Where to Stay In Colombo: Best Area + Favorite Places (2024)

Colombo, the garden city of the East, used to be known for its charm in the 19th century. Unfortunately, it became a city that tourists would merely fly into and leave right away to reach Sri Lanka's beautiful beaches in the south. But things are changing!

Colombo may not have fully regained its old glory, but it's definitely a place you shouldn't skip when visiting Sri Lanka.

The city is packed with culture, amazing food, and interesting history. After visiting, I must say, I could have stayed longer than just a few days.

On your next trip, you should give Sri Lanka's capital a serious chance. That's why I've put together my favorite neighborhoods and hotels, so you can easily decide where to stay in Colombo.

Best areas to stay in Colombo

Colombo is a city with a whopping 5.6 million people across 13 districts. Let me share my favorite spots with you!

For all first-timers, Colombo Fort is the best place and an absolute must-visit. It's the heart of the city, packed with landmarks, museums, and hotels.

If you're up for some nightlife exploration, Slave Island, right next to Galle Fort, is your go-to.

Galle Face, an area right on the beach, is home to some of the most luxurious hotels in Colombo, making it perfect for everyone looking for some pampering.

One of my personal favorites is the Cinnamon Gardens neighborhood. It's a bit further out, but trust me, it's worth it. You'll find amazing cafes, restaurants, and parks here, which is why it's also the favorite area of many expats who live in Colombo.

Last but not least, Thimbirigasyaya is Colombo's up-and-coming and hipster area. Here you'll get to explore some of the coolest art galleries, bars, and cafes.

1. Where to stay in Colombo for the first time: Colombo Fort

Where to stay in Colombo - Colombo Fort

Fort is the historical center and bustling business district of Colombo, filled with colonial buildings, modern high rises, shops, and markets. Its central location makes it the perfect choice for first-time visitors to Colombo.

As the name suggests, this area used to be the center of administration during the Dutch and British rule and was surrounded by a protective wall, hence the name “Fort”.

Here, you will find all kinds of historical buildings such as the Old Parliament and the Dutch Hospital, the latter of which has been transformed into a shopping mall known as the Dutch Hospital Shopping Precinct, and the Red Mosque, Jami Ul-Alfar.

Moreover, from Fort, it's super easy to explore other areas such as Galle Face, where you can relax by Colombo's beach, or take a quick trip to Pettah, the charming old town of Colombo.

Best area for:

  • Sightseeing

  • First-timers

  • Shopping

  • Central location

  • Business travelers

Things to do in Colombo Fort

If you're starting your trip at Colombo Fort, checking out the historical buildings is a fantastic way to begin. The Old Parliament, the National Museum of Colombo, and the Red Mosque are three must-sees when it comes to architectural sights in Fort. Especially the Red Mosque is a great location for a picture.

If you're in the mood for shopping, head over to the Dutch Hospital Shopping Precinct. You can grab some souvenirs or local products there, but it's also a great spot for drinks and dinner. The mall has plenty of bars and restaurants offering amazing drinks and happy hour specials.

If you're feeling a little more adventurous, then Pettah is the place to be. You'll find open bazaars and bustling markets selling all sorts of goodies there, from clothes to spices. But fair warning, it can get a little chaotic.

Pettah has more of a local vibe, which definitely adds to the excitement and makes you feel like you actually arrived in Sri Lanka!

The Galle Face area is famous for its luxurious hotels and resorts, making it the ideal spot for a romantic getaway or a lavish vacation. It's located along Colombo's coastline, just south of Fort, and from here, you'll witness the most breathtaking sunsets in all of Colombo.

Galle Face is also super popular for the Galle Face Green, a large open green space right by the ocean, perfect for picnics and sunset strolls. Since there isn't a beach in Colombo, many people hang out on the Galle Face Green instead.

Right behind the Galle Face Green on the Esplanade, you'll find some of the best restaurants and street food vendors with the most amazing views. It's the perfect spot for a fancy dinner or a quick snack!

Best area for:

Things to do in Galle Face

If you're looking for a great time, the star of the show here is definitely the Galle Face Green. I highly recommend coming here in the afternoon, bringing a blanket, and just sitting on the grass.

You can enjoy the beautiful sunset, maybe grab a couple of beers, and try all the amazing little snacks from the street vendors by the ocean. Galle Face Beach is not really a beach but rather a small stretch of sand and the beach is not recommended for swimming.

For all shopaholics out there, Galle Face is perfect for you! It's home to one of Colombo's best shopping centers, the One Galle Face Mall. You'll find all your favorite international brands here, including a nice food court that has all the fast food joints that will remind you of home.

When it comes to dining, I've got two recommendations for you. First up is Bombay Borough, where they serve amazing Indian dishes.

And if you're up for something a bit different, check out The Bavarian. It's a German restaurant in Colombo, but trust me, when my German cravings kick in or you're craving some comfort food, this is where they serve some of the best German food and great beer too, obviously!

Of course, there is more to the area than just the cafes. In Cinnamon Gardens, you definitely need to visit the National Museum of Colombo, located in the beautiful Viharamahadevi Park. You'll learn all about the history of Sri Lanka and see some astonishing artifacts.
