But I get it, with it being such a big island, it can be hard to figure out where to stay. So I've put together a guide to help you find the best town and hotels.

If you're looking for that perfect combination of beach relaxation and exploration, read on!

Best areas to stay in Sardinia

Sardinia has a ton of amazing cities and charming coastal towns, but let me share with you a handful of my personal favorites.

If you're a first-timer, you've got to stay in Sardinia's capital, Cagliari. It has the best of both worlds with stunning beaches and a fantastic nightlife scene.

Now, if you're here with your family and kids, I highly recommend Olbia. It's a bit quieter and has some fantastic family-friendly hotels and resorts for you to stay at.

For the ultimate nightlife experience in Sardinia, San Teodoro stands out as the best destination, boasting vibrant clubs, beach parties, and a lively atmosphere.

For couples or honeymooners seeking seclusion and relaxation, Bosa is an absolute must. It's the perfect spot to unwind and enjoy some quality time together.

If you're a beach bum like me, Villasimius is your paradise. It's the ultimate destination for sunbathing, swimming, and all things beach-related.

Oh, and don't forget about the ancient ruins! For the history buffs out there, Sassari is the place to be.

Last but not least, if you're in the mood for pampering, luxury, and some serious shopping, Costa Smeralda is the fanciest area on the island.

1. Where to stay in Sardinia for the first timers looking for a city break: Cagliari

where to stay in sardinia - cagliari

The hub and center of all action here in Sardinia is definitely Cagliari. It's the ultimate mix of amazing beaches, great restaurants and bars, stunning architecture, and plenty of museums and ruins to explore.

Cagliari is located on the south coast of Sardinia, making it likely your first stop when you arrive in Sardinia. With the airport and ferry port right here, staying in Cagliari is super convenient!

And when it comes to hotels, you'll find a bit of everything here. From stunning luxury and boutique hotels in the city to beach resorts and hotels along the coast.

Things to do in Cagliari

Cagliari has the most to offer in terms of activities and sights. One of my favorite things to do here is visit the Roman Amphitheatre. It's estimated to have held around 10,000 spectators for gladiatorial contests and other public events in the past. Today, you can catch a show or concert here during the summer months.

Another must-do is wandering over to the San Benedetto Market. I love visiting markets in other countries and here you can truly get lost in its beautiful colors, delicious smells, and lively atmosphere as you sample local delicacies and pick up some souvenirs.

Art and history lovers will also want to check out the National Archaeological Museum. It houses a vast collection of ancient Roman artifacts, including some incredible mosaics and sculptures.

And for some stunning views of the ocean, head to the Devil's Saddle Viewpoint (Sella del diavolo). It's a bit of a hike up, but trust me, it's worth it for those breathtaking views.

Of course, since we're in Italy and on an island, you've got to spend some time on the beach. And when you're in Cagliari, the absolute best spot to do so, without a question, is Poetto Beach.

San Teodoro has so much to offer, especially when it comes to nightlife. Start your evening with a delicious dinner at one of the amazing Italian restaurants. My absolute favorites are Il Giardinaccio and Da Nardino right in town. They both serve incredibly tasty and fresh seafood that's perfect to start the night.

Afterward, you should make your way to Bamboo, which, in my opinion, is the best bar in San Teodoro. The modern decor is super nice and their cocktails are simply unbeatable. They also have some great finger food like cheese and meat platters and even bao buns.

During the day, you absolutely have to check out the beautiful beaches in and around San Teodoro. La Cinta Beach is the stunning main beach in town, with crystal clear water and white sand. Just keep in mind that it can get pretty busy, especially during peak season.

If you prefer a quieter spot, I recommend Isuledda Beach. It's equally beautiful and usually less crowded since it's a little further out of town.

Where to stay in Sardinia – Frequently Asked Questions

? How do I get to Sardinia?

The best way to reach Sardinia is by flying into one of the island's three main airports: Cagliari, Olbia, or Alghero. Most people usually opt for Cagliari, which is the most popular airport. Alternatively, you can also catch a ferry from the Italian mainland, with convenient departures from places like Rome or Naples or Palermo in Sicily.

? How do I get around in Sardinia?

Honestly, the best way to get around Sardinia is by car. While public transportation options are available, they may not be as frequent or convenient. Renting a car will give you the freedom to explore the island at your own pace and reach more remote areas. However, keep in mind that driving in Sardinia can be challenging due to narrow roads in the cities and winding mountain paths in the inland.

☀️ When is the best time to visit Sardinia?

The peak tourist season in Sardinia is from June to September when the weather is warm and sunny. However, if you prefer a less crowded and more affordable experience, I would recommend visiting in the shoulder season – either in April, May, or October. Keep in mind that even during the shoulder season, Sardinia still attracts many European tourists. For those seeking peace and quiet, the end of October to early November can be a great option, with temperatures still reaching up to 20 degrees!

? Is Sardinia expensive?

Sardinia is not the cheapest destination in Italy, but it is also not the most expensive. Prices will vary depending on where you choose to stay and what activities you want to do. In general, accommodation and food can be found at reasonable prices, especially if you opt for local eateries and small family-run hotels or B&Bs. However, keep in mind that popular tourist areas and luxury resorts can be more expensive.

? How many days should I spend in Sardinia?

I would recommend spending at least a week in Sardinia to fully experience its beauty and culture. If you have limited time, you can still see some of the main highlights in 3-5 days, but keep in mind that you may need to prioritize which areas or activities to visit. If you don't have as much time, try to stick to one area. However, if you have a week or even longer, then I totally recommend doing a little road trip and seeing multiple places.

Where to stay in Sardinia – Final Words

Sardinia is a favorite destination in Italy for a well-rounded European summer vacation! The island is easily accessible, the weather is always good, and on top of that, Sardinia is pretty affordable compared to other destinations in Europe.

The island offers charming towns with amazing dining options, stunning beaches, and lots of history to explore. Especially for families, Sardinia is a great option because the island is so big, making it a breeze to find affordable apartments or cozy family homes away from the hustle and bustle.

I hope my guide has helped you figure out where to stay in Sardinia and will make your next Italy vacation easier.
