Where to Stay in Yogyakarta (Incl. Hotels Near Borobudur)

aerial view of Yogyakarta City Centre

What can I say about Yogyakarta? Well, there are a lot of people (I mean a lot), it's very hot, and there's too much traffic (which makes crossing the street an adventure in itself).

Also, another interesting thing about this bustling city (quite different from what I saw in other Indonesian cities, like Bali or Seminyak) is that people will literally stop you in the middle of the street to ask for a photo with you (you'll feel like a superstar).

Staying in Yogyakarta is undoubtedly an experience like any other, and choosing the right place to stay is crucial. As I've just returned from my trip, you'll find my comprehensive guide to the best neighborhoods in the city and surrounding areas so you can choose the hotel in Yogyakarta that best suits your likes and needs.

Where to stay in Yogyakarta: Area Overview

beautiful view of the Mount Merapi

In Yogyakarta (called “Jodja” by the locals), you'll get the taste of a truly Indonesian city with all the buzz it offers. Still, be advised that it can be overwhelming. That said, don't miss the opportunity to visit (and stay) in the former and first capital of Indonesia, which a king still rules.

Here is a quick breakdown of the different areas in and around the city to help you decide on the best hotel for your stay in Yogyakarta.

  • Malioboro: Yogyakarta's central hub is ideal for shopping, dining, and experiencing local culture.
  • Prawirotaman: Trendy, laid-back district, popular with backpackers and budget travelers.
  • Sinduadi: Modern, developing area north of Yogyakarta, perfect for a more quiet and family-friendly stay.
  • Prambanan: Centered around the Prambanan Temple, ideal for history and culture enthusiasts.
  • Parangtritis Beach: Right by the beach, offering stunning coastal views.
  • Borobudur: A scenic area centered around the world-renowned Borobudur Temple.

Pro Travel Tips: It can get boiling and humid in Yogyakarta, especially on the main streets and the indoor markets, so make sure you stay hydrated. Additionally, it is better to visit sights early in the morning as there will be less heat and fewer crowds. Speaking of markets, the prices are never final, so be ready to activate your negotiation powers.

1. Where to Stay in Yogyakarta as First-Time Visitors: Malioboro

At Malioboro, you'll find a truly unique blend of cultural experiences, shopping, and dining, making it a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to Yogyakarta.

Although the Prambanan area is less developed than the city center, its natural beauty offers a unique environment to stay in.

If you are visiting Yogyakarta for its culture and history, staying in the Prambanan area is a great choice. Here, you can easily access the temple and other nearby archaeological sites, giving you a deeper understanding of Javanese culture and history.

One thing I found extremely helpful was hiring a local guide. You'll certainly have a richer experience and deeper insights into the cultural and historical significance of the sites you're visiting.

Centered around the world-famous Borobudur Temple, the world's largest Buddhist monument, and a UNESCO World Heritage site, Borobudur offers a tranquil and scenic environment, ideal for those looking for quiet and immersing themselves in cultural and spiritual experiences.

The surrounding lush landscapes, rice fields, and traditional villages provide a peaceful retreat from the bustling city and are great to simply unwind and relax at a luxury resort.

Note: Borobudur is a “bonus” location on this list as it is not in Yogyarta but 25 miles northwest of the city, in the Magelang Regency of Central Java. I included it here because I imagine that many of you are coming to the neighborhood for the magnificent Temple, and staying here is a great option to avoid the back-and-forth traveling.
