Hiriketiya Beach is what some might call a hidden gem on Sri Lanka's South Coast. I mean, let's be honest, people have been talking about it for years, especially in the surfer community.

It's definitely a well-known spot. But you know what? This tropical beach paradise still hasn't received the attention it truly deserves, even though it is one of the coolest and most trendy surf towns worldwide.

Hiriketiya Beach is this tiny little town where you can literally walk anywhere without needing a scooter. The best thing is that the surf here is just amazing! Not to mention the great beach, a few incredible cafes and restaurants, and some of the best hotels and co-living spaces in the whole country.

Honestly, when I recently visited, I fell head over heels in love with this place. I didn't want to leave. To ensure that you'll have an even better experience than me (if that's even possible), I've put together the ultimate guide to Hiriketiya Beach. Here you'll get all the insider info you need before you visit.

Where is Hiriketiya Beach

Hiriketiya Beach, or Hiri Beach as the locals call it, is nestled on the south coast of Sri Lanka, specifically in the city of Dikwella. Hiriketiya is one of many amazing coastal towns in southern Sri Lanka and is super easy to get to as well.

While Dikwella itself has a beautiful long sandy beach, Hiriketiya Beach is a hidden town tucked away in a separate small bay on the east side. It's around 27km from Mirissa and 150km from Colombo.

How to get to Hiriketiya Beach

When it comes to getting to Hiriketiya Bay, you've got a few options to choose from:

• Taxi: There are plenty of taxi and shuttle companies all over Sri Lanka, including Uber, that can take you to Hiriketiya Beach. It's about a 3-hour drive from Colombo, but only a 90-minute drive from Mirissa, which costs around US$20.

• Bus: If you prefer buses, they're widely used by most travelers in Sri Lanka. Public bus tickets are very affordable but keep in mind that it may not be the most comfortable way to travel.

• Train: Yes, Sri Lanka has trains too! The train network is pretty good, with trains running from Colombo and Kandy directly to Dikwella, stopping at Wewrukannala Station. Train tickets usually cost just a couple of dollars. I recommend booking at least a second or first-class ticket for some level of comfort since trains usually don't have AC.

Best time to visit Hiriketiya Beach

The high season for visiting Hiriketiya Beach and South Sri Lanka falls between December and March. This is when the weather is absolutely amazing, with clear blue skies and perfect surf conditions, especially for beginners.

Just keep in mind that it can get quite busy during this time, so make sure to book your accommodation in advance and be prepared for slightly higher prices.

If you prefer a lively but less crowded experience, the shoulder season is the way to go. If you don't mind a little rain, you can consider coming in October when you can find great deals on co-living spaces, hotels, and surf schools, especially if you plan on staying a bit longer.

Hiriketiya Beach vs. Mirissa

When it comes to beach towns in Sri Lanka, especially on the south coast, there are plenty of other trendy surf towns to choose from. You have Unawatuna, Weligama, Mirissa, Hiriketiya, Tangalle… the list goes on!

They're all great, but since Mirissa is the most popular one, let's focus on Mirissa and Hiriketiya Beach to give you a better idea of what awaits you.

While Mirissa is a popular tourist destination, Hiriketiya Beach offers a more laid-back and relaxed vibe. It's perfect for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of busier towns.

One thing I noticed is that Mirissa and Weligama have the main street going right through the center of town, whereas Hiriketiya Beach is a bit off the main road, adding to its charm and quieter atmosphere.

In terms of accommodation, both places offer a variety of options to suit every budget from cozy guesthouses to luxurious hotels. However, Hiriketiya Beach has a more boutique feel with stylish and unique accommodations to choose from, while Mirissa has more hostels and resorts.

Now, let's talk about the beaches themselves. Both Mirissa and Hiriketiya offer stunning views and great surf conditions. However, in Hiriketiya, you'll find a smaller, more secluded bay that's perfect for anyone riding a beginner surfboard and wanting a beach break. Keep in mind though, it doesn't offer as much beach space for sunbathing compared to Mirissa.

When it comes to nightlife, Mirissa is known for its great party scene. On the other side, Hiriketiya Beach has its own charm with a few great restaurants and bars that offer live music and a more intimate and laid-back experience. It also has a more local community.

I must say, I love both places, but they offer very different experiences!

Things to do in Hiriketiya Beach

Apart from the obvious surfing, yoga, and beach hangouts, there are some other awesome activities and sightseeing spots around town that you shouldn't miss while you're here.

