Canggu is maturing into a full-blown Bali hotspot. I saw it with my own eyes on my most recent trip to the island of gods.

This Canggu travel guide is continuously been updated to reflect all the new hotels, cafes and changes around Canggu Beaches and Canggu Main Street.

With this travel guide to Canggu (it's  pronounced “changoo”), I am hoping to show you a glimpse of what Canggu is really like and what you can expect to find when travelling to this little slice of paradise.

Please be kind and love this place as much as I do!

If you think Canggu might be slightly too much for you, check out Umalas right next door, this way you'll be super close to access all that Canggu has to offer while not staying within the business of it, and it sure IS BUSY now!

Is Canggu The ‘New Seminyak'?

Canggu hasn't been on the tourist map for too long, but it has rapidly become a popular spot for travellers looking for something different from Legian and Seminyak, which is still closer to the beach than opting for the cool mountains of Ubud.

Bali's hippest hotspot Canggu is especially popular among digital nomads and expats, which is visible by the many modern villas popping up between the lush green rice fields and many new cafés started by people from all over the world.

Some have dubbed Canggu the ‘New Seminyak'.

If it has anything of Seminyak, then yes, it definitely has some of those epic Instagram-worthy spots!

Want the real lowdown on the discussion if Canggu or Seminyak is better, read my article on Canggu vs Seminyak with all the differences as I've lived in both!

What's Canggu Really Like?

Honestly, when I first arrived in Canggu at the start of 2016, I thought it was already a lot more developed, but it wasn't, which was a refreshing change after staying in other parts of Bali like Kuta.

Back then, there were still lots of unpaved roads in Canggu.

Today, unpaved roads are increasingly diminishing and pedestrian footpaths are actually a thing here now! It's pretty safe to walk around Canggu. Just take a bit of extra caution at night and when walking close to the street, always face your bag the other way.

And then there is the washed-out bumpy Canggu Shortcut (Google it, you'll see the images and know what I mean!) that connects Batu Bolong with Batu Bewara, something that's definitely unique.

There are actually not that many beachfront resorts in Canggu, unlike you'll find next door in the more sophisticated Seminyak.

Canggu definitely has a hipster vibe stuck to it with some charming characteristics.

And it's rapidly changing into a full-blown Bali tourist destination that shouldn't be missing on any Bali itinerary. Despite this, I kinda hope Canggu will keep some of its small-town charm!

Why is Canggu so famous and popular now?

If I had to sum it up: Canggu has it all!

The cool cafés of Seminyak, the abundance of healthy food of Ubud, the green rice fields of Bali's inland and long stretches of beach as long as the eye can see.

Here's a video of my personal Canggu impressions:

How Do You Get From Canggu To Seminyak?

From Canggu, you can literally walk all the way to Seminyak. Along the beach, it takes around 40 minutes, depending on how quick of a walker you are.

And if you get stuck at one of the little cocktail huts along the way. Don't say I didn't warn you!

Getting from Batu Bolong to Seminyak

Driving from Canggu main street Batu Bolong into the heart of Seminyak takes around 20-25 minutes by car or scooter. You can book a taxi at your hotel or hire a scooter if you feel confident to drive one. Gojek or Grab is always a quick and easy option otherwise.

Getting from Berawa Beach to Seminyak/Legian/Kuta

If you leave from Berawa Beach, where you'll also find the popular Finn's Beach Club, to drive to Seminyak, then it's roughly a 15-20 minute drive.

From Canggu to Legian, it's about a 25-30 minute journey by car.

You can reach Kuta from Canggu in 30-40 minutes, all depending on traffic.

From the Ngurah Rai International Airport to Canggu, it's 45-60 minutes, all depending on the time of day and traffic. I highly recommend pre-booking your airport transfer before arrival, as it will save time, give you peace of mind, safety and the price is fixed, so you can skip the stress and eliminate the uncertainties of finding transportation upon landing in Bali!

The Best Time To Visit Canggu, Bali

There is really no real best time to come to the island of Bali. You can definitely visit anytime, as the weather is tropical with high temperatures all year round.

However, a few things might affect your decision:

High Season & Dry Season in Bali

The high season for tourists is generally during July and August, and many Australians hop over as it's winter time then.

