Renting a scooter in Bali is the ultimate way to gain your freedom, explore the island like a local, and just stop at any place you see along the way and do whatever you feel like doing. I absolutely love riding a scooter in Bali, it's part of the Bali way of life!

But before you hop on that scooter, there are a few things you need to keep in mind to ensure you have a fantastic time and no regrets.

Having spent a lot of time in Bali myself, I've put together my ultimate guide on renting a scooter in Bali just for you.

From A to Z, I'll cover everything you need to know, including my favorite rental companies, insurance, and all sorts of tips and tricks.

Why rent a scooter in Bali?

Let's start by talking about why renting a scooter in Bali is super popular among tourists.

First off, it's incredibly convenient. Bali is a big island with tons of amazing spots to explore, so having your own wheels is a must. Otherwise, you'll be relying on private drivers or Gojek, which of course is completely fine too but slightly less flexible.

Plus, with the island getting more crowded these days, having a scooter to zip through traffic is a total game-changer.

Secondly, scooters are the most budget-friendly way to get around Bali. Taxis and private drivers can really add up, especially if you're planning to visit multiple places in a day. But with a scooter, you're in complete control of your itinerary and wallet. No more waiting around for a Gojek or Grab either!

And lastly, my absolute favorite reason: the thrill of adventure and freedom. Riding a scooter through Bali is an absolute blast and an unforgettable experience.

Cruising through local villages and catching those magical beach sunsets is reason enough to hop on a scooter. Furthermore, with Indonesia being one of the most affordable travel destinations in the world, renting a scooter is just another way to make your trip even more wallet-friendly.

Essential tips for renting a scooter in Bali

Now let's dive into the most exciting part, the reason you're probably reading this for.

Here are all the things you need to know when renting a scooter, along with some handy tips and tricks for an amazing two-wheeled experience in Bali.

Document and licenses you need to rent a scooter in Bali

If you're planning to rent a scooter in Bali, it's important to have a valid driver's license from your home country. You can either get an international driver's license or an international driving permit with a motorcycle endorsement.

Don't worry if you don't have an international driver's permit – you might be able to get one through your home country's automobile association or motor vehicle department. Just make sure to check with your local authorities before your trip, as not all countries issue international licenses.

It's worth noting that driving without a valid license in Bali can lead to fines and legal consequences. So, it's really important to have your license sorted out if you want to ride a scooter or any other vehicle.

While you might think it doesn't matter because you're “just” in Bali, the police here can be quite strict. It's best to avoid any issues and make sure you have your international license.

By the way, I should mention that Indonesia is a country with lower economic indicators and much lower incomes, and sometimes policemen might try to get money from you for various reasons. Having a valid international driving license can help you avoid giving them another reason to reach into your wallet.

Understand the local rules and regulations in Bali

It's super important to understand and follow the local rules and regulations when driving in a foreign country, and Bali is no exception. Seriously, following these rules will save you so much hassle.

It'll keep you safe too because trust me, you don't want to be one of those people who has to cut their vacation short because of a scooter incident or end up paying fines.

So here are some of the most important things you gotta keep in mind when you rent a scooter in Bali:

  • Drive on the left side of the road: In Bali, just like in other parts of Indonesia, traffic drives on the left side of the road. If you're not used to it, take your time and be careful until you get the hang of it. You can even take some lessons, and I'll go into more detail about that later.

  • Wear a helmet always: You gotta wear a helmet while driving a scooter in Bali, it's mandatory. Not only for your own safety but also because the police will fine you if they catch you without one.

  • Keep your license handy: Always make sure to carry your license with you when driving. If you get stopped by the police, they'll ask to see it. It's best to keep personal belongings in the compartment underneath your seat and not around your body to avoid purse snatching.

  • Be aware of traffic laws: Just like anywhere else, there are specific traffic laws in Bali that you need to follow. This includes stuff like not texting while driving and obeying traffic signals. I know, the locals often ignore it, but you're a guest in this country.

If you do happen to get pulled over by the police for any reason, try to stay calm and be polite. They might ask to see your license, vehicle registration, and insurance papers.

If you've got all those in order, you should be good. And if you run into any issues or fines, it's often best to handle them through the rental company (hence why it's important to choose a good one!) rather than dealing with them on your own.