• Dondra Lighthouse: Only a 30-minute drive from Hiriketiya, you'll find the Dondra Lighthouse. It's situated at the southernmost point of Sri Lanka and offers breathtaking coastal views surrounded by palm trees. It's absolutely worth a visit, especially because it makes for a great Instagram picture.

• Mahi Mahi Swing: Swing by the Mahi Mahi restaurant in Dikwella for a relaxed afternoon or a picture-perfect moment. The beach swing here is a hidden gem, especially during sunset. If you're after a stunning sunset view, Hiriketiya Beach isn't the best spot, so head over to Dikwella Beach for that!

• Hummanaya Blowhole: Just outside of Dikwella, you'll find one of Sri Lanka's biggest blowholes. This popular tourist attraction can shoot water up to an impressive 36 meters in the air.

• Wewurukannala Viharaya Buddhist Temple: Located in Dikwella, this temple is home to a giant seated Buddha statue standing tall at 50 meters, the tallest in the country. It's definitely worth enjoying the impressive architecture and exploring the fascinating hall of hell, showcasing Buddhist hell and its terrifying demons. It's a weird experience, but I highly recommend it!

• Tangalle: If you're up for a day trip, I highly recommend heading to Tangalle, just a quick 30-minute drive from Hiriketiya Beach. You can easily rent a scooter or take a tuk-tuk or take the public bus to get there. Tangalle is known for its stunning beaches, making it the perfect spot for a proper beach day.

Where to stay in Hiriketiya Beach

Hiriketiya Bay is home to a wonderful selection of boutique hotels, hostels, guesthouses, co-living spaces, surf camps, and yoga retreats.

I'll dive deeper into surf camps, co-living spaces, and yoga retreats later on. But for now, let me share with you my personal favorite hotels and hostels.

($$$) Sea View Clay House

Sea View Clay House offers super cozy huts with air conditioning right on the oceanfront. It's truly the best way to relax in seclusion, nestled in the jungle just outside the main beach. If you're looking for a peaceful getaway, this is the place to be! Plus, Sea View Clay House has a fantastic restaurant that serves a superb breakfast.

The Atrium Hiriketiya is a modern and stylish hotel located within walking distance of the beach. The rooms are spacious and beautifully decorated, offering all the necessary amenities for a comfortable stay. The hotel also has an outdoor rooftop pool that offers stunning views of the surrounding jungle, which was the personal highlight of my stay.

($$) Mond Boutique Hotel

Mond is located in the heart of Hiriketiya Beach, just a few steps away from the main beach entrance. The rooms are beautifully designed and offer AC, hot showers, and comfortable beds. What I love most about Mond is its rooftop restaurant that serves the best cocktails and also the best coffee in town, with an amazing view of the bay.

Dots Bay House is a super stylish mix of boutique hotel and hostel, perfect for budget travelers. The rooms are clean and modern, with AC and comfortable beds. They also have a great restaurant and bar that serves delicious food throughout the day. Dots Bay House is located right next to the beach, making it a top choice for surfers.

If you're looking for a budget-friendly hostel, Barefoot Backpackers is the place to stay. It's located just a short walk away from the beach and offers both dormitory beds and private rooms. The staff is super friendly and always ready to share their local knowledge. The hostel also has a bar, making it the perfect place for solo travelers who want to meet other people.

Where to eat & drink in Hiriketiya Beach

Hiriketiya Beach may not have a ton of cafes, bars, and restaurants, but the ones that are here are absolutely fantastic!

Here's a list of my favorite spots to drink and eat in Hiriketiya Bay:

• Duni's Hoppers: This is definitely one of my absolute favorite breakfast or lunch spots! They mainly serve hoppers and smoothie bowls, which are delicious. Hoppers are a traditional Sri Lankan breakfast – pancake bowls with an egg in the middle. Trust me, they're super tasty! And let's not forget about their smoothie bowls, especially the Cacao Bowl – they're the best in town.

• Mond: When it comes to coffee and cocktails, my go-to place is Mond. The rooftop bar/cafe of this boutique hotel has the most amazing views in the area, right by the ocean. They make amazing cocktails and the best flat white in town. So, for all you coffee lovers out there, this is definitely the place to be.

• Bahia: If you're in the mood for a typical Aussie brekkie with a little Sri Lankan twist, Bahia is the place to go. They make fantastic eggs bennie on potato rosti, and their juices and coffees are also on point.

