Where to Stay in Santorini: Best Areas + Hotels for Couples, Views and Value

Santorini is one of the most breathtaking islands in the world. Dramatic caldera cliffs, whitewashed buildings, volcanic beaches, and world‑famous sunsets make it a must-visit destination, especially for couples.
My husband and I visited Santorini on our honeymoon around the world, travelling through the Greek islands, including Paros, which we also loved. Along the way, we met many honeymooners, and it quickly became clear that Santorini is designed for romance! Everything from accommodations to restaurants is very much tailored to couples seeking a magical escape.
Whether you’re after romantic cliffside suites, quiet beaches or staying in a more authentic village, this guide will help you decide where to stay, which hotels to consider and how to make your honeymoon or Greek island getaway truly unforgettable.
Why Santorini is Perfect for Couples
- Romantic Settings Everywhere: Whitewashed buildings, charming lanes and balconies overlooking the stunning caldera.
- Sunsets That Stop Time: Every evening we were on the island felt like a spectacle, particularly in Oia and Imerovigli.
- World-Class Food: From local tavernas to fine dining with panoramic views, the island is a food lover’s dream.
- Luxe Accommodations: Many luxury and boutique hotels are designed specifically for honeymooners and couples.
How to Choose Where to Stay in Santorini

Santorini isn’t one-size-fits-all. Here's what I recommend:
- Caldera cliffside villages such as Oia, Imerovigli or Firostefani: Choose for luxury, sunsets, romance
- Central hubs such as Fira: Choose for convenience, nightlife, also great for first-time visitors
- Beach towns such as Kamari & Perissa Beach: Choose for relaxation, great for families and water sports
Where you stay can define your honeymoon experience, so it’s worth planning carefully. What we found was that most people overpay to have the best of the best Caldera views and then they barely use them. If sunsets matter, stay overlooking the caldera. If sleep, space and value matter, base yourself elsewhere and visit the cliffs at sunset instead.
1. Oia: Iconic Sunset Luxury

⭐ Best for:
Honeymooners
Couples & romance
Dramatic sunsets & iconic views
Luxury travellers
❌ Don't stay here if:
You want budget value, Oia’s cliffside zones are some of the most expensive on the island!
You want beaches and water activities or you need easy transport links
Oia is the classic Santorini image: narrow lanes, blue-domed churches and cliffside terraces.
During our honeymoon, we spent days strolling the streets, enjoying quiet cafés in the morning and catching unforgettable sunsets each evening. The atmosphere is unmistakably romantic, with countless accommodations designed for couples.
Recommended Luxury Hotels in Oia
- Katikies Santorini: One of the island’s famous luxury cliffside hotels with multiple infinity pools, superb service and panoramic caldera sunset panoramas. Most epic honeymoon option if you have the budget!
- Mystique Santorini: Ultra-luxury property carved into the cliffs with private plunge pools, a designer spa and cliff-edge dining spots overlooking the Aegean. Absolute standout experience for couples!
- Canaves Oia Suites: A boutique luxury accommodation with cliff-edge caves, private plunge pools and intimate service levels. Stunning design and prime location without the scale of the larger brands.
- Andronis Arcadia Hotel: We stayed at this sophisticated resort facing away from the caldera. It's got spacious suites and villas, extensive amenities including a superb spa, a beach club and multiple restaurants) and Aegean sea views without the typical Oia caldera cliff price tag. Luxury choice for travellers who prioritise space, service and facilities over the flagship sunset vista.
Insider Tip: Expect crowds during peak hours, but the view is worth it. Book early to secure the best rooms.
2. Fira: The Heart of Santorini