However, before and after, those months are even better, like May, June, and September.

Then it is the dry season, which means it's less humid and prices for accommodation are still a little cheaper than in the high season.

Wet Season in Bali

From October to April, you will encounter the rainy season, so take into account that there will be short downpours and you will get some wet feet.

However, even in the rainy season, you will have hot sunny days! The beaches can be dirtier than in the dry season as rubbish, unfortunately, gets washed down from the inland rivers and back ashore and chunks of wood and plastic is especially a problem.

If you want to help clean up the beaches around Canggu, there are regularly weekly organised clean-up walks. I encourage you to take part if you can! Pretty cool to meet some new people around here too.

Biggest Events in Bali to Be Aware of When Planning Your Bali Trip

Another thing to keep in mind is Bali's events and festivals, like the ‘Day of Silence', for example, also known as Nyepi, when the whole island goes silent (and dark!) for 24 hours to celebrate the start of the Saka New Year.

It's a day of reflection, fasting and meditation for Balinese Hindus but affects foreigners and visitors alike as everything is shut down and no one is allowed on the streets or beaches, and even the airport is closed.

Orientation: Canggu Main Street & Areas

Canggu lies about 20 driving minutes north of Seminyak. Driving from Canggu to Seminyak is easy and you can either take a taxi or ride a scooter.

Be aware the main road has quite a bit of traffic depending on the time of the day.

Canggu is a small coastal village hugging the ocean and consists pretty much of three parallel-running villages with their own beach areas: Berawa Beach, Batu Bolong Beach and Echo Beach, bordered by a bigger and very busy road called Jalan Raya Canggu to the north, about 5km inland.

From here, there are three main streets running parallel towards the ocean, which make up Canggu:

  • Jalan Pantai Batu Bolong (the main street of Canggu aka Canggu City Center)
  • Jalan Pantai Berawa and,
  • Jalan Padang Linjong

And then there is also Pererenan, one of my favourite parts since I lived there at the end of 2017 for a while.

Pererenan is a little away from the hustle and bustle of Canggu but within easy access to everything. It's definitely more local and a great area to stay in if you are in Canggu for a while and like it less touristy.

If you hear about an area called Kerobokan, it's a part just East of Canggu and a little inland with easy access to Seminyak and some new restaurant and villa developments popping up. Another great area if you like things a little quieter.

How To Get Around Canggu

Since the three main streets of Canggu go parallel right down to the beach and lack connecting roads in-between, it's always a little detour inland over the famous rocky ‘shortcut' or some other small streets.

The most direct way between all areas is always a walk along the beach. Which means throwing off your shoes and simply walking. Not always an option but!

Hiring A Scooter In Canggu

Otherwise, I do recommend hiring a scooter. I paid 500.000 Rupiah (just over USD30) for a monthly rental and had quite a new one, but it varies and around 600.000-800.000 Rupiah is normal for a monthly rental fee.

Hiring a scooter in Canggu will likely get you places twice as fast as travelling by car.

Alternatively, hire a private car with a driver to get around. Many hotels have their own driver or people they call when you ask them about it.

The streets around Canggu are generally not as busy as Seminyak or Kuta, but every time I come back, they are definitely getting more crowded.

Especially the shortcut can be a challenge on a scooter if you haven't had much driving practice before.

Likewise, when it's raining, the streets get swamped easily. Be careful!

And ALWAYS get travel insurance because you never know what can happen. Bali scooter accidents are very common and it may not even be your fault, but someone else driving stupidly. I use HeyMondo travel insurance, which gives me peace of mind and doesn't set me back financially in case something does happen!

Alternatives To Getting Around Canggu

Alternatively, if you don't want to drive yourself, download the Go-Jek App where you can ‘Go-Ride', so grab a driver (scooters only) or Grab Taxi is another good app to find a taxi.

Uber exists too but is limited and many areas in Bali, including Canggu are trying to restrict all those services and you will see big signs stating that they are prohibited.

I guess an act to save the local taxi business. It's best to find a trust-worthy driver you can ring up again and again as it can become a challenge with any ride-share app.

