Merida, also known as the White City, is the state capital of Yucatan and one of the biggest cultural hubs on the entire Yucatan Peninsula.

If you delving into Mexican history and culture, you love visiting museums, seeing stunning cathedrals, and experiencing beautiful architecture, Merida is the perfect spot for you.

Many tourists often skip exploring Merida as they opt for Cancun or Tulum. But let me tell you, there are plenty of reasons to discover Merida and all its awesome landmarks.

We actually rented a car in Cancun and drove the highway via Valladolid, where to stayed overnight, and visited Chichen Itza, and ended the trip in Merida, which was absolutely the perfect way to do it!

If you're planning on traveling Mexico, you know that choosing safe neighborhoods and hotels with a good standard are something to consider. So I put together a guide on everything there is to know about where to stay in Merida to make it a little easier for you to plan your next trip and add some culture to your Mexico vacation.

The best areas to stay in Merida

Merida, the capital city of Yucatan, is quite a big city with almost a million people living there. So, when you're booking your hotel, it's definitely a good idea to do some research on where to stay.

If you're a first-timer or just looking for a great experience, Zocalo is the best place to be. Zocalo is the heart of Merida with the main square right at the centre. Its historic centre, the Centro Histórico, is also where you'll find plenty of historic buildings, amazing restaurants, and fantastic hotels.

If you're more of the outgoing type and want to mingle with the locals, Santa Lucia with its many bars might be the perfect fit for you. I stayed within a few minutes walk from Plaza Grande, the main square and Santa Lucia Park, which was the perfect choice to have the best of both worlds.

For families and those seeking a more relaxing and peaceful atmosphere, I suggest checking out Santiago in the East of the city center.

If you're on a budget, Santa Ana is the place to be. It's still within walking distance to the historic parts of the city. You'll find loads of cheap eats, markets, and street food options here.

And lastly, we have Paseo de Montejo, the luxury district of Merida. Here, you'll find plenty of upscale hotels and amazing shopping opportunities.

1. Where to stay in Merida for the first time: Zocalo (Historic Centre)

where to stay in merida - zocalo

If you're visiting Merida for the first time, staying in Zocalo is my top pick. Right in the historic center of Merida with its main square, is the perfect place for you to stay.

Here you'll find Plaza Grande, the main square, right in its heart. The whole area revolves around it, with plenty of old colorful buildings, the cathedral and government buildings.

You'll also find some of the most iconic landmarks in Merida here, like Casa Montejo, the Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Olimpo Cultural Center, which hosts various art exhibits all year round.

This area is perfect for those who want to be in the heart of all the cultural action. It's a very safe area and you can easily walk around and explore all the amazing museums, art galleries, and restaurants in the area.

Best area for:

  • First-timers

  • Mexican culture

  • Very safe

Things to do in Zocalo, Merida

Zocalo is packed with plenty of things to do. It's such a bustling area with cool shops, restaurants, and attractions.

Just taking a leisurely walk around the streets leading away from the main square and exploring is one of my favorite things to do there. You'll find all the museums and art galleries within walking distance, so be sure to check them all out.

Merida City Centre facade

Some of my personal favorites are Casa Montejo and the Museum of Yucatan Art, especially if you're interested in learning more about Mayan culture.

After some museum hopping, take a break soaking up the atmosphere at Plaza Grande and pay a visit to the Cathedral of Merida. It's a lively spot with street performers, vendors selling traditional handicrafts, and plenty of local food stalls.

And when you're ready for some delicious Mexican food, head over to Matilda Salon near Plaza Grande.

I know, street food in Mexico is incredible, but that doesn't mean there's no room for upscale, fancy Mexican cuisine. Matilda is a beautiful restaurant with amazing decor, and they serve the most delicious Mexican food with a fancy touch. I absolutely loved it, and you have to go when you're in Merida!

Merida nightlife

If you're looking for a place to stay in Merida that offers a great nightlife experience and an authentic vibe, Santa Lucia is the spot for you.

Right next door but not as touristy as Zocalo, as it's more of a residential area where locals hang out. I personally love this part of town because you're not right in the midst of all the tourist hustle and bustle, but still close enough to explore museums and attractions.

Staying here will definitely make you feel more like a local than a tourist.

The area also hosts some cool festivals and celebrations throughout the year, like the famous Yucatan Serenade Dance Festival. It is a street festival with dance shows and parades, and it's super cool to see.

One of my absolute favorite things to do here is hopping between the many bars and restaurants that offer live music. Mercado 60 is a great spot, like a cozy food court where you can meet new people, enjoy some delicious tacos, and sip on affordable margaritas.

We also ate at Apoala, located right on on the Parque Santa Lucia, one night where the food was excellent as well.

Another hotspot I highly recommend is Eladio's, a huge venue with live music and a wide variety of food and drink options. It kind of feels like the real deal when it comes to Mexican nightlife.

And let me tell you, there are some really good restaurants with amazing Mexican and international food options in the area too!

Don't miss a visit to Rosas & Xocolate, which is a boutique hotel attached with a cafe attached to it. Or stop by Zinc Comfort Food, if you're craving some French food! I recommend the buckwheat galette.

If you're a culture buff, you've got to check out two of my favorite spots. First, there's the regional anthropology museum, which is just fascinating.

And then there's Montejo 495, a unique museum that tells the story of Merida through its architecture. It's a huge city mansion that you'll get to explore with a guide, and it's super impressive to see how the other half lives.
