I know that it’s a really frustrating feeling when you want to travel, for a holiday or long-term for a few months or even years, but you don’t have the budget for it.

It’s like seeing your friends’ Instagram and Facebook photos and posts travelling the world and all you can do is like it and give a big sigh at the end wishing you could do the same. “How are they able to do that? Where do they get their funds?”, these are maybe just a few of the questions you ask yourself.

Don’t you worry, I’m here to give you some great tips on how to save up for travel. Because I have been asked way too many times!

This is a collection of 5 key money saving tips to get started travelling.

And some additional tips on how to keep on travelling and make money on the road as a digital nomad working entirely online, with only your laptop and a wifi connection.

#1 Change Your Lifestyle

Changing the way you live is definitely a hard thing to do. If you have a lavish lifestyle, I get it, it's hard to plan how to budget and save money.

But truly, the best thing to do is live a simpler life in order for you to save more mullah. I know it is easier said than done, but there are definitely some things that you can cut out of your system easily and you’ll see some great improvement.

And as a result, money is actually staying in your account!

  • Stop eating out – eating at home is often not only healthier as you know exactly what lands on your plate, but it is also better to save up for travel. I really love home-cooked meals! By the way, this includes unnecessary trips to cafes catching up for coffee. Invite your friends to your house instead!
  • Cancel useless memberships – are you a gym member but seldom use that membership card? I suggest that you setup your personal gym at home which can save you a lot of time and expenses likewise. For example, I love to do home workouts and my favourite app for that is Sweat by Kayla Itsines. There are plenty more and you can even do them in the park, by the beach,…
  • Reduce utilities – I’m not saying that you live in the wild and cut every household utility that you have. There are some utilities that really costs you a lot. So how about installing energy-efficient light bulbs, unplugging electronics when not in use or quit using the aircon for once but rather open the windows. Easy, right?

#2 Start Tracking Your Spendings

Knowing what you spend your money on is one of the best money saving tips and most probably quite logical. Still, many people don't track any spendings at all.

There are many ways to track your spendings: you can opt to do it in a more traditional way with a pen and paper, on an Excel sheet, which is actually a good start for anyone or you can do it electronically by tracking your expenses through a mobile app like Mint, a free app to help you manage your spending with ease.

List down everything you spend and see if there’s anything on that list that can be cut off.

If this is the first time that you’ll be doing this you may be surprised to see that saving for a solid travel budget can actually be quite possible.

#3 Sell Things That You Don’t Need

You may hesitate on doing this, especially if you are someone who likes to keep stuff and likes to hold on to it… I get it! Selling things can be so very freeing though!

But if you really want to know how to budget and save money for that trip around the world, I suggest that you let go of those memories attached to your things, if there’s any, and start doing a garage sale, sell stuff online, or sell those unused items at the flea market.

You’ll notice the extra money coming in that will help you with your travel expenses and will also free up some space in your house. Minimalism is cool! Yay!

#4 Start A Dedicated Travel Fund And Set Goals

It’s best to know where you want to travel, how long you will be travelling for, how much you’ll spend on the trip, and more. It’s a great way to start by planning your itinerary and checking out some of my travel guides to give you an idea before taking off to the destination.

Once you know everything you need for your upcoming travels, be strict on your goal! You really want this, right?

#5 Get A Credit Card That Earns You Miles For Spending & Travel Smarter By Booking Deals

If you already have a credit card, you may want to double check if it will earn you miles or special reward points for travelling or booking with a certain hotel chain. Some credit cards have awesome deals and benefits like yearly airline points, Uber credits, free entrance fees to sights like museums.

Check out The Points Guy when shopping around for the best travel credit card to your needs. Imagine you can get some awesome perks when travelling!

And did you know? It is truly possible to travel the world on just $50 per day!

Just think about it this way: If you save up $5,000 you can already travel for 3 entire months. You can read more about some incredible money saving tips in Nomadic Matt’s book “How to Travel the World on $50 a Day”. Step-by-step, this book will guide you to help achieve that goal!

Some countries are more affordable to visit like many in Southeast Asia, and you can see beautiful places and experience rich culture. I recommend you give the following countries some thought: Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, Vietnam and Bali! Don’t hesitate, it’s literally just about you and your goals and how willing you are to make them work.

It's really easy to find a good deal on flights if you shop around a little. The same goes for accommodation! Agoda.com has some incredible deals when travelling around Southeast Asia and Australia. And Booking.com is my favourite platform when travelling the US or Europe.