Taking A Taxi In Canggu

There are a few local taxi stands scattered around but it's sometimes challenging to pick one up in the street as there are simply not driving around in abundance, especially if you are staying in a small side street.

Try to get one of the light blue Bluebird Taxis, as they generally have a reputation for being honest and go by meter. All other taxis can be more tricky in Bali's corrupt taxi industry.

A ride from Canggu to the airport in Kuta in a Bluebird Taxi should cost you around 120.000 Rupiah, sometimes more depending on the time of day and traffic situation.

Where To Go Shopping In Canggu

If you've purposely packed for your Bali adventure with additional space for shopping, I've got all the areas for you to start browsing.

The biggest crowd of restaurants, bars, and cafés, as well as Canggu's main shopping street sits along Jl. Pantai Batu Bolong, a street that ends at the popular Old Man's Bar and sunset viewing spot over Batu Bolong Beach. Love Anchor Market along this very street is a good starting point for any shopping.

Then you've got Jalan Padan Linjong, the main street leading onto Echo Beach, which has seen many new developments over recent years and has plenty of restaurants and some shops. On the bottom towards the ocean, it goes into Jalan Batu Mejan, a more concentrated area with shops, accommodation options and restaurants. Here you'll also find La Brisa Beach Club right by the beach.

Finally, the road Jl. Pantai Berawa splits off into two: Jl. Canggu Permai II, where you will find the local market, which you can recognise by a huge red wall, it's right behind there, and Jl. Pantai Berawa with some more cafés and restaurants as well as housing Finns Recreation Club (formerly Canggu Club), an entertainment and sporting venue including a water park and fitness center.

Additionally, if you are staying close to Berawa Beach, there are also plenty of shops along Jl. Pantai Berawa. My favourite store here is Bungalow Living Bali, which has been here for years and is a good starting point for shopping around Berawa.

Supermarkets In Canggu

Right next door on the other side of the road, you can find my favourite supermarket in the area, Canggu Station, perfect for your basic local and international grocery shopping. There is a little bakery section in there too, which does some dark bread as well as pretzels (for my German cravings) and cakes.

Following along with the main traffic, after two turns, you will find yourself on Jalan Subak Sari, the road leading on to Seminyak and there is a bigger supermarket called Frestive also, which opened in 2016. Google Maps didn't list it for some time but now you can find it. Either way, you will definitely spot it with its extensive car park and big colourful sign as you drive towards Seminyak.

There is also a Pepito Supermarket along Batu Bolong heading inland, which is really convenient too.

These are the big supermarkets in Canggu, otherwise, there are plenty of small mini-marts in between for quick and convenient things.

Where To Stay In Canggu

My favourite areas to stay in Canggu are around Berawa Beach or Pererenan, both very different areas and actually on the opposite sides of Canggu. If you decide to stay in either of them, I highly recommend renting a scooter to get around.

When I first lived in Canggu for a few months, I found a room in a private villa in Berawa, not far from what is now Finns Beach Club to share with other digital nomads, which was very cool.

The Best Area To Stay In Canggu For First Timer's

If it's your very first time in Canggu and you want to stay in the main part of town, opt for a hotel or guest house along Batu Bolong, Canggu's main street.

From here you can walk to all the best cafes, restaurants, shops and also the beach rather easily. Batu Bolong is the main street of Canggu, which makes it busy and increasingly touristy, but it's the best area to stay for your first time in Canggu. Batu Bolong is also the best area to stay in Canggu without a scooter.

If you'd like to be close toFinn's Beach Club and a short ride away from Seminyak, opt for accommodation in Berawa Beach.

Lastly, Echo Beach area is for you, if you prefer things a little more quiet.

Every time I've been back to Canggu, I lived in different villas, hotels and cozy guesthouses all over different parts of Canggu, so below are my recommendations on where to stay in Canggu.

I have also written another, much more extensive article on where to stay in Canggu as it's one of the number one questions I get ALL the time. You can find the whole article here. You're welcome!

How To Rent A Private Villa In Canggu

To find a villa locally, I'd recommend looking through the Canggu Community Facebook group as well as Canggu Housing Community.

There are heaps of offers, just check them out locally before you make a decision to move in and of course, you are free to negotiate the price face-to-face with the landlord too.

