Where to Stay in Abu Dhabi: 5 BEST Areas + My Hotel Picks
Abu Dhabi, the capital city of the UAE, is as you’d expect, polished, elegant and unapologetically luxurious.
On my recent layover from Europe back to Australia, I visited my friend in Dubai, but since I was on an Etihad Airways flight, I had to take a little detour via Abu Dhabi as that’s their main airport, so I stayed in Abu Dhabi overnight and finally spent proper time exploring the city, not just transiting through the airport.
Abu Dhabi is ideal for 2–4 nights, luxury stays, stopovers or resort-focused trips. If you’re backpacking or looking for nightlife-first travel, Abu Dhabi is not the best base.
Even though I’ve passed through Abu Dhabi International Airport countless times, this was only my second actual visit to the city, and it confirmed what many travellers miss. Abu Dhabi delivers world-class hotels and experiences, but at a calmer, more cultural pace than Dubai.
From the moment you set foot in the Abu Dhabi International Airport to your hotel, and even the streets and restaurants, everything here has a polished and perfect vibe, similar to the one you find when staying in Dubai.
What I love about this city is that it is spread across different islands, each with its unique experiences and plenty of cool things to do in between. Whether it’s exploring shopping malls, dining at fantastic restaurants or enjoying theme parks, Abu Dhabi is like a playground for big kids, aka adults. And the best part is, amidst all the modernity, the charm and culture of older times still remain.
This guide breaks down exactly where to stay in Abu Dhabi, based on first-time visits, luxury travel, families, budget stays and shopping-focused trips. If you’re deciding between cities, I’ve also compared Dubai vs Abu Dhabi in detail in a separate guide.

Where to Stay in Abu Dhabi – Frequently Asked Questions
In my opinion, The Corniche is perfect for most travellers, from couples to families. Saadiyat Island is an absolute gem if you want luxury 5-star properties and top service. Abu Dhabi’s resorts are some of the best you’ll ever have the pleasure of staying in and are worth the splurge! Even outside of my favourite areas, you’ll find amazing hotels and resorts, such as the Ritz Carlton Abu Dhabi in Khor Al Maqta’a, which is one of the closest hotels to the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque.
To fully experience Abu Dhabi, I personally recommend staying for a minimum of 3-4 nights. However, if you’re looking for a relaxing resort getaway, you could certainly extend your visit for a week. In my opinion, 3-4 nights is the perfect timeframe to explore the city, participate in activities and also have some time to relax. It’s also possible to see all the highlights in a short layover of 1-2 nights.
The most convenient way to get around Abu Dhabi is by taxi or ride-sharing services like Uber or Careem. Public transportation options such as buses and the metro are also available. Lastly, you can easily rent a car if you prefer and have an international driver’s license.
While Abu Dhabi may be known for its luxurious resorts and high-end shopping, there are also plenty of budget-friendly options available. Accommodations in areas like Al Zahiyah tend to be more affordable, and there are many free or low-cost activities to enjoy as well. However, if you’re looking for a luxury experience, it can certainly add up in cost.
Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Doha each are very different and unique in their own right, but choosing the right city depends on your travel style. Dubai is all about glitz and glamour, towering skyscrapers, world-class shopping, vibrant nightlife and nonstop activity. Abu Dhabi, often overshadowed by Dubai, offers a more relaxed pace with rich cultural attractions like the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Louvre Abu Dhabi and beautiful beachfronts. Doha, Qatar’s capital, is a blend of modern city life and traditional heritage, with impressive museums, a charming Corniche and a growing culinary scene.
If you crave luxury, entertainment and high-energy city life, Dubai is your go-to. For culture, tranquility, and immersive experiences, Abu Dhabi wins. And for a mix of modernity and authentic Middle Eastern charm, staying in Doha is an emerging contender.

If you’re thinking that Dubai might be a bit too over the top and not enough culture and exploration, then Abu Dhabi is just right for you!
Yes, Abu Dhabi also has a luxurious feel too, but here you can still find plenty of Arabic culture. It’s the perfect mix of luxury, shopping and exploration. Also note that Dubai is highly cosmopolitan and Abu Dhabi is slightly more conservative.
Whether you’re stopping over, planning a short luxury break or travelling with family, choosing the right area will make all the difference.
Abu Dhabi may be quieter than Dubai, but that’s exactly its appeal.
