Where to Stay In Zagreb: Best Places to Stay (2024)

When you think of Croatia, what often comes to mind are the beautiful rocky coastlines, crystal clear water, amazing food, and super affordable prices. But here's the thing: many people tend to overlook Croatia's capital city, Zagreb, in their travel plans. And let me tell you, you've been missing out!

Sure, Croatia's coast is stunning, but those low prices you've been imagining don't quite exist in most tourist spots by the ocean anymore. Trust me, I just went a few months ago in the height of summer and it was pretty busy and definitely expensive!

If you want to experience the real Croatia, dive into the country's rich history and culture, try its incredible food, and meet some of the friendliest locals, without breaking the bank, then visiting Zagreb is the way to go.

So I've put together this guide on where to stay in Zagreb to help you plan your trip and find the perfect accommodation. I'll dive deep into which areas in Zagreb are the best as well as my hotel picks.

Best areas to stay in Zagreb

Zagreb, the capital of Croatia, is quite a big city with nearly 1 million people. Let me give you the lowdown on my favorite areas to stay in.

If it's your first time here, the Lower Town is where you want to be. It's right in the city center, super close to all the cool sights, museums, and has some of the best hotels.

Now, if you're all about that European nightlife, the Upper Town is calling your name. The bars, restaurants, and nightclubs here are top-notch.

For those on a budget, Kaptol is the place to be. It's just a short walk from the city center, so you can enjoy all the tourist attractions without breaking the bank.

An awesome place for families to stay is Jarun. It's a little further from the city center, so you can escape the hustle and bustle.

Right in the heart of the city center is the British Square. If you're staying here, you'll have easy access to the best shops and boutiques in Zagreb.

And if you're all about that modern vibe, head to Novi Zagreb in the south. It's a newly built residential area with plenty of great restaurants and cafes, and it's still within public transport access to the historic city center.

1. Where to stay in Zagreb for the first time: Lower Town

where to stay in zagreb - lower town

The Lower Town of Zagreb is the historical core and city center, packed with tons of things to do hence I always recommend it to first-timers in Zagreb.

You'll find the city center filled with historic landmarks like the Zagreb Cathedral, fascinating museums like the Archaeological Museum Zagreb, and a wide range of restaurants, cafes, and bars. The best part? Everything is conveniently within walking distance, so you won't need a car.

When it comes to accommodation, you'll have some of the best Zagreb hotels here in the Lower Town (Donji Grad). From fancy upscale hotels to affordable hostels and apartments, there's something for every budget.

Best area for:

  • First-timers

  • Sightseeing

  • Couples

Things to do in the Lower Town

There's so much to do and see in the Lower Town, you won't run out of things to fill your time here. One of the quirkiest activities is visiting the Museum of Hangovers. It's such a unique experience that takes you on a journey through the fascinating history of alcohol consumption and its impact on society.

If you're into art, you've got to check out the Croatian Association of Artists Art Center. They've got some truly amazing contemporary pieces by talented local artists.

And if you're up for something a bit different, there's also the Cannabis Museum which is highly interesting, even if you don't smoke cannabis yourself.

After you've explored all the sights, take a break and head over to Spunk – a super popular local bar where you can enjoy some beers with friendly locals. And for all you foodies out there, I have a recommendation as well: Boogie Lab Zagreb. They serve incredible pastries and sandwiches.

2. Where to stay in Zagreb for the best nightlife: Upper Town

where to stay in zagreb - upper town

The Lower Town and the Upper Town together form the heart of Zagreb. While the Lower Town is a bit more peaceful, the Upper Town is where the action happens.

If you're into nightlife and being in the center of it all, this is the place for you. And even if you're just looking to explore and take in the sights, Upper Town (Gornji Grad) is the perfect area for you.

Just like the Lower Town, the Upper Town has loads of historic landmarks, museums, and fantastic bars and restaurants to discover. On top of that, you'll also find great luxury hotels and cheap hotels in the area, making it suitable for any type of traveler.

Best area for:

  • Nightlife

  • Backpackers

  • Sightseeing

Things to do in the Upper Town

As the center of Zagreb's nightlife, there are plenty of things to keep you entertained in the Upper Town. For history buffs, the Archaeological Museum is a must-visit. They have a great collection of artifacts spanning from prehistoric times to the medieval period.

For a truly unique experience, head over to Gric Tunnel. It used to be a bomb shelter during World War II, but now it's a cool underground spot with exhibitions and events.