I think you can find a decent shared villa with your own room for around IDR 4.5 to 5.5 mil a month, more expensive and fancy is always possible, as well as cheaper and more basic, but I guess that's a good indication for finding a nice place. If you don't want to share a villa, be prepared to pay a higher price, depending on the bedrooms you required.

Finding An Airbnb In Canggu

Airbnb is always a great option, no matter where in the world you are.

There are quite a few good Airbnb options in Canggu and you can always book a few nights as a starting point if you are planning to stay around longer and want to find all your options on the ground.

Where To Eat, Drink Good Coffee & Find Wi-Fi In Canggu

The options are plenty of amazing options to eat, have fantastic coffee and hook up to the Wi-Fi in all areas of Canggu.

Below are my most favourite Canggu Café picks.

Best Cafes in Batu Bolong

Crate Café: From its humble beginnings, Crate Café has a huge cafe space just off Batu Bolong Road. Green smoothies and breakfast all day, oh and well, lunch too! No printed menu, just whatever is on the big whiteboard behind the counter. Nice seating for some people watching and strong coffee. They also have a small concept store right here showcasing some of Bali’s best designer labels.

The Shady ShackThis nautical beach shack is one of my regulars and a real addiction. I simply love their style, interior and of course, the food is amazing. Smoothie bowls, eggs and raw organic masterpiece cakes. Yum!

Monsieur SpoonI love a good bakery and Monsieur Spoon is your go-to if you need a fix of French-style baked goods. From homemade croissants to pastries and macarons, this place is heaven! Extensive breakfast menu and wifi throughout. They have a few branches all over Bali now and even organise baking classes for kids.

Roti Canai: Along Batu Bolong, you'll find Roti Canai, my go-to place for all things Roti. From savoury to nutella, you'll find a lot of flavours to try. They have some Indonesian food, Sate, Salads too. I also love the homemade pies, they are worth a try! Good prices to be found here.

Poke Poke: Hawaii in Canggu? Yep, you can get that here too! The ahi poke bowl is a classic Hawaiian appetizer made from marinated diced yellowfin tuna loins with onion, ginger, scallion, soy sauce, and sesame oil. Of course, there are various flavours, super delicious! Inside it's actually connected with Roti Canai. Oh and check out that awesome swing inside the restaurant!

Casa TuaMy favourite place to take visitors to eat wonderful Indonesian food. The place is nice and airy with a garden and very friendly staff. Most times they have rabbits scampering around in the garden. Try the Nasi Goreng, Kare or ask for the recommendation of the staff, they will be delighted to suggest something to your taste!

Motion CaféCute little place with a great, healthy vegan and paleo menu. They have a lot of high-protein menu items and also offer customised meal plans.

Best Cafes in Berawa

Milk & Madu CafeA local outdoor café especially popular for breakfast and brunch, now they have two locations in Canggu – their original location in Berawa and the new location on Batu Bolong road! They are also open for lunch and dinner. Make sure to try the lava stone-baked pizza. They serve Nalu Bowls there as well as their own super breakfast bowls, and great coffee by Revolver, which is another good coffee shop to visit if you happen to be in Seminyak. Internet works very well here. There is also a Milk & Madu Cafe in Ubud now!

Cinta Cafe: One of my all-time favs. Sitting amidst the rice fields, it hardly gets better than this in terms of views in Canggu. The food is pretty nice too, try the Salmon Pasta, grilled tuna steak or hummus and falafel plate. Good Wi-Fi speed to be found here.

Bungalow LivingEating in a beautiful interior and homewares store, that's pretty accurately how Bungalow Living can be described. From bed covers, pillows to adorable cards and bags, you'll definitely find something you want while munching on a Falafel Panini or Salmon Bagel.

Nude Cafe: Their mantra healthy body, healthy mind is mirrored in the menu with a variety of gluten-free, vegan and vegetarian dishes. The air-con room is a plus on a hot day in Bali.

Satu Satu CaféA recent discovery of mine while looking for good Wi-Fi around Berawa. Perfect for working on your laptop for a bit, great coffee and bakery stuff. I love the Smash Avocado and Chicken Panini. It's a smaller space and I sometimes had to share a table, but the staff is super friendly. You'll see many others with laptops sitting in there.

