Best eSIM for Greece (Tested in Athens & the Greek Islands)

Greece had been on my bucket list for years and last summer I finally got to explore it properly as part of our round-the-world honeymoon.
We island-hopped across the Cyclades, spending time in Paros, Santorini and Athens, travelling between islands by ferry and exploring by car once we arrived. It was hands down one of the best Euro summer trips I’ve taken and I truly cannot wait to go back and explore more islands!
But between navigating ferry ports, driving around islands using Google Maps, uploading Instagram content and answering the occasional email, I needed mobile data that actually worked. And after years of dealing with frustrating physical SIM cards while travelling, I’ve become a huge fan of eSIMs.
The biggest advantage? Simply install before even arriving in Europe, so when we landed, I already had signal and didn’t need to search for a phone shop at the airport at close to midnight.
If you’re planning a trip to Greece, here’s exactly which eSIMs I recommend based on my experience travelling across the Greek islands.

My Experience Staying Connected in Greece

During our trip, we travelled to Santorini → Paros → Athens, moving between islands by ferry and exploring each destination for up to a week each.
Because I create travel content for a living, having reliable data was essential. I used my phone for:
- Google Maps while driving around Paros
- Uploading Instagram content
- Messaging hotels and ferry operators
- Occasionally hotspotting my laptop for some emails
I installed my eSIM before we arrived in Europe (our first destination was actually London) and setup took less than five minutes. We then flew from the UK to Santorini and yay, my phone connected immediately. Coverage across Greece was actually excellent!
- In Athens, the signal was strong everywhere we went, from the ferry port into the city and while exploring all the neighbourhoods around the Acropolis.
- On Paros, we rented a car and drove around the island using Google Maps without experiencing any dead zones.
- And in Santorini, connectivity was also very reliable across the main tourist areas.
The only place where the internet becomes unpredictable is during ferry crossings between islands, which brings me to something many travellers don’t realise.
The Reality of Ferry Wi-Fi in Greece

When travelling between Greek islands, you’ll often see onboard Wi-Fi packages offered for purchase on ferries.
I tried this once and honestly, it wasn’t worth it. The connection was slow, unreliable and expensive. For most of the journey, the Wi-Fi barely worked at all!
Mobile data works close to islands, but once you’re out in the open sea, you’ll usually lose signal temporarily.
Personally, I’ve found it’s much better to rely on a good eSIM while on land and simply enjoy the ferry journey without worrying about internet in the middle of the Aegean Sea.
My Top eSIM Picks for Greece
After testing multiple eSIM providers over the years, these are the two that I consistently come back to and that I found worked best in Greece.
🥇 Airalo: Best Overall eSIM for Greece
Airalo has become my go-to eSIM provider for travel. I’ve used it in multiple destinations around the world and it worked flawlessly throughout Greece as well.
Setup is incredibly simple. You purchase the eSIM, scan the QR code and install it directly onto your phone. The whole process takes just a few minutes.
Why I Like Airalo:
- Very affordable plans
- Easy setup in under 5 minutes
- Reliable coverage in cities and on most islands
- Easy data top-ups via the app
- Works across Europe if you choose a regional plan
Perfect for you if:
You want an affordable, reliable eSIM for maps, browsing, social media and general travel use.

How Much Data Do You Really Need to Get for a Greece eSIM?
Most travellers don’t need as much mobile data as they think. If you’re using your phone for Google Maps, messaging, emails and the occasional Instagram scroll, plan on roughly 500MB to 1GB per day. That puts most 7-14 day trips comfortably in the 5-10GB range, especially if you’re connecting to hotel and café Wi-Fi.
Where people get caught out is video, uploading Reels, watching TikToks or hotspotting a laptop or second device can quickly double your usage and push you into a 15GB+ plan. A smarter approach is to start with a mid-range eSIM and top up if needed, rather than overpaying upfront for data you’ll likely never use.
A quick way to estimate your needs is to look at how much data you typically use at home. If you’re on a 20GB monthly plan and rarely run out, you’ll likely use the same or even less while travelling in Greece. On the flip side, if you’re constantly hitting your limit or rely heavily on streaming and hotspotting, you’ll need to factor that in and size up your eSIM plan accordingly.
2. Holafly: Best Unlimited Data eSIM
If you’re someone who uses a lot of mobile data while travelling, Holafly is a great option.
Holafly offers unlimited data plans, which means you never need to worry about running out of data mid-trip.
This is particularly useful if you:
- Work remotely
- Upload a lot of content
- Stream videos
- Frequently hotspot your laptop
While speeds can sometimes be slightly throttled during very heavy use, the convenience of unlimited data makes Holafly a fantastic choice for heavy users.
Why I Like Holafly:
- Unlimited data plans
- Easy setup via QR code
- Excellent customer support
- Flexible plans from just 1 day

Should You Get a Greece eSIM or a Europe eSIM?

This is something many travellers don’t realise when planning their trip. If Greece is your only destination, a Greece-specific eSIM like the one I used works perfectly.
However, many travellers combine Greece with other nearby countries such as:
- Italy
- Croatia
- Albania
- France
- Spain
In my case, we actually arrived in Greece after travelling through London and Scotland, and continued on a road trip through the South of France afterwards.
That’s why I used a Europe eSIM, which worked great across multiple countries without needing to swap SIM cards. If your itinerary includes more than one European destination, I strongly recommend choosing a Europe-wide eSIM plan.
eSIM Coverage in Greece (My Experience)
Connectivity across Greece was generally excellent in the destinations I visited.
| Location | Coverage | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Athens | Excellent | Strong signal throughout the city |
| Paros | Very good | No dead zones while driving |
| Santorini | Very good | Reliable across the main tourist areas of Oia, Fira, Imerovigli |
| Ferry crossings | Limited | Signal drops mid-sea but returns near islands |
Security Tip When Using Hotel Wi-Fi
While many hotels in Greece offer good Wi-Fi, I rarely rely on public networks without extra protection.
Whenever I connect to a hotel or café Wi-Fi, I always use a VPN for security. I like this one, it’s affordable and I have used it across the world.
Public networks can be vulnerable to hacking, and sensitive activities like online banking should ideally be avoided on unsecured Wi-Fi. Using your eSIM data connection or a VPN is a much safer option.
Tips for Using an eSIM in Greece
✔ Install your eSIM before flying
This allows your phone to connect immediately upon landing.
✔ Keep your primary SIM active
Most phones allow both SIMs to run simultaneously, which is useful for receiving authentication texts.
✔ Download offline maps
Helpful if you’re driving around islands where the signal may briefly drop.
✔ Expect limited signal during ferry crossings
Internet usually returns once you approach land.
If it’s your first time using Airalo, you can get 15% off with code “BREATHINGTRAVEL15”. If you’ve used it before, “BREATHINGTRAVEL10” still gives you 10% off.
Comparison: Physical SIM vs eSIM vs Ferry Wi-Fi