⭐ Best for:
First-time Santorini visitors
Nightlife, bars and late dinners
Central base with bus connections across the island
Travellers who want caldera views without Oia-level pricing
❌ Don't stay here if:
You want peace & privacy, Fira is busy!
You are travelling on a honeymoon
You want beach acces
You are sensitive to crowds, cruise ship traffic and noise
Fira, the island’s capital, balances charm with convenience. It’s lively, with shops, restaurants and easy access to buses, ferries and excursions.
On our honeymoon, we deliberately chose not to stay in Fira. While it’s convenient and lively, we weren’t looking for nightlife, crowds or constant movement. Our priority was privacy, slower mornings and quiet evenings, which Fira doesn’t really offer once the cruise ships arrive and the bars fill up at night.
Instead, we visited Fira during the day to explore the shops and enjoyed a meal, then returned to a quieter base elsewhere on the island. For us, Fira worked far better as a place to experience briefly, not to sleep.
Recommended Hotels for All Budgets in Fira
- ($$$) Athina Luxury Suites: Elegant rooms, celebrated for panoramic caldera vistas and quiet style in a central location in Fira.
- ($$) Enigma Suites: A great little boutique option with excellent views and an intimate ambience. The suite with hot tub is worth it!
- ($) Astro Palace Hotel: A solid mid-range accommodation pick with a pool and central Fira access.
Insider Tip: Note that many properties in Fira are not cliff-edge but rather offer partial caldera or sea views from terrace rooms! Make sure you confirm the room type you're staying in at the time of booking.
3. Imerovigli: Tranquil Cliffside Views

⭐ Best for:
Honeymooners and couples seeking romance without chaos
Dramatic caldera views at better value than Oia
Peace, privacy and slower evenings
❌ Don't stay here if:
You want nightlife, bars and late dinners on your doorstep
You rely on frequent public transport
You want beach access
You prefer a busy, social atmosphere with lots happening at night
Imerovigli is quieter than Oia, yet just as visually striking and, in our experience, far more enjoyable. Having stayed in both areas, this is hands down my preferred location for couples, especially if you are in your 30s and value calm over constant stimulation.
We were not looking for nightlife, crowds or noise. We wanted space, quality sleep and views that actually felt special, not something you had to compete or queue up for. Imerovigli delivered all of that. It consistently felt better value, while Oia, in our view, is often overhyped for what you pay. You can easily visit Oia for the day, enjoy the scenery and restaurants, then retreat somewhere quieter.
Imerovigli’s elevated position along the caldera offers sweeping panoramic views that are genuinely hard to beat. On our honeymoon, this became our favourite spot on the island for peaceful mornings and unhurried moments. We also noticed many other couples choosing Imerovigli for the same reason: it attracts travellers who prioritise tranquillity, romance and quality over buzz. If we returned to Santorini, this is the area we would choose again without hesitation.
Recommended Hotels in Imerovigli
- Kivotos Santorini: High-end, design-led rooms with private terraces and sweeping caldera views.
- Kapari Natural Resort: We loved our stay here! The traditional cave architecture, excellent service and spectacular caldera views over breakfast are just incredible. This is one of the best value-for-money stays in Imerovigli and a smart alternative to pricier luxury hotels!
- White Santorini: Stay at this refined, all-suite property in Imerovigli with expansive private terraces, many with pools or hot tubs, offering panoramic caldera sunsets, personalised in-room breakfasts and a quiet spa-led experience ideal for couples.
4. Firostefani: Calm but Connected