Ruko CaféA popular pit-stop for breakfast and perfect to get your creativity flowing in the morning. The interior is stylish and the Acai and Bircher Bowl is unbeatable.

Pels SupershopI am not vegan and despite, this cozy café blew my mind. I loved the delicious vegan dishes made from local, fresh ingredients, from breakfast to coffee breaks and lunch, you'll surely find something here!

Copenhagen BaliI stumbled upon Copenhagen by accident, but I am so glad I did! I just had to come back for their Nordic-inspired breakfast that is served all day. Yep, they also do lunch and dinner. Their menu is like tapas style, which is super nice as you get to try a lot of different things are not just stuck with one menu item. Coffee with coconut milk and homemade cinnamon roll and my morning is perfect!

Cafe Vida Organic: Nestled in the heart of Echo Beach, Cafe Vida Organic nurtures based on healing food, gluten-free and organic elixirs, augmenting a true biohackers dream.

I Am Vegan Babe: A laid-back eatery with a Western-inspired array of plant-based cuisine and beverages, everything I ate here was super fresh and tasty!

  • Rise & Shine Cafe
  • La Baracca

I could keep going with this list of awesomeness cafés and food to try, but the general rule of thumb here in Canggu is: Go anywhere and everywhere and try anything and everything, there is no single place that is bad!

Best Things To Do In Canggu

So you are wondering what is there to do in Canggu? The answer is: A LOT!

Catch Waves from Sunrise to Sunset

While the Canggu beaches have dark beige to black volcanic sand and are not amazing for dreamy crystal-clear swimming.

Those are more in the south of Bali around Uluwatu. However, they do provide some renowned surf spots with sandy and reef breaks offering different conditions to many levels.

If you are wondering where you should start off surfing in Canggu, I like Old Man's – Batu Bolong spot and often head out there.

It's surfable all year round and you'll see people in the water at any time of the day from sunrise to sunset.

When I went back in 2017 and again in 2018, this spot has become very popular, which means quite a few more people out there compared to 2016.

Be on the watch if you are a beginner, as you'll want enough space for yourself to stuff it up on the waves without hitting anyone or anyone dropping in on you.

Usually, with no or light wind and between mid to high and also high to mid tide on the run out are great surf conditions in Canggu.

Where To Rent A Surfboard In Canggu

There are a couple of surf hats right in front of the Old Man's Bar on the beach where you can rent boards of all sizes for around 50.000 Rupiah for two hours or bring your own, there is plenty of parking. Note that this is mostly paid parking with a security guard.

You can also ask for a surf lesson here, there is always someone around who will take you out for 2 hours.

As Canggu is getting increasingly busy, I would highly recommend you book your surf lesson ahead of time to not miss the best time of the day to go out, especially if you are short on time!

Be aware that the short break right at the shore is dangerous though. I've seen so many people get smashed (yep, including me a few times), so just be quick here getting in and out. Otherwise, it's a pretty safe spot to surf in Canggu.

Are There Any Dedicated Surf Camps Or Surf Schools In Canggu?

Of course, heaps! You'll find many local surf schools around Canggu by simply googling or asking locals when you arrive.

If you want to go with someone renowned, I'd also recommend the Aussie surf tour company Mojosurf. They have a surf camp in Canggu too with double, twin and dormitory-style accommodations and also offer multiple day surf-safaris around the whole island.

There are also many yoga & surf retreats, which you can find in this article.

Furthermore, be sure to check out Wave House, a boutique surf, yoga and lifestyle retreat, if you are staying around for a few days. Absolutely beautiful place with a great vibe, especially if you are a solo traveller.

Other surf camps in Canggu worth checking out:

  • Lapoint, includes accommodation and surfing lessons
  • Kima Surf, right in the centre of Batu Bolong and close to Old Man's
Wave House Surf Camp Canggu Bali

Where To Go Swimming In Canggu

When swimming at Batu Bolong, Canggu's main beach, be cautious with the short break and currents. It's an open ocean after all. Lifeguards are rare in Bali, but if you take care of the short break and listen to the locals, you'll be fine.