Choose a reliable scooter rental agency in Bali

Choosing a reliable agency is probably one of the most important steps in renting scooters in Bali. You want to make sure you're getting a safe and well-maintained vehicle, along with good customer service and reasonable pricing.

That's why I recommend Bikago Rental as my go-to scooter rental company – they tick all the boxes for me and I hired a beautiful red Vespa on my most recent Bali trip through them.

First of all, their scooters are all pretty new or well-maintained and come with insurance, so you don't have to worry about any hidden costs when you suddenly break down in the middle of the road and have to be wheeled to a mechanic.

What's even better is that they will deliver the scooter to your hotel and pick it up for free if you rent it for more than 3 days.

They also offer a bunch of other convenient extras like first aid kits, surf racks, and even eSIM cards, which I highly recommend when traveling around Bali on a scooter. Not only for directions but for your own safety. And, of course, all scooter rentals include helmets!

But what really sets them apart from other rental agencies is their amazing customer service and wide availability. With over nine different stores all over Bali, you can easily find a location near your hotel or villa. I rented mine from Canggu.

And if you ever encounter any issues with your scooter, they are quick to respond on Whatsapp and help you out.

I've only had amazing experiences with Bikago Rental, and I highly recommend them for your scooter rental needs in Bali. It's worth the peace of mind knowing you're renting from a reliable agency. It's one of my favorite scooter rental companies in Bali!

How to choose the right scooter for your needs

Now that you know where to rent from, let's find the perfect scooter that suits your needs.

Not all scooters are the same (obviously), especially when a rental shop offers proper motorbikes too.

So, it's important to know what type of scooter you need, especially if you're a beginner driver.

Here are some factors to consider to rent scooters:

  • Engine size: If you're experienced or planning long distances, a scooter with a larger engine (150cc and above) might be more suitable. If you're new to riding or just using it for short trips, a smaller engine will do just fine and be safer for you too.

  • Automatic vs Manual: Most scooters in Bali, especially the ones with smaller engines, are automatic, which makes them very easy to ride. However, if you're confident with manual scooters and want a bigger engine, you'll have more options to choose from.

  • Seating capacity: If you're riding with a friend or planning to carry baggage across the island, make sure the scooter is suitable for two people or can accommodate enough luggage. Most scooters are suitable for two people, but there are some exceptions, so keep that in mind.

  • Condition and features: Don't hesitate to inspect the scooter before renting it. Check that everything is in working order, including the headlight, indicators, brakes, and horn. I usually like making a short video on my phone to record any scratches or anything different from the usual, this way you'll have proof in case things go sour.

Remember these factors and choose the scooter that feels right for you. And always wear a helmet and drive safely!

What are the different types of scooters?

If you're planning to explore Bali, you'll find a wide range of scooter options to rent. Each scooter has its unique features and capabilities, catering to both beginners and advanced riders.

Here are some popular choices you'll come across:

  • Honda Scoopy: Perfect for retro enthusiasts, the Honda Scoopy offers easy handling and a 110cc engine. It's great if you just want to cruise around Canggu, head to yoga, or go to the beach.

  • Honda Vario: For a bit more power, check out the Honda Vario. With its 125cc engine, it can comfortably accommodate two people. Plus, it comes equipped with modern features like LED headlights and digital displays.

  • Yamaha NMax: If you need a scooter for longer rides and heavier loads, you could go for a Yamaha NMax with its 155cc engine. Those are usually pretty modern and the perfect spacious scooter for two people and longer distances.

  • Vespa: If you're into classic Italian style, the Vespa is the way to go. With engine sizes ranging from 50cc to 300cc, you can choose one that suits your trip length and style. I loved riding my red Vespa around Canggu and all the way up to the waterfalls around Ubud.

  • Motorbikes: If you're an experienced rider and looking for more power, consider renting a proper motorbike rental like the Honda CRF or Yamaha XSR. Just ensure you have the necessary and valid motorbike license and experience before going for these.

Check the condition of the scooter

Another important step when renting a scooter is to carefully check its condition before hitting the road. Just like mentioned earlier, make sure all the features are in working order and take a good look for any visible damages or scratches.