• Dots Bay House: Dots Bay House is a bit of an all-rounder here in Hiriketiya. Not only is the food incredible, but the restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. However, I highly recommend coming for breakfast because their French toast is possibly the best I've ever had – no joke!

• Salt House: Salt House also serves a great breakfast and is the perfect spot to join one of their yoga lessons and then enjoy some juice and a smoothie bowl right after. It's the perfect way to start your morning.

• Malu Poke: For amazing poke bowls, you gotta come to Malu Poke. They have fresh marinated fish every day, and especially their tuna is super tasty. Just a heads up – their portions are huge, so make sure you come hungry. Moreover, the place is right on the beach, making it the perfect spot for a post-surf lunch.

• La Playa: If you're looking for a little bit of a Tulum or Bali vibe, you have to check out La Playa. They have a super cool and stylish pool area right on the beach, and they serve great cocktails and pretty tasty lunches too. It's the ideal spot if you want to hang out by the pool while enjoying an Aperol Spritz or two.

• Bacuzzi: Without a doubt, Bacuzzi has the best pizza in town – you can't change my mind! They're relatively new to Hiriketiya Beach, but their woodfire pizza oven works some magic and creates super tasty pizza. It's located right on the beach, making it a great spot for a bit of a nicer dinner experience.

• Lemon Tree Cafe: I couldn't finish this list without mentioning my favorite local spot, the Lemon Tree Cafe. Without a doubt, it's one of the best places to eat as it serves the best curry in town. The family that owns it is super friendly and proud of their food. When you come, you basically just have to order one type of curry, and they'll still fill the whole table with all kinds of different dishes. And the best part is, it's also super affordable!

Surfing at Hiriketiya Beach

Hiriketiya Beach is not only known for its beautiful bay and amazing food but also for the Hiriketiya Beach surf scene. The waves here are perfect for beginners, as they're gentle and easy to paddle out to.

Surfing in Hiriketiya is not only great for beginners but also suitable for more advanced surfers. When the swell is good, the waves can get quite a bit bigger.

The awesome thing is that this small bay has two breaks. The left one is for the more advanced surfers, while the right one is a super mellow beach break that's absolutely perfect for beginners.

If you're a beginner who wants to learn to surf in Hiriketiya Bay, there are a handful of surf schools in the area that offer surf lessons and board rentals. The instructors are all super friendly and experienced, making it a great place to learn to surf.

When it comes to surf schools in Hiriketiya, there are plenty of options to choose from. You'll find these schools set up in small shacks right on the beach. Personally, I've tried quite a few and I can recommend all of them and the prices are pretty similar, around US$ 20 for a 90-minute surf lesson.

• Hiriketiya Indunil Surf School

• Gamage Surf School

• Dinesh's Surf School

If you're up for a more intense experience, you should check out Kima Surf Camp in Hiriketiya. Trust me, it's one of the best surf camps in the whole of Sri Lanka. Kima isn't just about surfing; it's a yoga and fitness retreat and surf camp all rolled into one.

The property itself is absolutely amazing. It's nestled in the middle of the jungle, just 200m away from the beach. The heart of the camp is a large pool surrounded by cozy cabanas. They offer modern and stylish dorms or private accommodations.

No matter what type of accommodation you choose, your rate always includes free daily yoga classes, access to a fitness room with different types of fitness classes, delicious breakfast and dinner, and of course, two guided surf sessions every single day of the week.

If you're serious about getting into surfing, then Kima Surf Camp is an absolute top recommendation from me.

Hiriketiya Beach for digital nomads

Hiriketiya Beach has been a go-to spot for digital nomads for quite some time now, and it's no surprise why.

You can catch some early morning waves, join a yoga class, and then head to one of the many cozy cafes or co-working spaces to get your work done.

• Verse Collective: This place opened its doors in 2017 and was the first co-working and co-living space in Hiriketiya Beach. It's just a 15-minute walk from Hiriketiya Beach, right at the neighboring Dikwella Beach. They offer a variety of accommodations, from dorm-style rooms to private rooms and even full apartments. Furthermore, all guests have access to the co-working space, which includes some private desks. Even if you're not staying there, you can still enjoy their cafe and restaurant, grab a coffee, and make use of their excellent Wi-Fi. One more thing – they have some fantastic off-season deals on their apartments, so definitely worth checking out if you're looking for a long-term stay on a budget.

