Where To Stay In Sri Lanka: Best Towns, Hotels + Things To Do

In my opinion, Sri Lanka in Southeast Asia is one of the best travel destinations you could choose. Who doesn't love a tropical climate, stunning beaches, delicious food, rich culture, and loads of temples and nature to explore?

The beach towns in the south are super laid back and perfect for surfers and yogis. The highlands in the center are full of fascinating history and culture, and the tea plantations there are simply beautiful. And let's not forget about the north, a paradise for adventurers and off-the-beaten-path travelers!

Having spent quite some time here, I know it can be overwhelming to decide where to stay in Sri Lanka. That's why I've put together this guide to help you choose from my favorite places.

Best places to stay in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka has something amazing for every type of traveler, whether you're on a budget or looking for luxury. Check out my top picks:

First-time travelers should start their journey in Mirissa. This small beach town in southern Sri Lanka has incredible beaches, a fun nightlife, and fantastic surf spots.

If you're a hardcore surfer, I highly recommend Arugam Bay on the East Coast of the island. It boasts one of the best surf spots in the world and has an amazing laid-back vibe.

All shopaholics and party people will absolutely love Colombo, Sri Lanka's capital. It's packed with shopping malls, boutique shops, and great bars and restaurants.

For a fun family vacation, head to Unawatuna. This charming beach town offers a great beach vacation and plenty of family-friendly resorts.

To delve into Sri Lanka's rich history and culture, Kandy is the perfect base to explore some of the country's most famous landmarks.

If you're yearning for a place to relax, surf, enjoy delicious food, and do some yoga, then Hiriketiya Beach is your go-to place.

Last but not least, for outdoor lovers and hikers, Ella is a must-visit. This town is surrounded by breathtaking nature and offers plenty of hiking trails for all skill levels.

1. Where to stay in Sri Lanka for the first time: Mirissa

where to stay in sri lanka - mirissa

When you think of Sri Lanka, you'll immediately imagine white sand beaches, tall palm trees, and great waves for surfing.

And all of that can be found in Mirissa. This little surf town is one of my favorite spots because it has such amazing vibes. On top of that, being a foodie, I think the food options here are absolutely fantastic and some of the best in the country. Mirissa is filled with so many charming cafes, bars, and restaurants that you'll wish you had more time to try them all.

But here's the best part: Mirissa is also the perfect base for exploring the entire coast. You can easily rent a scooter and venture out to other towns like Galle, Unawatuna, Ahangama, and Weligama.

Things to do in Mirissa

Mirissa has plenty of cool activities that will keep you entertained for quite a while.

First things first, you gotta give surfing a go! The waves here are perfect for advanced surfers but don't worry if you're a beginner. There are plenty of surf schools in neighboring Weligama that are more beginner-friendly.

If you're up for a little adventure, make sure to climb up Parrot Rock and Coconut Tree Hill. The views of the coastline are stunning, and you'll have some awesome photo opportunities.

Oh, and let's not forget about the amazing food scene in Mirissa! My personal favorite brunch spot is Shady Lane. They serve the best coffee in town and their eggs benedict is super tasty.

Mirissa is an awesome spot for beginner and intermediate surfers, while Arugam Bay is an absolute paradise for experienced riders. This charming beach town on Sri Lanka's east coast boasts one of the world's best surf spots, Main Point.

Arugam Bay has a laid-back vibe and is less developed compared to other popular beach destinations in Sri Lanka. There are no big hotels or resorts here, but you'll find plenty of cute guesthouses, beach huts, and homestays instead.

The beaches are incredibly beautiful and much bigger than the ones on the South Coast.

Things to do in Arugam Bay

Of course, the main attraction in Arugam Bay is surfing. The waves here are perfect and consistent, making it a surfer's dream spot.

There are also plenty of surf schools for beginners who want to take lessons.

The main attraction in Unawatuna is, of course, the beach. You can spend your days lounging on the soft sandy beach and swimming in the crystal-clear waters. But if you're looking for more activities, there are plenty to choose from.

Kandy, the last royal capital and the second largest city of Sri Lanka is a must-visit for history and culture enthusiasts. This charming city is home to many ancient temples, including the famous Temple of the Tooth Relic – one of Buddhism's most sacred sites.

However, there's more to Kandy than just temples! It also offers stunning nature and outdoor activities like hiking through the lush mountains or visiting nearby tea plantations.

One of my absolute favorite spots in the whole of Sri Lanka has got to be the amazing beach town of Hiriketiya! If the other towns like Mirissa and Unawatuna are too busy or too touristy for you, then Hiriketiya is absolutely perfect.

This small beach town only has a couple of roads where everyone usually just walks around, because it's so small you don't need a scooter or tuk-tuk. The town is packed with hipster cafes, great restaurants, and some of the best boutique hotels in the country.

Hiriketiya is all about relaxing, unwinding, and enjoying the laid-back beach vibes. And what could be better than hitting the waves and catching some rad surf?

The breaks here are perfect for both beginners and advanced surfers, and you can even take a lesson from one of the awesome local instructors or join a surf and yoga retreat. Two spots I absolutely recommend are the Salty Pelican and Kima Surf Camp.

Another awesome activity in Hiriketiya is practicing yoga. There are several incredible yoga schools and retreats in the area where you can join a class or even stay for a few days. If you're looking for a casual drop-in, two top-notch yoga spots are Salt House and Dots Bay House.

And let's talk about the food scene in Hiriketiya – it's absolutely amazing! From fresh seafood to deliciously healthy smoothie bowls, there's something to satisfy every craving.