It's always a good idea to take a video of the current condition of the scooter during handover. This way, if there are any issues or disputes later on, you'll have proof of the scooter's condition beforehand.

Don't forget to take note of any existing damages or scratches in the rental agreement before signing it. If there are any discrepancies, don't hesitate to bring it up with the rental agency. It's always better to be safe than sorry!

One more thing, from my experience, if something happens to the scooter like it falls over or worse, and you get some scratches, just be open about it. You have insurance with Bikago, so there's not too much to worry about. It's better to be honest than to try to hide it and get away with it.

So remember, always inspect and document the condition of the scooter before hitting the road.

Is scooter insurance worth it?

Let's talk about insurance, shall we? Is it really worth getting insurance for your scooter rental in Bali?

Well, it depends… Fact is, accidents happen frequently, and it's better to be prepared and have peace of mind rather than deal with unexpected expenses later.

Not all but some rental agencies in Bali include basic insurance in the rental price, but it's important to check what exactly the insurance covers. Some may only cover damages to the scooter, while more rarely others include coverage for medical expenses in case of an accident. Sometimes, you might also find that rental insurance is included in your travel insurance or attached to your credit card.

However, it's essential to note that most insurance policies have a deductible or excess fee that you'll have to pay in case of any damages. This can range from a few hundred thousand rupiahs up to the full cost of the damage, depending on the rental agency.

On the other hand, some rental agencies may offer additional insurance options that waive or reduce the excess fee in case of an accident, but this will come at an extra cost. It's up to you to weigh the pros and cons and decide if it's worth getting additional insurance.

The streets of Bali are not bad, but keep an eye out on potholes and animals.

One reason why I'm a big fan of Bikago is because they offer unlimited insurance at their rental price. That means you won't have to worry about any excess fees or unexpected costs in case of an accident.

With their ultimate insurance package, your excess fee is just USD 95, and you're protected against all damage and theft of the rented scooter. What this doesn't include is third-party liability or healthcare costs, that's why I cannot stress enough to get travel medical insurance!

In my opinion, having basic insurance is definitely worth it for the peace of mind, especially when you're riding in a foreign country as a solo traveler. But if you're an experienced rider and confident in your abilities, you may choose to skip additional insurance.

Ultimately, it's important to be responsible and follow traffic rules while riding a scooter in Bali. This will greatly reduce the chances of any accidents or damages occurring in the first place. But hey, it's always better to be prepared and have insurance, just in case, because you could be an amazing driver but someone else just doesn't have their scooter under control.

There are loads of stories and videos circling on socials where people simply get caught pulling the gas handle of the scooter without being able to stop. So dangerous for the people around them!

Costs of renting a scooter in Bali

Let's talk about the costs of renting a scooter in Bali. The good news is that Bali scooter rentals are quite affordable. It's always good to have an idea of the expenses that are involved in driving scooters, so you can plan your budget accordingly.

The cost of renting a scooter in Bali can vary depending on the rental agency and the type of scooter you choose. On average, a basic scooter with an engine size of 110cc will cost around USD 5-8 per day or USD 190 for a month-long rental. Popular models in this category are the Honda Scoopy and Honda Vario.

My Vespa with Bikago cost me just about USD 15 per day.

For those who prefer more power and speed, you can expect to pay around USD 10-15 per day or USD 250+ for a monthly rental for scooters with larger engines (150cc and above). The Yamaha NMax and Honda PCX are two popular options in this category.

Fuel costs in Bali are relatively inexpensive, with a liter of petrol costing around IDR 10,000 or USD 0.70. This is enough to cover long-distance trips around the island, making it a budget-friendly choice for transportation.

Keep in mind that there are potential fines that you may have to pay while riding a scooter in Bali. These include fines for not wearing a helmet (around USD 10), not having a valid license (USD 15-20), and if you park somewhere where there is absolutely no parking allowed, they might even tow your scooter and you'll have to pay around USD 150 to get it back.

Remember to follow traffic rules and regulations to avoid any fines, as they can add up and affect your overall vacation budget.

Safety tips for renting a scooter in Bali

When renting a scooter in Bali, it's super important to prioritize your safety.

Riding a scooter may seem easy, but it does require some practice and caution, especially if you're not used to it.