• Clics Co-living: Unlike Verse Collective, Clics is a bit cozier. It's located on the opposite side of Hiriketiya Bay, in an old colonial villa surrounded by jungle, just a 5-minute walk from the beach. Clics offers dorms, private rooms, and a shared kitchen. The hostel vibe here makes it super social and fun. They even have an indoor co-working space with air conditioning and a garden, perfect for those sunny hot workdays. Similar to Verse Collective, Clics also offers great deals for long-term stays and even workshops to improve your nomadic lifestyle skills.

Both co-living spaces are fantastic, and I do recommend them. Verse Collective might be a bit pricier, but it's perfect for couples with its cool apartments, which include a kitchen as well.

On the other hand, Clics is a budget-friendly option that's great for solo travelers, with its hostel vibe and social atmosphere.

Yoga in Hiriketiya Beach

Yoga lovers will be thrilled to hear that there are plenty of amazing options here for your yoga journey.

From full-on yoga retreats to drop-in classes, you'll have no shortage of choices. I've tried many of them, and they were all equally fantastic and fun. I think that practicing yoga in the middle of the jungle or right by the beach adds a wonderfully relaxing atmosphere to the experience.

Let me share my favorite spots with you:

• Salt House: Yoga at Salt House is absolutely fantastic. Their yoga space, or Shala, is nestled up in the treetops and has an open-air setting that allows you to connect with nature in a truly special way. The teachers at Salt House are all amazing, in my experience. Classes are usually held at 7 am, which is the perfect way to start the day if you're an early bird. Plus, they are free for everyone staying at the Salt House. If you're just dropping in, it's US$10 per class (you can also buy a 4-class pass for a slight discount). Just keep in mind that during peak season, drop-ins might not be accommodated due to limited space in the Shala.

• Dots Bay House: Dots Bay House is another one of my go-to spots for yoga. They also have an open-air Shala nestled in the treetops of the jungle, offering beautiful views of the trees and the ocean. The yoga area at Dots is quite spacious compared to Salt House, so even during peak season, drop-ins are more than welcome. Classes are usually held every morning at 7.30 am and cost around US$10. You can also purchase 5-pass and 10-pass tickets to save some money.

• Salty Pelican: If you're looking for more than just your occasional drop-in class, Salty Pelican has incredible yoga retreats to offer. Their property was completely newly built in 2019 and is definitely one of the most beautiful retreats I've seen in a while. Being there will truly give you the relaxation you're looking for. They offer different packages ranging from 3 to 10 nights, with the cheapest option starting at around US$360. Some of the packages include amazing spa treatments, surfboard rentals, delicious breakfast, and dinner, and even surf lessons.

Spas in Hiriketiya Beach

Hiriketiya, Sri Lanka, isn't exactly a party town. It's actually the complete opposite. Everything here revolves around relaxation and taking it easy.

If surfing and yoga haven't fully relaxed you yet, a visit to one of the many spas around Hiriketiya Beach definitely will.

Tonic Spa: This place is my go-to for an incredible massage. The spa is super cute and even has a little garden where you can relax while you wait for your appointment. They offer all kinds of treatments, from massages to facials, and they even have herbal baths and ice baths. I haven't yet tried all of their treatments, but I can vouch for their deep tissue massage and herbal bath – both were absolutely amazing and totally worth it.

Korale Massage: Another popular spa in Hiriketiya Beach. These guys specialize in traditional Ayurvedic treatments and use all-natural ingredients for their massage oils, scrubs, and creams. I highly recommend trying their signature treatment, the “Oriyantho” full body oil massage, which also includes a head and face massage. Their location is also incredible – right by the beach, surrounded by palm trees. You'll get to enjoy the ocean view and the soothing sound of the waves while getting your massage.

Hiriketiya Beach Guide – Final Words

If you're after a truly relaxing beach town in Sri Lanka, away from the hustle and bustle of major streets or cities, Hiriketiya Beach on the South Coast is exactly what you're looking for.

It exudes authentic tropical island vibes and offers everything you need – from delicious food to awesome surf and a super laid-back atmosphere. Even if yoga and surfing aren't your thing, this awesome little spot has plenty of other activities to offer that will totally make you want to spend a few days.

Just a heads up though, this magical beach town has a way of pulling you in. You might plan to stay for three nights and suddenly find yourself extending your stay for a whole month!