Make sure you watch for the red flags too, as the beaches on this stretch of the coast have dangerous rip tides and undertows which can become very strong and pull you out into the ocean. Stay aware, but don't be scared.

Practice Yoga In Canggu

Canggu is a little less spiritual than Ubud but you can still get your yoga fix or start out at becoming a yogini.

I enjoyed my yoga class at the Serenity Eco Guesthouse as there are plenty of different styles and classes you can join and they are the cheapest in Canggu at 110.000 Rupiah for a class.

They also have discounted package passes available too. Oh, and they even offer aerial yoga.

Other yoga studios in Canggu to check out:

  • Samadi Bali, they have an organic café next door and a local Organic Farmers and Artisans Market every Sunday out front

Make Your Own Pretty Jewellery Workshop

I really wanted to get creative and make some pretty jewellery and not only sit on my laptop while in Bali, so I decided to go for a silversmithing class at Canggu Jewelry Classes. I made a necklace and a ring in 3 hours and had a great time as the staff was really lovely.

Even though have some wonderful inspirational jewellery throughout the shop where you sit and do the workshop too, however, I recommend you come with an idea of what you want to make. Totally stalk Pinterest in advance for some ideas!

If making jewellery is not your thing, you could also join a Balinese cooking class in Canggu. Most cooking classes take place in Ubud, which is only an hours drive and this tour will also pick you up in Canggu.

Browse the Markets In Canggu

In case you don't feel creative enough to make your own jewellery, I highly recommend checking out one of the artsy markets around Canggu:

  • Love Anchor Market
  • Samadi Market
  • And my favourite one is the monthly occurring market at Old Man's which is always on the last Saturday of each month from 8 am to 3 pm.

Book A Spa Treatment

No visit to Bali would be complete without getting pampered and booking a spa treatment. And since it's so affordable why not get your nails done too? I love the massage at Goldust Beauty Lounge in Canggu, wonderful atmosphere and professional staff.

If they are booked out, try:

  • Spa Spring Canggu
  • Therapy Canggu
  • Maria Curau Bali
  • Tonic Day Spa
  • Jet Black Ginger

I can also recommend Think Pink, a New York-style nail parlour, it's just so glamorous and so nice. You can find this salon on the way into Seminyak coming from Canggu.

While they do all things nails perfectly, they also know massages, facials, waxing and more.

Visit Tanah Lot Temple Or Take A Day Trip From Canggu

Tanah Lot Temple is a popular landmark for tourists visiting Bali, so you definitely won't escape the crowds here. Often referred to as the temple in the water, this ancient Hindu shrine is perched on top of a rocky outcrop in the middle of constantly crashing waves.

It's a 30-40 minute scooter ride away from Canggu and most popular at sunset, with many tour buses arriving for their last stop of the day.

Even though you cannot access the temple grounds, the views are amazing and it's worth discovering the smaller shrines dotted around and you get a nice look at the entire coast. Sometimes there are traditional dance performances too and of course, there is a tourist village with all sorts of souvenir stalls which I don't fancy too much.

There are plenty of other great full-day trips to take from Canggu too. The easiest is to book a private driver to visit Bali's mountainous inland around Ubud.

Or how about a Bali Instagram Tour to the most famous spots?

I also loved the Mount Batur Sunrise Trek. Make sure you book the tour with a visit to the hot springs afterward, it's simply so good and absolutely soothing after an early morning hike up the mountain.

Find A Spot To Watch The Sunset

Watching a beautiful sunset in Canggu is absolutely essential. And there sure are plenty of spots to do so.

The biggest crowd of sunset watchers can be found around Old Man's and Batu Bolong Beach, where you can grab a fresh coconut, beer or corn on the cob from one of the small street stands at the bottom of the car park.

Don't worry, you won't miss where all the action is happening, just go past this flashy blue wall and you'll see!

Berawa Beach and Echo Beach both have plenty of beach huts too and are definitely a good spot to watch the surfers catch the last waves of the day.

Try the Naked Coconut, which is a bit hidden, but you can find it best when walking along Berawa Beach to the right towards Finns Beach Club. The sign is small, so are the bean bags in the sand and the hut behind it, but I am sure you'll figure it out. It's called a hidden gem for a reason!