And when the sun sets, the Upper Town really comes alive! There are tons of bars and clubs to choose from. If you're into awesome cocktails, you have to check out my personal favorites – The Swanky Bar and Roots Cocktail Bar. And if you're into jazz music and delicious food, Fidel Gastro is the place to be. They serve up amazing steaks and wines.

For all beer lovers like my partner in crime, don't miss Valhalle Beer Bar. They have an awesome selection of craft beers and a super chill and casual vibe.

If you have a sweet tooth like myself, there's no way you can miss the Chocolate Museum in Zagreb City, it's a chocolate lover's dream!

3. Where to stay in Zagreb for budget travelers & backpackers: Kaptol

where to stay in zagreb - kaptol

Kaptol is a small area just north of central Zagreb that's perfect for those looking to save some cash.

Accommodation and other things like food are a little more affordable here but don't worry, it's still centrally located right next to Upper Town.

The historic neighborhood of Kaptol itself has plenty of awesome bars, cafes, and restaurants that are becoming more and more popular (and a bit pricier), but for now, it's still quite affordable.

Moreover, you'll find some popular landmarks like the Zagreb City Museum and the Zagreb Cathedral right here in Kaptol as well, which makes staying here totally worth it.

While Kaptol may not have as many luxury hotels as the city center, you'll find plenty of cozy apartments. It's perfect if you want to cook for yourself and save some extra money.

Best area for:

  • Backpackers

  • Cheaper prices

  • Authentic part of the city

Things to do in Kaptol

Kaptol might be one of the smaller areas, but when it comes to things to do, it packs a punch.

Start your day off with a visit to the iconic Zagreb Cathedral, it's a must-see landmark in the city. Afterward, head over to the Zagreb National Museum to learn a little more about Croatia's rich history.

For nature lovers, the Croatian Natural History Museum is a must-visit and one of my favorite museums in the city. They've got an impressive collection of fossils and minerals, plus interactive exhibits for everyone to enjoy.

Another of my favorites is the quirky Museum of Broken Relationships. It's a one-of-a-kind experience that showcases personal stories and objects from failed relationships around the world. It's a little unconventional, but if you have the time (or looking for a rainy-day activity), it's worth a visit.

Now, let's talk food! Kaptol has some seriously delicious options. If you're in the mood for traditional Croatian cuisine, head over to Konoba Didov San for dinner or Otto & Frank for breakfast or lunch. And if you're up for something different, you've got to try the highly-rated Sri Lankan food at Curry Bowl.

If you're planning a family trip to Zagreb, I recommend checking out Jarun. It's a neighborhood located in the west of Zagreb, a little outside the central area, but it's packed with amazing things to do for everyone, especially for those traveling with kids!

The heart of Jarun is Jarun Lake, which is the place to be, especially on those hot summer days. You'll find beautiful beaches around the lake, perfect for swimming or enjoying exciting watersports like kayaking and wakeboarding.

Plus, the lake is surrounded by lovely parks, as well as plenty of restaurants and cafes where you can grab a delicious bite.

Things to do in Jarun

Jarun is all about fun in the sun, and there's no better place to start than at Lake Jarun. The lake offers a variety of water activities, such as renting a paddleboard or kayak for a leisurely ride on the water. For those looking for more adventure, you can also take windsurfing lessons or rent jet skis at Beach Bar Jarun.

Beach Bar Jarun is also the perfect spot by the lake for a refreshing drink and some delicious food while soaking up the sun. If you're in the mood for some shopping or need to buy some essentials you forgot to pack, then head to the nearby Point Shopping Mall in Jarun.

But my absolute favorite thing to do in Jarun is having a picnic at the lake. Grab a blanket, and some snacks, and enjoy a peaceful afternoon surrounded by nature. It's the perfect way to relax and unwind with your family, and it's also much cheaper than going to a restaurant.

If you're looking for some alternative hipster vibes in Zagreb, British Square (Britanski trg) is the place to be. It's a cool district filled with young people and a relaxed, artsy atmosphere. I personally loved staying here, and I think you would too if you enjoy that kind of thing.

You'll find some amazing cafes, restaurants, and bars here, and the best part is, there are very few tourists around.

The colorful buildings and beautiful graffiti art lining the streets add to the cool and creative vibe of this area. Even if you decide not to stay here, it's worth checking out!

