Vientiane is your gateway to one of the best destinations in Southeast Asia, Laos. The bustling capital city, situated on the Mekong River at the border of Thailand, is a true melting pot of cultures and influences.

Vientiane offers many opportunities to dive into the country's rich history and culture, from fascinating museums to beautiful temples.

Choosing where to stay in a bustling capital like Vientiane can be quite a challenge. But don't worry, Vientiane may be Laos' major capital, but it still feels like a cozy little town and so I've put together a guide with my favorite neighborhoods and hotels to make your decision on where to stay in Vientiane a little bit easier.

Best areas to stay in Vientiane

Just as I mentioned before, Vientiane feels much smaller than it actually is, with most of my favorite neighborhoods right in the city center and within walking distance of each other.

If you're visiting for the first time, I totally recommend checking out the area of Ban Haysoke. Here you'll find some of the most popular hotels and restaurants, and you'll be right in the heart of the city center.

For those of you looking to explore Vientiane's nightlife, Watchan is the place to be. You'll find a variety of restaurants, night markets, and bars to keep you entertained.

Budget travelers and backpackers, make sure to have a look at Ban Anou. It's centrally located, and you'll find most hostels here, which offer mostly affordable prices for dorm beds.

Nongchan is a great little area, especially for families and those who want to stay a bit further away from the hustle and bustle. It's located outside the city center but offers some of the nicest resorts and hotels in the city.

And for all luxury seekers, Ban Kunta is the perfect address. It's also located outside of the city center, but here you'll find the most luxurious hotels in town.

1. Where to stay in Vientiane for the first time: Ban Haysoke (City Center)

where to stay in vientiane - city center

Ban Haysoke is an amazing area to stay in Vientiane, especially if you're a first-timer. It's right in the heart of the city, making it super convenient for all you can explore and see.

You'll love being close to the Mekong River and having easy access to plenty of hotels, restaurants, bars, shops, and markets. Everything you need is just a step away from your hotel door.

Plus, its location is perfect for sightseeing and exploring other parts of Vientiane. From here, it's super easy to catch a bus or a tuk-tuk to all the popular landmarks and sights.

Best area for:

  • First-timers

  • Sightseeing

  • Central location

Things to do in Ban Haysoke

Being in the city center means you have so many options to explore and do whatever you like. To start your morning, there are some amazing coffee spots in town.

While Vientiane may not have a huge coffee culture like Luang Prabang, you'll still find some great places. Personally, my two favorites are TIT Kafe and Naked Espresso Misay. They both serve delicious coffee and a yummy traditional breakfast and even have plant-based milks, which you certainly don't find everywhere in Laos!

Pha That Luang is one of Vientiane's main sights and just about a 15-minute drive from the city center. Come to marvel at the magnificent golden Buddhist stupa. Not only a national symbol but also a significant religious and cultural monument in Southeast Asia, its stunning architecture and historical significance make it a must-visit attraction for tourists and locals alike.

Don't miss out on visiting the Presidential Palace, one of Vientiane's biggest attractions. It's conveniently located within walking distance of Ban Haysoke, so definitely worth a visit.

And if you're up for some food and fun, head over to the Riverside Night Market. You'll find everything from handcrafted souvenirs to street food and your typical market clothes.

Watchan is an awesome area also located in the city center. It's packed with some of the coolest bars and restaurants, right by the Mekong riverside.

If you're up for staying out a little longer and sipping drinks with a view of the river, this is the place to be! Plus, there are some amazing boutique hotels in this area too.

On the flip side, Watchan is home to some of the best temples and museums in Vientiane. So, if you're into cultural adventures, you can have a fantastic day exploring.

Things to do in Watchan

If you're staying in the area, I highly recommend getting up early to do some temple hopping in the morning. The popular temples are all within walking distance and really close to each other.

Start with Wat Si Saket Temple, a stunning 19th-century Siamese-style temple with a museum. Then, check out Haw Phra Kaew, a former temple that was built in 1565 for the Emerald Buddha.

And don't miss one of my favorites, Wat Si Muang, a Buddhist temple that brings good luck and dates back to the 16th century. It's free to enter!

While you're exploring, make sure to swing by The Little House Vientiane. It's a great spot to grab a coffee and indulge in a slice of cake.

And when it comes to nightlife, my go-to place is Laodi Bar at the riverside. It's super laid back with a cozy rooftop, perfect for enjoying drinks during sunset. The bar staff is friendly and they can whip up any kind of cocktail you fancy. Plus, the drinks won't break the bank.

A little further away from the riverside is the vibrant neighborhood of Ban Anou. This place is a hit among backpackers, as it houses most of the city's hostels.

Ban Anou revolves around the lively Ban Anou Night Market, which adds a charming vibe to the whole area. There is always something happening here, making it a great area to stay. However, if you're looking for a peaceful and quiet retreat, this might not be the ideal spot.

Nevertheless, the night market is perfect for grabbing cheap meals and souvenirs.

You absolutely have to check out the night market when staying in Ban Anou. You'll find everything from tasty traditional Lao food to clothes and souvenirs, all at super reasonable prices.

This night market is known for being the cheapest in town, so it's a favorite among locals too. Try some of the BBQs they put on here – they're absolutely delicious.

Another must-visit spot in the area is Patuxai, a remarkable war monument inspired by the iconic Arc de Triomphe in Paris. It was built to honor the brave soldiers who lost their lives in war.

For a tiny fee, you can actually climb to the top of the monument and enjoy some of the most amazing panoramic views the city has to offer.

It's a truly eye-opening experience. The best part is that your visit can really make a difference as all proceeds go towards supporting UXO victims.

Another activity, which may be a little more suitable for kids, is visiting Buddha Park. Located just 30 minutes outside of Vientiane, this park showcases over 200 Buddhist statues.

It's truly amazing to see and makes for a fantastic day activity. You can either grab a taxi there or book a guided day tour from Vientiane.
