Becoming a digital nomad means changing your lifestyle in a way that allows you to work and earn a living from anywhere in the world. The advancement of technology and internet has allowed pretty much anyone to stop being tied to one place in order to make a living.

While it may seem that all you need is a good internet connection and the know-how on how to do a certain type of work, there's more than that to being a digital nomad – especially if you're looking to be a successful one.

If you're looking to make the change and become a digital nomad, here are some questions you should ask yourself before making the final decision.

The one thing that digital nomads do most is change countries where they live and work in. This means you won't be able to rely on knowing what's good in a certain location from your own experience, but rather you'll have to adapt to every new location as you go.

Not everyone is good at this, as the society has taught us to be conformists. This is why to succeed as a digital nomad you'll have to develop a range of skills that will make you more resilient to all kinds of situations.

In order to do this properly, you'll need to start slow and stay longer in one place before moving to the next one – at least in the beginning.

Working on the go from your laptop sounds like a great prospect in theory, but if you're not responsible enough, you won't be able to pull through. When you're self-employed, which digital nomads mostly are, you have to be disciplined enough to work every day – even when you'd rather enjoy a pina colada on a beach.

That being said, it's totally possible to sip that pina colada while working away. If that's your thing, why not!

As a digital nomad, you have to be able to grab your chance instead of waiting for it – which is why discipline is so important. While there's a lot of freedom to it simply by avoiding the 9-5 lifestyle, you have to be able to organize your day and stay productive all throughout.

Some professions are perfect for digital nomads, while some are doomed to fail. Will you be selling a service or a product? Most successful digital nomads are web designers, graphic designers, copywriters, or similar – simply because these professions allow you to sell a service and they usually don't demand your physical presence.

You can also sell products like e-books, or go with the drop shipping business. It's also fairly common to do a combination of these in order to earn more money, but this heavily depends on your skillset and your willingness and ability to learn.

Becoming a digital nomad means cutting ties with almost everything that was holding you back in the first place.

This doesn't mean you won't be seeing your friends or family ever again, and while it will be easy to stay in touch with some, it'll be a challenge to stay in touch with everyone – simply because you won't be around. On the plus side, you'll get to meet a lot of new people and stay in touch with them.

The same goes for a lot of material things you own since you won't be able to bring almost anything with you. A life of a digital nomad means you'll be traveling light, which is why almost everything needs to stay behind – at home or in a storage space.

You will also have to think about pets, if you have any, and find them a new home, or explore possible ways of bringing them with you.

Having a clear idea of where you want to travel as a digital nomad is very important, but it's even more important to be flexible about it.

Don't sacrifice everything just to get to a certain place, take it slow and work your way towards the destinations you want to visit.

Being a digital nomad means you'll be travelling almost every month, maybe sometimes every week. Make some goals of various places you want to see and visit, I especially like to visit  your decisions will be much easier than if you don't have the slightest idea.

The life of a digital nomad is challenging, even though people try to present it as a dream.

It may suit some people perfectly, but the freedom you gain many times outweigh the sacrifices you make in order to become successful. 

It is vital that you have a plan on how you'll be making a living while travelling. Even better if you have some savings to help you get off the ground.

It can also help to move to a cheaper place like Chiang Mai in Thailand, Canggu in Bali or Lisbon to get started. All those places have a thriving digital nomad scene already and you can learn from and connect with the best and most successful nomads here.

If you manage to pull through and live from your work while travelling – you'll probably have a more happy, free and adventurous life overall than your fellow peers who stick to one place.