Best area for:

  • Cafe hopping

Things to do at the British Square

The British Square area has so much to offer, especially when it comes to diving into Zagreb's food scene. Start your day with a scrumptious breakfast at Zrno Bio Bistro, a cozy and trendy vegan restaurant that serves up delicious dishes crafted with fresh, organic ingredients.

Afterward, prepare for a mind-blowing experience at the Museum of Illusions. This interactive museum is an absolute blast for people of all ages with its mind-bending optical illusions and brain teasers.

Art enthusiasts will enjoy a visit to the Josip Konta Gallery. This small yet impressive gallery showcases contemporary Croatian art and often hosts fantastic exhibitions and events.

And when the evening rolls around, make sure to swing by Stari Kotac 2 for dinner. This local restaurant offers a modern twist on traditional Croatian dishes. Don't forget to treat yourself to their mouthwatering meat platter, featuring a tasty assortment of Croatian meats and cheeses.

Novi Zagreb is, as the name suggests, the newest and most modern neighborhood in Zagreb. While the city center is mainly filled with historic buildings and older architecture, this neighborhood in the south of Zagreb is brand new.

Novi Zagreb is a great area to stay in, especially for families or if you like it a bit more residential. There are loads of things to do here that will keep kids entertained.

Plus, you'll find plenty of parks, restaurants, and supermarkets in the area. And when you feel like sightseeing, you can easily catch a ride or take public transport to the city center.

From Novi Zagreb, it's also only a 15-minute ride to Zagreb Airport.

Novi Zagreb has a lot to offer, but most activities here are less about sightseeing and more about having fun with your friends or family. If you're staying in Novi Zagreb, you'll want to check out the Museum of Contemporary Art. It's a must-visit for any art lover, showcasing some of the best contemporary works from Croatian and international artists.

For a relaxing day out, head to Bundek Lake, a popular spot for swimming and water sports during the summer months. You can also have a picnic, go for a walk, or bike ride around the lake, or simply enjoy the beautiful surroundings.

Where to stay in Zagreb – Frequently Asked Questions

✅ What is the best part of Zagreb to stay?

If you're wondering about the best part of Zagreb to stay, I'd recommend the Lower Town, especially if you're here on a short layover as a tourist. It offers a perfect blend of all Zagreb attractions, historic landmarks, amazing bars and restaurants, and some of the best hotels in Zagreb. While there might be other areas that suit your preferences even better, generally you can't go wrong with staying in Lower Town.

🏘️ Is it better to stay in the Upper or Lower Town in Zagreb?

Both the Upper Town and Lower Town have their unique charm, so it ultimately depends on your personal preferences. Lower Town is closer to the Zagreb city center and offers more options for sightseeing, shopping, and dining. On the other hand, Upper Town has an incredible nightlife scene. In many cases, I would probably recommend the Upper Town to a younger crowd that also enjoys going out for a drink or wants to party, and the Lower Town to anyone who wants to focus more on exploring the city.

📆 How many days should I spend in Zagreb?

You can see the main sights of Zagreb in 2-3 days, but if you want to fully explore and experience the city, I would recommend staying for at least 4-5 days. This will allow you enough time to visit all the major attractions, try out different restaurants and cafes, and maybe even take a day trip to one of the nearby national parks. Overall, the duration of your stay will depend on your interests and budget.

🚌 How do I get around in Zagreb?

Zagreb has an excellent public transportation system with buses, trams, and trains that are well-connected. If you prefer, you can also hop on ride-sharing services like Uber or Bolt to navigate the city. Another fantastic way to explore Zagreb is by walking or renting a bike. Most areas are easily accessible on foot or by cycling. Additionally, there are also hop-on-hop-off buses and guided walking tours available for tourists.

Where to stay in Zagreb – Final Words

In my opinion, Zagreb is one of the most overlooked capital cities in Europe, but you know what? This might actually be a good thing. Unlike Rome, Vienna, or Budapest, Zagreb doesn't attract huge tourist crowds, and therefore prices are still reasonable and the queues are much shorter. And that's what makes it special!

You can have an amazing time in Zagreb without breaking the bank. The city is packed with museums (seriously, you won't have time to visit them all!), fantastic traditional and international restaurants, cool hipster bars, and some incredible hotels.

I highly recommend spending some time in Zagreb, whether it's for a city trip in Europe or as part of your Croatia adventure. I hope my guide has helped you figure out where to stay in Zagreb, and I'm sure you'll have a fantastic time in this charming European capital.