  1. For total beginners, I highly recommend taking a few lessons before hitting the road. There are many rental agencies in Bali that offer affordable scooter lessons for tourists. This will not only give you the necessary skills but also boost your confidence while riding. One of my top recommendations is Canggu Scooter Lessons. Their scooter lessons for beginners will cost you around USD 25 for 2 hours, and if you're interested in learning how to ride a motorbike, it will be around USD 30.

  2. Remember to always wear a helmet and protective gear. Helmets are mandatory in Bali, so it's important to pick or invest in a good quality one for your safety. Most scooter rentals will provide one or two helmets, but if you plan on staying long-term in Bali, I definitely recommend getting your own that fits properly.

  3. Take some time to familiarize yourself with the traffic rules and signs in Bali. The roads may seem chaotic at first, but once you understand the flow of traffic, it'll become easier to navigate.

  4. When on the road, keep a safe distance from other vehicles and be mindful of unexpected obstacles like potholes or animals. Yes, animals! Especially in Bali, you'll encounter different animals running around, from stray dogs to monkeys and cows.

  5. It's a good idea to keep some small bills with you in case you get fined by the police. Trust me, it can happen sometimes for no reason, so having smaller notes in a separate bag or pocket can come in handy.

  6. If you're considering staying long-term in Bali and maybe even buying your own scooter one day, I highly recommend getting your Balinese driving license. It may cost around USD 100, but it'll make your life much easier once you have your own scooter.

  7. When choosing where to start learning to drive, think about places like Ubud or other quieter areas inland. Seminyak and Canggu can be quite busy, so for beginners, it might be a challenge.

  8. Last but not least, never drink and drive. It's not only illegal but also extremely dangerous. If you plan on consuming alcohol, leave the scooter at your accommodation and opt for a taxi or ride-sharing service instead.

  9. It's best not to drive alone in remote areas. If you plan on exploring such places, I highly recommend having a buddy with you. From scooter mishaps to getting stuck in the mud, it's always good to have someone by your side.

  10. Make sure you know where to refill your petrol tank! If you're heading out on a long trip, do some research beforehand and find out where you can top up. Petrol stations may be scarce in Bali, but luckily many locals sell petrol by the roadside. So, keep an eye out for blue or green glass bottles stacked along the road – that's your chance to fill up your tank!

By following these safety tips, you can enjoy a smooth and hassle-free experience while renting a scooter in Bali. Remember, safety always comes first!

My favorite Bali road trips to take with your scooter

Riding a scooter in Bali is not just about getting from point A to point B. It's also about the incredible experience of exploring the island on two wheels.

Here are some of my favorite scooter trips in Bali that I highly recommend:

  1. The scenic coastal route from Kuta to Uluwatu is an absolute must-do for every scooter rider. You'll be treated to stunning beaches, breathtaking cliffs, and charming local villages along the way. This route will take you to the famous Uluwatu Temple and Uluwatu Beach, where you can find awesome beach clubs, restaurants, and cafes, and even catch some epic waves.

  2. If you're looking for a more cultural experience, hop on your scooter and ride up to Ubud from Canggu or vice versa. Ubud is a small town known for its vibrant art and culture scene, and it has a super laid-back hippie vibe. Surrounded by lush green rice fields, it's truly a sight to behold. And don't forget to visit the famous Monkey Forest while you're there, where you can meet some cheeky yet adorable wild monkeys.

  3. If you're up for a real adventure, a trip to the north of Bali is a must. Head up to Lovina, where you can go dolphin watching, and then continue your journey to Munduk for some jaw-dropping waterfalls and breathtaking mountain views. It's a paradise for nature lovers and thrill-seekers alike!

  4. If you're a beach bum like me, you'll love the ride from Canggu to Tanah Lot temple. Tanah Lot is a beautiful temple perched on a rock formation in the ocean, and it's best experienced during sunset. Along the way, you'll come across some beautiful beaches like Seseh Beach.

Renting a Scooter in Bali – Final Words

Not only is it budget-friendly, but it also gives you the freedom to explore every nook and corner of this beautiful island. Just make sure you're prepared and have all the necessary documents, insurance, international driver's permit and safety precautions in place.

Even if you're not the most confident driver, Bali is the perfect spot to learn. Take some lessons and build up your confidence on two wheels.
