1. Where to stay in Hakone for the first time: Hakone-Yumoto & Tonosawa

The Haya River runs alongside these two neighboring areas, which are truly beautiful. One of these areas, known as Hakone-Yumoto, is considered the tourist hub and is often called the “Gateway to Hakone”. Here you can enjoy plenty of different hot spring baths, hotels, and shopping opportunities, and the convenient train connection makes it an excellent base for those exploring Hakone for the first time.

FYI: From Hakone-Yumoto Station, the small, little red trains of the Hakone Tozan Cable Car run straight to the next town: Gora! This route takes about 30 minutes.

The hot spring baths are a big part of Japanese culture, and Gora is often referred to as the “Hot Spring Town”. This place is home to five hot springs, each offering a unique experience as they have distinctive colors, so try to visit more than one.

If you're not interested in a hot spring bath or need a break from soaking in an onsen, consider exploring the town. Check out Hakone Gora Park, the traditional Hakone botanical garden. However, one of my personal favorites in Gora was wandering around the Hakone Open-Air Museum. It holds collections of artworks by Picasso, Henry Moore, Taro Okamoto, Yasuo Mizui, Churyo Sato, Susumu Shingū, and many others. Especially on a warm and sunny day, it's a great place to visit!

Things to see & do in Motohakone

The Hakone Shrine is a popular Shinto shrine in the region that has been around for over 1,200 years. It is known for its association with dragon legends, famous samurai, and travelers on the Tokaido Road, making it one of the most important landmarks in the area. Especially if you haven't seen a traditional Japanese shrine before, I recommend visiting!

If you want to see more of the nearby lake, you can board one of the pirate ships to cruise around the lake. Yes, they are actual pirate ships! Daily tours are available, and you'll enjoy the best views of Mt. Fuji from the water.

Things to see & do in Sengokuhara

For all outdoorsy people and hiking lovers, I suggest that climbing Mount Ashigara (also known as Mount Kintoki) should be on your list! The summit is up at 1200m and, of course, will reward you with stunning views of Hakone and Mt Fuji. I found the hike to be quite challenging but doable, even if you're not an avid hiker.

If you want to enjoy nature in a more relaxed way than hiking up a mountain, you should visit the Hakone Botanical Garden of Wetlands. The garden showcases over 1,000 different plants and is a great family activity.

There is nothing better than sitting on a wooden stool in a small Japanese restaurant, surrounded by locals and enjoying some ramen.

To fully immerse myself in the local culture, I always make sure to try the traditional cuisine. In Kowakudani, my go-to spot is Takinoya, a small restaurant hidden among trees that offers authentic Japanese dishes. Their hot pot is absolutely delicious and, best of all, you can enjoy your meal surrounded by locals – it's a great way to avoid the tourist crowds.

Another great spot for lunch is Hakone Picnic. They offer all different kinds of ramen and snacks, and it's super cheap as well! They even deliver to your hotel if you're not feeling like leaving your bed.

Otherwise, I do like hiring a car from Tokyo, as this will give you ultimate flexibility.
