Where To Stay In Vietnam: Most Beautiful Places + Hotel Picks

No matter if you are an experienced traveler, a first-time budget backpacker, or just someone who loves exploring the world, Vietnam is an absolute must-visit.

It's seriously one of the best travel destinations in Southeast Asia, and even though for me it wasn't love at first sight, I can almost guarantee you'll fall head over heels for the country's French Colonial Architecture, its golden beaches, and sometimes a bit overwhelming streets of the national capital Hanoi.

This country has it all – breathtaking nature (I mean, have you heard of Halong Bay?), fascinating history and culture, and a culinary scene that's truly world-class.

And the best part? It's super affordable, easy to get around, and you'll meet tons of travelers along the way because it's such a popular spot.

Now that you're about to catch the Vietnam bug, I know you'll be itching to find out where to stay, what to see, and everything in between. I've been to Vietnam multiple times and each visit just makes me fall in love all over again. So, I've put together an entire guide to help you figure out the best places to stay in Vietnam and ensure you have the most amazing time possible.

Best places to stay in Vietnam

Vietnam has loads of amazing places for you to stay and visit. Let's focus on the best spots that you definitely shouldn't miss on your itinerary!

For your very first time, Hanoi has got to be your go-to spot. It's filled with history and culture, and it's also very close to famous landmarks like Halong Bay and its popular day trip spot Cat Ba Island. Plus, it's got some of the best street food in all of Vietnam.

Couples looking for a romantic getaway from the big cities should check out Hoi An. This small ancient town is famous for its night markets, Japanese architecture, and lantern-lit Old Town.

If you're looking for the perfect family beach destination, Nha Trang is the place to be. There are loads of different beaches, luxury resorts with family suites, and one of Vietnam's best theme parks.

Ho Chi Minh City should be on everyone's travel list. It's the cultural hub of Vietnam with tons of museums and galleries. Plus, it's ideal for budget travelers because accommodation here is very affordable.

Adventure seekers and outdoor lovers should consider Da Lat. This town in the Vietnamese highlands is perfect for hiking, canyoning, camping, and other outdoor activities.

Sapa, in the North of Vietnam, offers potentially the most incredible views with its stunning rice terraces and the over 3000m high mountain Fansipan.

Lastly, we've got Hue, the old capital of Vietnam. Filled with royal palaces and temples, it gives a nice contrast to other destinations. Perfect for history buffs!

BONUS: Looking for a hidden gem? Consider Phu Quoc, a tropical paradise island on the southwest coast of Vietnam. Renowned for its white-sand beaches, crystal-clear waters, and lush forests, you will love staying in Phu Quoc if you're after relaxation, water sports, and natural beauty.

1. Where to stay in Vietnam for the first time: Hanoi

where to stay in vietnam - hanoi

If you're visiting Vietnam for the first time, Hanoi is the place to be. As the capital, it perfectly captures the essence of Vietnam.

You'll find a wonderful mix of busy streets, amazing activities, an exciting culture, and beautiful French colonial architecture.

The Old Quarter is a must-visit, with its bustling night markets, narrow streets, and delicious street food. Don't forget to make a stop at Hoan Kiem Lake, located in the heart of Hanoi's Old Quarter.

It's a tranquil and picturesque lake surrounded by cultural landmarks and offers a peaceful escape from the bustling city. Locals love coming here on weekends and around sunset and it's one of my favorite places in Hanoi.

Hanoi is also home to a variety of fascinating museums and temples offering a glimpse into the country's rich history. Plus, it's incredibly easy to explore the surrounding areas as there are plenty of day tours departing from here.

Personally, I absolutely love Hanoi for all the reasons mentioned above. It's not just about the attractions, but also the convenience of having everything right at your fingertips.

Things to do in Hanoi

Hanoi itself has so much to offer that you could easily spend days just exploring the city.

You should definitely check out Hanoi's famous sights, like the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, Temple of Literature, the Imperial Citadel, the Hanoi Opera House, the Hoa Lo Prison Relic, the French Quarter, and the many temples and museums within the city.

And let's not forget about the incredible food scene! You can't leave Hanoi without trying the amazing Bahn Mi at Bahn Mi 25, grabbing a coffee at the crazy Train Street, or indulging in a slice of cake at the famous Note Cafe.

There are also many things outside of Hanoi that are absolutely worth checking out. Two must-dos while in Hanoi are taking a boat tour to Halong Bay or staying in Ha Long on a boat overnight or exploring the beautiful rice terraces and caves in Ninh Binh, which are 1.5 hours south.

This charming little town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and in my opinion, it's one of the most beautiful and romantic towns in all of Vietnam.

I actually spent a few days just strolling around the charming Old Town, discovering more and more of the French and Japanese architecture, and trying all the delicious foods and restaurants here.

The Thu Bon River gracefully flows through Hoi An, and let me tell you, the night market at the riverside is one of the absolute best in Vietnam!

The Old Town is also well known for its colorful lanterns that you'll find everywhere – in quaint shops, along the streets, and even in bars and restaurants. It's truly magical, especially at night.

Things to do in Hoi An

Hoi An is perfect for couples looking to relax and unwind. One of my favorite things to do here is get a couple's massage at one of the many spas in town. You can also take a cooking class together, where you'll learn how to make traditional Vietnamese dishes.

If you enjoy history and culture, visit the Japanese Covered Bridge, The Old House of Tan Ky, and the Heritage Art Gallery Museum. Or spend a day relaxing at the nearby An Bang Beach. There are also plenty of things to see on any Hoi An itinerary.