The best place to catch the sunset at Echo Beach is from the legendary La Brisa Beach Club.

Below are a few more sunset spots that also account for good places to party when the sun has set.

Best Places To Watch The Sunset & Party In Canggu

So where is the party at in Canggu? Anywhere?

While it doesn't get as wild and crazy as any party in Kuta or at the nightclubs next door in Seminyak, you can find some sweet party spots for a relaxed sundowner by the beach or, if you fancy, listen to some live music or DJs playing spinning the tunes.

Nightlife has definitely arrived in Canggu!

Old Man's Canggu

Old Man's is Canggu's beachfront beer garden, well or at least a cool spot to hang out and watch the surfers as it is set right above one of the main surf breaks in Canggu. The food menu is simple and you pay a little extra for the location.

I prefer eating somewhere else and coming here for drinks and the crowd of people which is generally chilled out and friendly and you will have an easy time meeting people. Expect live music on weekends and a different theme or event almost every other night, so pretty perfect for sunset or to kick off a night out.

Deus Ex Machina

Deus is a cultural temple concept melding workshops, artist studios and restaurants into the store. It's surfy, there are motorbikes, it's hip.

The biggest and best nights at Deus are on Sundays, when various live bands gets everyone in the courtyard to dance.

Until midnight, then you either continue with DJ music or head over to Sand Bar, which is now located in front of Old Man's. Kick off from midnight, that's where are the after parties happen.

Pretty Poison & Black Cat Mini Mart

A little different hangout, as you sip on your drinks right in the middle of a skate park. Pretty Poison has been around for a long time and is your go-to spot after sunset drinks on the beach.

Even more so if you're a skater, surfer or generally consider yourself a little hipster. Ha, there I said it! Watch the weekly skate jams and listen to live music as this place packs up until close to midnight.

There's a new joint right next door called Black Cat Mini Mart, dubbed as a dirty speakeasy, this bar will have you dancing and playing pool table to the tunes.

The Lawn Canggu

The Lawn used to be a little patch of grass with bean bags, cold beer and coconuts sold from a polished VW Kombi a few years back. Today, the Lawn has upgraded its facilities and it looks a lot different, the good vibes still exist though! Compare the left and right photo below!

The Lawn Canggu Past
Nightlife In Canggu

They have a pool area with a swim-up bar as well as a beach deck where you can crash on one of the day beds in the sun. Or come to The Lawn for a romantic star-lit dinner on the Top Deck. The Lawn is a day and nighttime venue and they also serve great food. There is always a variety of events happening too. Check their website or Facebook on what's happening.

Some other cool bars & clubs in Canggu that are worth checking out are:

  • La Brisa, such a cool boho vibe here and absolutely breathtaking decor on the beachfront of Echo Beach
  • Gimme Shelter, a real rock'n'rool bar
  • JI Restaurant, located within Tugu Hotel, right behind The Lawn, with 180-degree views of Canggu's beach and a killer cocktail menu

Finn's Beach Club

As for another beachfront experience, Finn's Beach Club is a huge beach club on Berawa Beach. You definitely won't miss this massive bamboo structure while walking along the beach.

There are 6 bars, 2 swimming pools, a restaurant, spa, plenty of hammocks to chill in and you can even surf out the front at night. The rental fee for a day bed starts at Rp 500,000. They have different parties on different nights of the week, including International DJs and Happy Hour.

Living In Canggu As A Digital Nomad

Below is a snippet from my very first time in Canggu, living the digital nomad life.

I am sitting on the second floor of my Bali villa in the sleepy seaside village of Canggu, listening to summer tunes (necessary at 32 degrees!) while writing this post about my adapted paradise home.

Looking out, I can see the tropical palm trees swinging to the rhythm of the ocean breeze next to red brick-coloured rooftops scattered left and right.

Through the Spotify playlist, I can hear the waves breaking in the distance on the shore of Berawa Beach.

The beach is just a few hundred meters and, therefore only a couple of footsteps away from here. So lucky!

Looking back, booking a flight to Bali and living in Canggu was one of the best decisions ever.

I hope coming to this part of Bali will be as memorable for you too!