⭐ Best for:
Couples and honeymooners who want romance without the intensity & price tag of Oia
Caldera views at noticeably better value than Oia
Quieter evenings with easy access to Fira on foot
Travellers who want scenery and convenience, but less noise
❌ Don't stay here if:
You're looking for nightlife, bars and late dinners outside your door
You need direct beach access
You prefer a lively, social atmosphere
You rely heavily on buses (while walkable to Fira, options are still limited at night)
Firostefani sits between Fira and Imerovigli. It’s a peaceful alternative to the busier hubs, yet still within walking distance to restaurants and nightlife.
We didn’t stay in Firostefani, but it was a serious contender for us and one we would have happily chosen as an alternative to Imerovigli. It offers a similar caldera-side setting with sweeping views, but with slightly more activity and easier access to Fira on foot.
For couples who want the drama of the cliffs without committing to Oia-level prices or crowds, Firostefani sits in a very sensible middle ground. It’s quieter than Fira, more affordable than Oia, and still delivers the scenery Santorini is known for, which makes it a strong option for a relaxed yet well-connected stay.
Insider Tip: One thing to note about Firostefani is that the majority of accommodation is in the mid-range category. True luxury hotels are limited here.
Recommended Hotels in Firostefani:
- Dana Villas & Infinity Suites: One of the few higher-end options in Firostefani, known for its infinity pools, elevated caldera views and romantic suites, making it a strong choice for couples who want luxury touches without the scale or pricing of Oia.
- Agali Houses: Well-reviewed Cycladic-style suites with tasteful design and a relaxed feel, including stunning views over the sea and volcano.
- Remvi Suites: Boutique property offering stylish, comfortable suites with caldera-adjacent views, thoughtful design and a relaxed atmosphere, making it a solid mid-range choice for couples.
5. Kamari & Perissa: Beachside Retreats

⭐ Best for:
Travellers who prioritise beach access and space over caldera views
Families and longer stays
Water sports, swimming and relaxed seaside dining
Better overall value, especially in peak season
❌ Don't stay here if:
You want caldera sunsets and iconic cliffside scenery
You are travelling mainly for romance or a honeymoon feel
You want to be close to Santorini’s postcard villages
You dislike driving or relying on buses to reach the caldera towns
The black-sand beach towns, Kamari and Perissa, are an ideal choice if your priority is sun, swimming and relaxed seaside living. While they don’t offer caldera views or sunset drama, they make up for it with space, walkable promenades, beachfront restaurants and a noticeably slower pace.
Accommodation here tends to be more affordable and generous in size, which suits longer stays, couples who prefer practicality over spectacle and travellers who want easy access to the beach each day. If Santorini’s cliffs feel overwhelming or overpriced, Kamari and Perissa provide a calmer, more grounded alternative that still delivers a genuinely enjoyable island stay.
Recommended Hotels
- Nikki Beach Resort & Spa Santorini: A lifestyle-driven beachfront resort in Kamari with stylish design and beach club energy, ideal for travellers who want luxury seaside living, vibrant pool ambience and direct access to the black-sand stretch.
- Costa Grand Resort & Spa: Beachfront resort in Kamari offering spacious rooms and suites, multiple pools, wellness facilities and direct access to the black sand beach, making it an excellent choice for couples and families.
- Aegean Plaza Hotel: Well-located mid-range property in Kamari offering comfortable rooms just a short walk from the beach and a practical base for exploring Santorini’s seaside without premium pricing.
Quick Decision Guide for Couples
| Trip Type | Best Area(s) |
|---|---|
| Honeymoon / Romantic | Oia, Imerovigli |
| First-Time / Convenient | Fira, Firostefani |
| Beach-Focused | Kamari, Perissa |
| Culture & Authenticity | Pyrgos, Emporio, Akrotiri |
Insider Tip: Rent a car from the ferry or airport. Transfers and taxis are expensive and a car allows you to explore hidden beaches, traditional villages, and nearby islands at your own pace.
Where to Stay in Santorini – Final Words

Santorini isn’t just a destination, it’s an experience shaped almost entirely by where you stay.
Whether you’re planning a honeymoon, marking a milestone or simply drawn to the island’s whitewashed villages and legendary sunsets, your base will influence how calm, crowded or special your trip actually feels. Plan early, choose your area with intention and don’t default to hype. The right location will make or break your experience.
If you’re weighing up Santorini against other Cycladic islands, it’s also worth understanding how different the stay can feel elsewhere. Milos, for example, offers a far more relaxed approach to accommodation, with boutique hotels and villas spread across quieter beach towns rather than concentrated cliffside hubs. If you’re considering pairing the two or opting for something less performative and more liveable, this guide to where to stay in Milos will help you choose the right base without guesswork.
