees when in season and relax in the shade. Or visit Bukchon Hanok Village, a beautifully preserved area full of traditional Korean homes.

5. Where to stay in Seoul for couples: Itaewon

If you're looking for a slightly quieter place, Itaewon is perfect for you and your other half. And when I say quieter, I mean quieter for Seoul, because it's still pretty busy here.

The area is actually one of the most international neighborhoods in Seoul, with many foreigners living here. That also means you'll find plenty of amazing local and international restaurants and bars here! Itaewon is also home to some of Seoul's most famous landmarks, like the iconic N Seoul Tower and the beautiful Seoul Central Mosque. 

Even if you decide not to stay for the entire trip, I would definitely recommend planning a few nights here!

Things to see & do in Itaewon

If you're in Itaewon, don't miss out on N Seoul Tower. Perched atop Mt Namsan, N Seoul Tower offers amazing views of Seoul and its region. You have the option to take the cable car or hike up, but keep in mind that the hike can be a bit time-consuming. Personally, I'd go for the cable car.

6. Where to stay in Seoul for families & Lotte World: Jamsil

Situated in the southeastern part of Seoul, this place has got it all when it comes to entertainment. You've got Lotte World, a massive amusement park, and the stunning Olympic Park.

Jamsil is an awesome choice for families and anyone into sports and outdoor activities. I absolutely loved Lotte World because it's so unique compared to amusement parks back home. I highly recommend spending a day here if you have the time!

Things to see & do in Jamsil

Lotte World is definitely the highlight of the area and maybe even the only reason why I'd come here. Well, it's definitely worth seeing and you should make sure to set aside at least one day for this massive amusement park. 

The theme park boasts over 40 rides, an outdoor lake with boats, and hundreds of shopping and dining options making it ideal for kids and the whole family.

($$$) Signiel Seoul

Signiel Seoul is the perfect place to stay if you're looking for top-notch luxury and comfort. Situated in the heart of Jamsil, this 5-star hotel offers amazing views of the city and is also super close to the subway station.

Absolutely not, you do not need a car in Seoul. The city is well connected with an extensive subway system that covers most of the city and its attractions. Driving here is rather a hassle and you will sit in traffic a lot.

📅 How many days should I stay in Seoul?

I would recommend staying in Seoul for at least 3 to 5 days. If you're planning to visit all major attractions around central Seoul or even take day trips outside of the city, then I'd suggest planning for more than a week.
